I had something come up last night and I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know what the "official" ruling should have been.

12 Player Tournament
We are down to final 3.
Big Stack puts the other two remaining players All-In.
He knocks them both out.

Who gets 2nd place:
  1. 2nd and 3rd split both 2nd and 3rd payouts (we did this, the players didn't seem to care or mind)
  2. Whoever had the larger stack going into the final hand should have gotten second. (player B would have gotten this)
  3. Whoever had the better hand (although them both lost to the Winner) should have gotten second. (player C would have gotten this).

is there a "official" rule? Or does it depend on what the host (me) should have posted (should i have posted something before hand)?

thanks.

2nd place goes to whoever had the most chips between the two players that got knocked out which was player B
Thanks Bill. That’s what I thought. But I wasn’t confident enough to make a snap decision on it since both players kind of assumed they’d split. (And I didn’t want to get it wrong).

If both assumed the split and are okay with it, the split is better anyway. No reason to stick to the rules here.

Make sure you tell the guys before the next game, but if big stack is also fine with it, keep the option to split open. It does change the dynamics so big stack has to have a say in it. In a friendly home game it should not matter.

I don't like giving the option. It puts unnecessary pressure on players. The host makes a decision and announces it before the next game. Then whatever you decide to do, keep it consistent. Inconsistent rules will hurt a game as much as drunk assholes.

Roberts Rules, Tournaments

35. If multiple players go broke on the same hand, the player starting the hand with the larger amount of chips finishes in the higher place for prize money and any other award. Players eliminated on the same deal who start their final hand with an equal amount of chips receive equal prize money, with the best hand on that deal receiving any non-divisible award.

As the host/TD, it is important that you stick to the rules. This is key to maintaining a friendly home game environment. Sticking to well established rules equals no (or at least rarely) controversy. No controversy equals no hard feelings.

Therefore, second place money should have gone to the player who entered the last hand with the most chips, but hey, you didn’t know and these things happen. So, you have two choices here. One, make a house rule to say when two players are eliminated in the same hand in one or more of the cash positions, the players will split the cash evenly. (I wouldn’t recommend this one, but if you think your players are OK with it...). Or, two, announce you made a mistake that will stand, but from now on you will be following the right rule.

Either way, it’s important your players know what you will do because it affects play and will avoid problems. Either way you decide, stick to it. Good luck and good playing.

P.S. This is just a pet peeve of mine, but the winner didn’t put the other two players all in. They put themselves all in. Nobody can bet other players chips.

P.P.S. Not a stupid question at all. If you don’t know, you don’t know and this is a good place to get answers, but you already know that.

Definitely not a stupid question! While technically you ruled wrong absent an announcement to the contrary either before the game or as your standard, if players are OK, that worked great. If the one with the most chips ever says to you, "I looked it up and I should have taken 2nd," then yur response should be there is no way to appeal after the tournament.

Thanks guys. I’ve got good group. I’ve already told them if it happens again we’d pay it differently. Everyone is ok with decision.
