-We are 7 players (6 have never played Stud before)

-Game should last about 4-5 hours

What structure would you suggest?

Could you just play a low stakes cash game? Seems like this might be a better option for those that have never played before.

A tournament doesn't have to be a knock-out tournament. A tournament can also be played like a cash game, and pay out prize money to the two largest stacks at the end.

No must be a tournament.

I would also like to know the reason for this as well.

That said
A little more info would help as well like what chip denoms (cash/tourney set) are you using and what starting stack sizes are you wanting?

I say buy in for X amount of money....say $50 or $60, and then run antes and move your antes up every 30-45 minutes and then as pltrgyst said pay out the top two at the end of the tourney. I suppose you could blinds as well and raise them with the antes

because we always play a knockout tournament. At the end of the year it all tournaments count to a leaderboard and every single place matters.

Sooo you have tourney denoms......? Do you have a starting stack size you would like to use? Are using this as more of a teaching tool so people learn stud? Give us a little more info and we can help you better with suggestions. Do you want to use blinds? Most of us that play stud play cash games, but we can probably get a pretty effective tourney structure with some more info...;)

We will be 6-8 players, we want to test if the stud tourney would fit in our annual competition. I thought playing with antes, forced bet, little bet and big bet.

It doesn't make since to me why you would play a new game that only one player knows how to play if you are in some kind of league( leader board ).... Play your normal game as a tourny and play stud afterwards for very cheap( fun) to teach new players. Then hold a tourny when everyone is on the same page.

Oh and you've been asked several times about your breakdown with no answer. Can't help you with a structure if you don't give us all the info:p

Just off the top of my head:
Ante/Bring-in/limits
50/75/200-400
75/100/300-600
100/150/400-800
125/175/500-1000
150/225/600-1200
200/300/800-1600
250/375/1000-2000
300/400/1200-2400
400/600/1600-3200
500/700/2000-4000
600/900/2400-4800
700/1000/3000-6000
1000/1500/4000-8000
1200/1800/5000-10,000
1500/2000/6000-12,000
2000/3000/8000-16,000
2500/3500/10,000-20,000
3000/4500/12,000-24,000
4000/6000/16,000-32,000
5000/7500/20,000-40,000
6000/8000/25,000-50,000

Adjust starting stack and level durations in accordance with how long you want the tournament to last.

We have been using this structure for fixed-limit Razz, Stud, and Stud Hi-Lo for years:

Fixed-Limit 7-card Stud

T12000 (80 big bets)
20-minute blind levels

L1 75/150, 25 ante, 25 bring-in, 75 complete
L2 100/200, 25 ante, 25 bring-in, 100 complete
L3 150/300, 50 ante, 50 bring-in, 150 complete
break
L4 200/400, 50 ante, 50 bring-in, 200 complete
L5 300/600, 50 ante, 100 bring-in, 300 complete
L6 400/800, 50 ante, 100 bring-in, 400 complete
break - remove T25 chips
L7 500/1000, 100 ante, 200 bring-in, 500 complete
L8 600/1200, 100 ante, 200 bring-in, 600 complete
L9 800/1600, 100 ante, 200 bring-in, 800 complete
L10 1000/2000, 100 ante, 200 bring-in, 1000 complete
break - remove T00 chips
L11 1500/3000, 500 ante, 500 bring-in, 1500 complete

L13 3000/6000, 500 ante, 500 bring-in, 3000 complete
L14 4000/8000, 500 ante, 500 bring-in, 4000 complete

Event should last approximately 4 hours for 8 players. Use T1000 chips for color-ups of T25 and T100 chips. About 120 total chips in play when heads-up.

T12K Starting Stacks:
12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
8 x T1000
----
37 chips = T12000

I love Stud tourneys! I try to keep it close to my Flop game structures as possible, the big difference is because of the increased amount of bets I make the levels much longer than Hold 'Em/Omaha. I've never heard of Stud being done No Limit but the number of betting rounds does mean things can get out of control pretty quick.

My normal Flop game tourneys are done with 20 minute levels, I do 40 or even a whole hour for Stud or Stud Hi/Lo 7. 5K in chips + rebuy, thanks to the folks here how convinced me to change from my 2K format. This certainly doesn't put a lot of bets in hand but I like forcing Stud games to be more cautious/thinking but that's just me. Certainly cuts down on the worry of running out of cards. I like my tourneys to be over in about 4 hours, because kids/work.

How about something like:

Ante/Bring In/3-4 Streets/5-7 Streets

25/25/50/100
25/50/100/150
50/75/125/200
50/100/150/250
75/125/175/300
75/150/200/350
etc.

You can certainly go to straight doubling at each point to force the issue.

Last Saturday we played our first Stud tournament in our club. It was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed the game and my chilli con carne. :)
Somehow the tournament took longer than we were thinking but that was okay. After the tournament we went out for eating Pizza.

So great day for everyone!

It's great it worked out... Did you use BGs structure?
