Do you draw for seats in your cash games?

I think Mo sits there because the AC blows colder on the other end of the table. I remember when he used to sit on the other end and would grumble about the cold.

Having position on the maniac is definitely an advantage.

And I end up with you having position on me all the time - so I guess that makes me the table fish!
Also, you've heard him lament about being a wild player, and how he plays trash cards and loses money? Yeah...so...that's not that true, as you've seen. He told me a minute after I mentioned his several session seat switch, "Also, you bluff and push, so I'll sit here."

If you weren’t constrained by wanting to stay in the dealer spot you could institute a seat change button or two.

Seat changing is one of my least favorite aspects of casino poker though. Kinda scummy when done for bum hunting. Humorous when done for luck reasons. Understandable when trying to get out of 1 or 9 seat. In a home game it could mix things up.

I've got seating chips galore. Was just asking about the cash game aspect.

Interesting. Never really gave it a thought.

The cash games I have attended is first come first to choose their seat, although most players seem to have their preferred spot at the table. I think having to draw for seats is good for the game. It breaks players out of their comfort zone.

I draw A-8 or 9 of one suit (or more if have 2 or more tables) from a deck, shuffle around, and line up on the felt. Ace is the button, 2 is SB, 3 is BB, etc. However draws the Ace sits down first wherever they want and the others sit in accordance to their corresponding seat numbers. Works well with tournaments.

Usually do this when most people arrive since some like to socialize a little before playing. Whoever doesn't draw an ace out of the first batch of people there has the Button go to the 2 card holder and keep the chair open for the Ace holder whenever they come and pick that card.

Had a league that had these number cards, two of each number and you sit where the number there matched your card. Then people throw cards from the deck and whoever got the highest value card was Dealer. I thought it was a waste of time where the method I first described here kills two birds, no hassle or needing to buy matching number cards just for random seating.

We play cash games. My crew are getting more aware of position.

For a few years now we have been drawing for seats. We use face up cards to mark the seats and have the corresponding card (from other colour deck) face down on the felt. We have a round table so no need for me to sit in the same spot. They choose as they arrive and we generally don't kick off until we have pretty much everyone. In the event a couple are running late, we choose for them as per @detroitdad :)

A couple of games ago I didn't bother doing the cards thing, and sure enough, one of the more experienced players sat down on my left haha. On the flip side, one of my newer players announced that he had been 'learning about positional play on YouTube' and then promptly sat on my right haha, soooo... :)

we'll usually pre-game a bit on the patio

I usually try to sit somewhere in the middle to decrease my chances of mis-dealing when it’s my turn (without any thought on position relative to certain players).

Though I have noticed that when I play with friends, 1-2 people will try to sit to the left of the most aggro player - so I like the idea of random draw for seats.

I don't do a draw for my game. There are a couple of people that prefer specific seats that are next to the beer cooler or get less traffic or people getting up for bathroom/beer/smoke break.

In your situation I would start doing table draw. I'm going to pay closer attention at my game and see if this is happening to some of the weaker players.

i also have the same guy that always sits to my left , is it a compliment or is he targeting me? i dunnoooooo

I'm not smart enough to figure out how to vote but if I was I would vote YES!!! As my seat is always fixed so I can use the shuffler/deal/be the house I have the 1st person choose a card that's their seat & then pick a 2nd card for me so we know where to place the button. Easy, fair & no one complains...about seating anyway!

I do something similar now that I'm running a shuffler. I state where my seat is at the table (in the middle on one side) and then all other seats are based off of that. So for example I have a dedicated place / seat and if I were to draw seat 5, seat 6 would be next to me going clockwise and so on...

So normally I've always run my cash game as "pick whatever seat you want" - we'll usually pre-game a bit on the patio and then wander inside at the start time. That said, I'm always dealing so always sit at the center on the chip drawer side of my table.

In the most recent few games I've noticed the strongest player at my game has started always sitting directly to my left. I called him on it with a smile last game as he sat down, and he said "wouldn't you sit on your left?" This is going to be an every game thing going forward and, selfishly, not the most ideal for me to be playing into our number one guy every single cash game.

Accordingly, was thinking about drawing for seats instead. Mark the poll above whether or not you draw for seats in your cash games, and curious on any color you can provide in the comments below.

This is what I've been doing after originally posting this thread. I ended up directly on the left of this player in question last night. :)

Players just pick their own seats as they arrive. Most players usually sit in the same place each game. No one cares.

If anyone cares, draw.

If no one cares, don't bother. Wait until someone cares.

If only two people care (like you and the smart guy who always wants to sit to your left) then let them flip for it.

I know who is showing up in advance, so when we draw seats, anyone not already present gets their seat drawn for them and that’s where they sit when they show up.
This is the way to do it in my opinion. We always draw (except for me) I even have some fancy Miramar seating chips for this purpose.

When we have cashgame nights we're usually two tables. Through popular demand, we draw every 50 minutes and take a 10 minute break. It wasn't my idea, I was actually a bit against it, but it works really, really well! It's great to get different table dynamics every hour! And, you get to play against almost everyone which makes the event more sociable. Most of my players (if not all players?) like it this way, nobody has complained yet. :)

When we have tourney night we're usually three tables, and in the loser's cashgame you pick whichever seat you want. It would be too much overhead to do it any other way.

I draw for seats for my cash game. I draw first, sit in the middle of the table, then everyone else draws.
If you're going to sit in the dealer seat (as I usually do as well), there's no point in you drawing. Just remove the highest number from the draw, and seat 1 is to your left....

I’ve always been a draw for tournaments, sit wherever you want for cash games kind of guy.
I think position matters more for tournaments, because there are always going to be times in a tournament where you HAVE to put your chips in, in the next orbit or two. That’s never the case in cash games.
Also for tournaments, the appearance of everything being fair and equal and random is somehow more important. So the random draw is necessary.
I don’t care, for cash games. I feel like you should be able to adapt to whatever. If people wanted a draw for cash games, I guess I wouldn’t throw a tantrum, but I’m for keeping things as casual as possible. Some people want to be able to see the tv, so people want their backs to it. Some people want to be close to the AC, some want to be close to the door. So I’m against drawing whenever it can be avoided.

If they do not like the available seats then tell them to get there earlier next time.
Except that here the advantage goes to whichever of the two shows up later, because he can pick the seat on the other guy's left (or close to it) and the guy who showed up first can't control that.
