Honestly, I feel like if people think they have a chance to grab the rack for short money, and they stay interested, dollar by dollar, they might get wrapped up and gradually start feeling better about paying more than they wanted to, or just keep competing to try to win. But if you drop the big bid early, you separate out the people who maybe didn't want it that much, or maybe didn't want to pay that much, before they get a chance to get wrapped up.
It's a strategy. But I don't know if it's a good one.
