In a 2/5 session today at a casino, a situation came up several times which bothered me.

Two players were seated next to each other who plainly knew each other well from both the casino, and outside private games. They were chatting and bullshitting nonstop.

The hands would go like this:

Someone opens to $15 or $20.

There’s a call.

Buddy-A raises to $75 or $80.

Buddy-B calls.

The $15-$20 opener and caller both fold.

Then, still preflop, the buddies agree to “check it down.”

Now in the game I host, I would have warned the players to knock it off. It stinks of collusion, and is bad for the game.

Since I was not involved in any of these hands, and the people who folded did not complain, I decided not to say anything.

But if it had happened when I was in a hand, I would’ve said something when it happened more than once, like “Hey, that’s not kosher.”

And I was kind of steamed that the dealer didn’t say anything, which might have then led to asking for a ruling.

Thoughts?

Thats pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Especially if they verbally agreed out loud each time. Pretty surprised the dealer a) didnt pick up on this, or b) didnt care.

The two were plainly regs at that poker room. I have found that many dealers rarely enforce rules like this against regular customers.

In the same room, I’ve seen another reg comment loudly on multiway hands still in progress in which he is not even involved, and the dealer saying nothing to stop it. (I said something in that case once he did it in a hand I was in.)

It is always awkward to be the one speaking up. Almost always, the person trying to get the rules enforced seems to become the bad guy.

I had one incident at MGM many years ago, when FL was a thing. It was around 2 am and a couple comes in. It was 2 or 3 tables running so they come in and sit at seat 1 and 5 which were the two open seats, I was in seat 3. They were raising left and right and other players were forced out. They usually ended up heads and then one of them would muck at showdown (last aggressor shows). If a 3rd player got involved one player would fold on the river and the other would usually have a legit hand.

Anyways, I figured out their messaging system. When a player with a good hand wanted the other player to bet, I think he or she would like at their cards or something. It was really easy to confirm and it was 100%. So I snuck off and talked to floor and told them their system. He said he would look at it.

Meanwhile I just waited for a good flop hit and let them build the pot for me. It was easy to tell when one of them hit something (usually flush or straight) due to this "tell". If they got wild on the flop it was either a combo draw or set. Or top two on a dry board. One time I flopped top set (didn't have to raise pre, they did that) on a dry board and won a huge pot against both of them (seat 1 raise, I call, seat 5 raise, seat 1 re-raise, I cold-call, seat 5 raise, etc.) I think the other one I flopped the straight, the went nuts and the board didn't pair.

After about an hour or so they changed table. I was way up so I didn't care. As soon as they left the entire table woke up. "That was so weird!", "They were obviously colluding!", and so on. Then floor came over to me and said they had reviewed the tapes but couldn't find anything conclusive. Like really?! Or were you just happy with max rake almost every single hand?

^^this

If you can spot it, see if you can exploit it.

If not, then casually say something sarcastic at the table..”that’s pretty slick, …you guys play together often”? Chuckle and play it off.

They’ll know that you know, and then so will the dealer.
