Not sure where to start this conversation. Or if I'm the guy to start it. But...to quote @doublebooyah85 from another thread (a thread I don't want to hijack):
Without a doubt for the benefit of the hobby we need a chip library created by PCF

@Tommy Is it possible to create a proper database under RESOURCES? What is there is not robust enough, I think, to provide the functionality we really need. Or, if the forum software is not compatible with this, a subdomain (e.g. chipdatabase.pokerchipforum.com) and let a volunteer with skills build it? I think once the structure is created, members will quickly populate it. Some moderators with good knowledge would need to curate.

could even link sales of them to PCF.
This is brilliant. Automatic cross-linking between the sales and database would be super useful. We could build in lots of useful features. Tagging with spot patterns and colors. Letting members create "lists" or "virtual collections." (E.g., all housemold cali-style $20s); or whatever members want to collect. Heck, the ability to create fun Sporcle style quizzes with the data and photos would be cool. Lots that could be done with a bit of imagination.

Sorry if I'm overstepping here.

Not saying any opinion on the idea. But lord can you believe the fights with a actual database with sales and charts to fight over.

I'm hemming and hawing about making a 'chip mold' / chip identification tool on my own vs trying to do it internal to PCF. This is not "what casino is this chip from?" but rather "what is this chip... its mold, manufacturer, maybe ballpark manufacturing year, etc."

The biggest thing needed is "Faceted Search" like you get on e-commerce sites. You're looking for "brand X, in size Y, tops, for Men" and this filters down from all options to "Here's your Men's Nike Hoddies in Medium."

The purpose for chip ID is something like "it has diamonds on it" which filters down from 200+ possible molds, to ~40? And then "Is it plastic or is it clay-ish?" which separates ABS chips, casino plastic, etc... into just China Clay and Trad Clay (which newbies probably can't tell the difference, especially in photos).

Without the Faceted Search for filtering, the process is extremely cumbersome as you have to start with categories, then search thru the category hoping to find what you want. This is how Eisenstadt's guide was set up. And it mostly works, but fails many times and in frustrating ways.

So! If faceted search could be done here on PCF, that would definitely tilt me towards trying to build here.

How this looks from a back-end standpoint, if I understand correctly, is having basically tags/categories/attributes that apply to chips. Casino Name would be a category, and Caesar's would be the subset. Location could be the category, then Atlantic City and Vegas are subsets. By Combining Location + Casino name you get to find a Caesar's Atlantic City chip, simply by clicking a few boxes and filtering from all chips. Again, this differs from the ChipGuide's "start with a picture of the country, choose your state, and now here's a list of casinos in that state."

So these big categories can be "Manufacturer" or "Chip type (fantasy, casino, etc...)" but also "edge spots" and "color" and on and on...

I've read this is not as easy as it sounds to actually implement, because you're starting with such a massive set (all chips) which then need to be actively filtered each time the user clicks a box...

Just my two cents!

When that site went down for a while, I created it here so the info would not be lost.

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/pcf/antiquegamblingchips-mold-designs/

It's only accesialble if the URL is know. I didn't put a link to it in the navigation as the site came back up and people should continues to use Eisenstadt's website.
I have migrated it into the Resources where you have search and filters for it, but it is not publicly available.
