New user and very first post!

Has anyone ever used their local casino chips for their home games? I’m trying to build a set of $1 and $5 chips from my local casino so when I have home games I’m not worrying about people not cashing their chips, and if I lose a few I can just grab some at the casino.

Has anyone ever went straight up to the cage and asked for say, 20 $1 chips? I know they probably won’t dish out racks of chips so I figured if I do a small bunch at a time it would go unnoticed.
I’m also really considering the $1 Key West redeemable chips as an option as well. Anyone have any experience redeeming these? Any extra cost and what’s the turnover time?

Welcome to the forum. Alot of useful information is going to be said. Keep a open mind!

Not the cheapest set you can build. But there is something to be said about “cash value" poker chips that you can always keep or cash back out for your money if you ever wanted to!

Like this?

If the casino has a poker room it should be pretty easy to get racks of $1’s. Some casinos like Paris in Vegas won’t sell you racks of $1 chips but plenty of people manage to get them anyways. $5 and up chips they will gladly sell you all you want as the casino is making a nice profit if you don’t bring them back.

Thanks for the advise, unfortunately my local casino does not have a poker room as of right now, though Encore casino in Boston has one but is about a 2hr drive. May try to snag some the next time I’m down there is I haven’t already felted

That must of cost a fortune to build.

There was idea of doing that but it would require one of two solution for person holding the bank:
1. People coming to the game would have to visit the same local casino to purchase chips, they would have to take into account possible rebuys,
2. Person holding bank would have to invest a substantial amount of money to make such solution possible.

Ergo... No it never happened... I do however remember accepting local casino chips as a legal tender for rebuy... That was a sweet game man

What would the response be if owner decided to cash in the harvested chips... I feel like cage would be doubtful of a person coming in with a backpack full of chips...

I cashed in about 164 ones pulled out of my wife's purse one time.

The cage immediately had to call a manager. I told them they were live chips that I acquired from another person who took them out of the casino for use in a home game (the truth). They took my ID, checked a few of the chips for authenticity and gave me the cash. It is not a casino I frequent. I imagine I'm on a list to keep an eye on. I definitely got the vibe that it has probably only happened once or twice to the employees I dealt with in many years. I don't think something like that is normal behavior :)

I will admit I was a little nervous.

Right now I have 400 live Greektown Detroit 1's that I am debating selling or cashing in... They took a very long time to acquire (10 visits or so)

Not sure how I would gracefully cash them in.......lol....

Correct. If it cannot be proven that you either 'leased' or won them in the casino, it is assumed that they were obtained illegally. They are property of the casino, and removal from the casino is technically theft.

Well that seems fairly outrageous. I'd like to see the definition of "obtained legally".

Might go read the regs for a bit of fun lol

Well, if you got the chips from the cage or gaming tables (legally), they'll have video footage of it. No worries. On the other hand, if the chips ever left the casino......

I doubt they do for $1s but if someone shows up with big value chips the risk to the casino of facilitating money laundering and other illegal transactions is high.

Welcome!

All I ever did was buy a $1 and a $5 from every casino I ever entered. The people in the cage are usually very nice about it. Some even went out of their way to find me mint ones.

Hadn't thought about it in this context. Makes a bit more sense. Still seems pretty questionable, but at least they can put some logic into it.

If you don't frequent that casino very regularly, isn't there some risk that they will change their chips and no longer take the old ones? Obviously, this isn't a big issue for the $1 chips, but it would make me nervous to have $5, $25 or $100 chips that are live.

That said, the Bellagio set looks very nice.

So, Spinetti’s could be facing a litany of charges?

I cannot speak to how Spinetti's obtained any of their chips, live or otherwise.
