Protege Poker Chips

Calling @Joe Harris !!!

I'm almost tempted to snap buy these and pass them along to Joe Harris just so that he doesn't miss out! He's been begging for these in every thread, lol.

I might buy these if he doesn't want them, but I want to make sure he has a chance first :)

WAKE UP JOOOOOOEEEEEE!!!!!!!

I had posted these in his wanted thread, they're local pickup only so he was working on having someone grab em I think.

Thanks guys, I did see these a few days ago and @CraigT78 offered to pick them up and ship them to me - but that was before the seller removed the 'make offer' option. As it stands they're a bit pricey for me. :(

Ya, I wouldn't call them a "good deal", but if you're really after this set, you might not find a better auction for quite some time. I'd send the seller a PM and see if they'll accept $1400 if it were me .

I have tried to make an offer to this guy too (secretly on Joes behalf) and it was refused.

At this point, it's now my mission to get Joe all the protégés out there

This same set came up on CT when it was for sale on CL several years ago for what was considered a premium price back then. I've been closely following Protege prices for years, and was for some time the main buyer for of open sales that I was aware of before @Joe Harris went on his Protege buying mission. I've kept somewhat in the loop on private transactions as well, and these do appear to be priced well above the market. I've been surprised for how much some chips have sold for, but none of the price jumps to date have been as large (% wise or $/chip) as this one would be if they sold at this price. Previous price jumps have been by people looking to add very specific chips to their sets.

What @RainmanTrail says is true; it may be unlikely to see another stand alone Protege set in the immediate future. Is it possible these will sell at this price? Sure. Are the known buyers willing to pay this much? Not to my knowledge. Are there better chips out there for $3 each? I should hope so. Are there other Protege chips available on the market? If there are, I'd love to be clued in!

I haven't researched these extensively yet, I can get to that tonight if you'd like. But my guess is that you're not likely to find these for less than $2 per, and likely $2.50 to $3 per is probably not unlikely to be the new normal.

...likely, like you know?

The Protege line would be particularly difficult to analyze. They exemplified BCC's reputation for variation.

Edit: Phone decided to post while I was still typing...

As I was saying, some very specific versions of specific chips could command a premium to the right buyer. I've overpaid for a small quantity once for this reason. Some of the more valuable chips haven't been sold in the open for years as best as I can tell, so I suspect the data are insufficient for all but the most common chips.

Does anyone have any idea how many were manufactured?

Are we talking about as little as 20,000 or more like 250,000?

It may be posted in the contest/group buy threads or perhaps by Mr. A. afterward.

It is certainly more than 20,000. I wouldn't be surprised if the figure is in the six digit range, or close to it. There were several production runs over several years, but I don't think anyone aside from BCC and Sidepot would be able to produce an exact count. The chips were ordered several times from the initial production run more or less through BCC's closure as best as I can tell. The production runs include the original group buy, supplementals, and a striking number of variations in the re-orders of the original denominations.

Sidepot's website says that 50k were sold before production started, which was the original group buy, so Split's assessment seems good to me.

I don't think Sidepot posted a lot in general, but it wouldn't shock me if the numbers have been mentioned somewhere - or if a member knows/remembers.

So they are out there and it is likely that some people don't even realize that BCC is gone and they can't reorder. That happened with a pickup of InPlays I got in VA although I do feel a little bad about not disclosing that fact. .... Okay not too bad. He set the price!

The old Sidepot site said,

"The award-winning Protégé clay poker chip line is the most popular clay chip set in the history of Sidepot Gaming - 50,000 chips were sold before we even started production."

You can see the site as of 10-26-2011 here (or check how it looked on other dates).

Someone might find updates as to how many were produced at the chip site where the group designed it.

About the Protege Clay Poker Chip Line

The Protégé clay poker chip line is the outcome of an innovative project where a poker chip collecting community was given full reign on designing every element of a new chip line to fit into Sidepot Gaming Company’s retail mix. We sponsored the project, and helped to moderate the progression of the design. It was largely a blank slate project and the deeply knowledgeable community was given the latitude to affect nearly every element of the chip. When the project started, there was a palette of 35 or so chip colors, 15 or so edge spot configurations, and 10 or so printed inlay shapes. Combined there were literally millions of options for the community to choose from.

By the end of the project, the collective influence of the community pushed us in directions we never imagined from the outset. In addition to the truly inspired chip colors and design they voted in as the winner, they both guided us to create one of the heaviest clay chips on the market and persuaded us to bring back true punched/shaped inlays, a throwback poker chip inlay feature that hadn’t been seen in the consumer poker chip market for several decades. What was initially planned to be a 60-90 day project ended up taking closer to 9 months. What our designers initially thought was a bit of a gamble, turned into one of the most anticipated high-end poker chip lines of the past few years, if not ever.

With over 150 active participants making thousands of collective contributions and voting on every element of the chip design, the Protégé chip line is, we believe, as close as one can come to a grassroots, collaborative community design project. And it worked! The truly beautiful winning chip line proves the promise of what can be accomplished by tapping into the collective intelligence and creativity of a highly interested group of casino chip fanatics.

Cigar & Snifter mold

The Protégé line uses Sidepot’s throwback Cigar & Snifter mold, what some insiders in the poker chip industry consider the finest mold ever produced. The engraving design features an intricate cigar and snifter design, repeated 8 times around the track of the chip. Two concentric circles frame this repeating design, one inside and one outside.

Like our previous flagship line, the InPlay Clay, the innovation that really sets the Protégé line apart from every poker chip in the world is the innovative smooth feel of the track and edge of the chip combined with the popular textured, cross-hatched inlay surface. Unlike all other clay chips in the world, which come out of the factory with a rough surface, our Protégé chip has an unmistakable smooth feel right out of the box - exactly like a chip that has been properly broken-in within the casino environment.

Industry Leading Innovation! Vintage true shaped/punched inlays.- The unquestionable marquee of our exclusive Protege clay poker chip line. A highly coveted poker chip feature in the casino chip collecting industry for years, and unavailable for several decades on newly produced chips, the Protege line eloquently brings back this classic retro styling.

Industry Leading Innovation! Smooth clay touch and feel built right into the mold of the chip – A major innovation for home game poker chips that gives them the feel of a poker chip that’s been properly broken-in within a casino environment.

Award-winning Colors and Inlay Design! Award-winning design by William R. Coughlan.

100% Authentic Casino Chips - Same clay chips, same manufacturer, as those used in numerous popular Las Vegas casinos including the prestigious Aladdin.

Exclusive mold - This chip line uses Sidepot Gaming Company's highly touted throwback mold design, the Cigar & Snifter mold.

Textured cross-hatched inlay surface - Not flat and lifeless just because it’s easier to make.
