Recently, Reddit decided to impose massive API fees to third-party apps with almost zero warning. This feels like a play to kill these apps, drive users to the official Reddit app (which is a dumpster fire), and boost stats prior to an expected IPO in the near future.

Starting Monday, a large number of subreddits are going private to protest the outlandish API fees and the lack of warning. I'm planning to support this myself by taking the week off and not using Reddit at all. For years, I have used an app called Baconreader for nearly all of my redditing, and that app (along with others) will be forced to shut down at the end of the month unless something changes.

Redditors of PCF, what are you doing this week? Continue to reddit and just deal with the lack of certain big subreddits for now? Temporary/permanent reddit vacation? Any plans for trying other services like Lemmy or Discord?

I reddit, don't like it.

Recently passed my 10 year cake day and I think yesterday was my last time meaningfully going on Reddit. Gonna spend some time grabbing content from my saved posts/comments and then I’m done. Content quality has been tanking for ages, the best subs are not active enough to be worth checking and capitalism has the company in a death grip.

Soooo, anyone here on Tildes and able to invite me?

Nothing out of the ordinary. TBH, I wholeheartedly don't give a shit.

I log into Reddit on desktop using a browser almost every day and use it to waste time and participate in subs related to my industry. If it goes away, it goes away. I don't get involved or emotionally invest in protests or any of that garbo... if it goes away something useful will eventually replace it.

Recently passed my 10 year cake day...
People actually care about this?

Why? Who TF cares about the anniversary of the day they created their accounts?
I didn’t say, “I recently passed my ten year cake day and it was the most important day of the year to me and I cried thinking about all the good times.”

I just used the Reddit argot for describing how long one has been using the site. Not so bizarre methinks.

Hope today is a happier day for you :)

Sometimes I go on reddit, then I realize that they let anybody post whatever the fuck they want and then I realize that we are not far off from monkeys and I leave it. Damn, people are stupid.

reddit can burn to the ground and it won't affect me. Maybe Twitter will catch fire too.

None of the porn subreddits are shutting down, so nothing changes for me.

One of the other changes Reddit is making is to eliminate access to NSFW content from third-party apps. So as long as you're getting your jimmies rustled via browser or official app, you're okay - otherwise bye bye porn.

I always use the desktop version of old reddit on my phone through Chrome. I never found an app that was appealing to me and I just like the look of old reddit.

Great! This is a positive for me.

Reddit is really good for when I'm watching a reality show, and somebody is very annoying. Then I google "Chris top level chef annoying" and then read all the reddit links for all the hate. Do I need an app for that?

Okay, but seriously, is anyone in Tildes and able to invite me? Serious fomo after lurking for the last few weeks

I can't turn down a good boycott so I'm out. Used it daily though, but it has been less useful the last years.
