Poker Night With Pat! (old folks home) (1 Viewer)

Thanks and May God bless you as well! This is one of the highlights of my weeks. Sometimes I forget and then at 5:15pm I’ll be like “Oh man today’s Friday, poker night let’s gooo!! If nobody has a terminal illness or is currently hospitalized we gonna play some cards!”

Seriously though, with the numbers we’ve lost I really cherish the time I get to spend with these folks.

I love seeing new posts to this thread. Confident that I have posted before this, but was thinking about this today.

I have worked in healthcare for 20 years and my career started as a physical therapy aide in a nursing facility. These were some of the best times I remember in my career.

Pat, there really is no value that you can place on what you do. This gives residents something to look forward to and be motivated by. Also good for them to turn their gears on a skill game. I can see this being a very popular activity if it were more common in the rec rooms around the country. Anything to get patients out of bed, out of their room, and socializing with each other.

This one has a soft spot for me Pat - keep it up!

I’m impressed with the numbers we’ve had over the years. Everything from people who know poker to brand new players.

The new players impress me the most jumping in and learning our semi-circus games.

Just want to say, this is awesome. I spent quite a few mornings in the assisted living home with my great grandmother playing cards while she was there, and the nurses always talked about how much of a difference those days can make. Thank you for doing this for people!

I booked a small win this week playing 5 handed. Nancy popped back up after missing out the last few weeks. She felt bad about flipping cards but we stopped correcting her. Not that big a deal really, especially to lose a player over it. I was pretty fried out and chill so I gave no shits.

I did call her King Ten for a hand after she flashed her entire 5 card draw hand. We’re glad she’s back and the her hair was looking crispy AF.

Sue and Ed both left with stacks. Ed crushed all night with the biggest streak of boats we’ve ever seen.

We got back on the Keith Whitley talk and I tried to switch to talking bout Lori Morgan’s tits. Nobody cared but me and Patrick.

After the talk about the man with the golden mane, Sue and Nancy started talking bout buying jumbo rubbers, because the ones she had were pinned to her cork board.

Nancy says “We could use some of those ones with holes because nobody in this place could get pregnant.”

Ed, who never hears anything, heard this and literally spun his hat sideways! Funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Me and Patrick were dying.

Fun week.

Fun night was had by all this week despite my pal Luke's face here. He is a good buddy from the VFW I'm a member at and lives right down the road. Former Air Force whiz kid. Smart dude.

We were debating on playing because Ed decided to turn 95. His loving family planned a dinner on Friday so we thought the game was gonna be a bust. I get a call from Sue at about 5pm and I knew it was on. Worst case we would play 4 handed.

Nancy made it back to the game. We scared her away because we all wanted to teach her the games but she kept flipping over her cards. Now we all agreed to not say anything to her when she does that. I don't say anything to her about it but when she's messing up or about to do something dumb, I point at her and growl like a man-dog. She's getting the rules and flow down but still plays like shit.

Rocking the Clyde Coleman Crescent Star bike tires, along with the Jerry's Card Palace $5's also bike tires.

Blue is a nickel
Poopy Browns are a quarter
Card Palace $5's are a 50 cent chip

I told Nancy the browns were made outta real poop and will get on her hands. I saw her looking at her fingers after the hand. I was hoping she went for a whiff but no.

Sue runs the lil store they have in house and is all up in the know. She might be the ambassador or something cool like that. Anyways, she saw Ty earlier in the day and he was amped to play. Later she heard he fell down and whacked his head.

I thought that was it for our new friend, but to everyones surprise he came wandering in at about 9:30. No clear head injury and he lost the wheelchair. Now he is pushing a clanky metal walker. He had issues with his feet or legs and is getting better but, like everyone around this place he is old. So I told him since he is old he shouldn't be using a clanky metal walker and he needs a sweet, roller one like everyone else has.

Luckily, I am the guy in charge of the VFW's pile of walkers, rollers, crutches, canes and wheelchairs. So I am gonna run Ty a nice roller tomorrow. It's a black on black roller and looks really tough. It'll go well with Ty's break dancing gloves and has room for his dumb bells if he wants to rep out some curls.

I ended up with a straight in this hand of Chicago Deuces wild. It was just Sue and I in the hand for a relatively small pot. I always play up the "pissed off dude that thought he was gonna win" when I lose to Sue. It gets her all fired up and laughing. Real belly laughing here. She's not faking it just to rub it in that she took $2.50 from ya. And she especially likes it when she beats Ed or myself. Total vendetta shit.

We wanted to play late this week and were hoping Ed and his cronies would show up eventually and play. The birthday party went late and we didn't get to see Ed until almost 10:45-11pm. He came rolling in alone and we didn't cut him out any chips. It was the last orbit anyways. He did say he'd play with Nancy and help her out. I told him "She don't need no help Ed. She's starting to get it." You know, trying to prop her up a bit and make her feel good.

Ed ruined the feel good vibes when she flips up her down cards up or something and Ed's like " DON'T TURN YOUR CARDS OVER!!" hahah. I'm like "Hey Ed, remember we let that go?"

Ed, no reply, didn't hear me and is talking to Nancy about why flipping cards over is bad.

Ty is super involved in a lot of hands. His favorite move is the ol "I call your quarter and raise it 5 cents." Sometimes I make him stand with his verbal call or raise him just because he left the betting open. Then I say why I'm raising him. He still does it. Every hand.

Ed brought me a little run good at the end. I peeled the Ace of Spades right out the rip in this hand of Chicago deuces.

Luke was showing JJ2 and Sue had 552. Every street I checked-raised and every street they knew I had the high spade. Still called. They both were just too strong to fold. I think I split with Luke. Pretty big pot. I ended up leaving with $20. Up one buy-in.

Awesome night with these degens. DIdn't make it home till midnight.

I start vacation on Monday. If you have room this coming Friday I would like to join you guys for a game!

5 Card Omaha where you can play all 5 in the mitt..?

That's 2 or 5.

Big O is five cards in the mitt. Standard community board. You play for the best high and the best low. You must use two, and only two cards out of your hand for each half of the pot (they can be the same two cards)

Copy! I guess we just play 5 card Omaha. Too many newbs for the high lows I think.

Start at 7? Let me know if I can bring anything? Snacks? Ect...

Next Friday you mean? Nah I mean I'll eat chips or pretzels if you bring them. Theres a snack machine taking up half the room so they are right there. You coming back to play with the big dogs?? lol

This coming Friday if there is room. And why did this a few times. It was always so rewarding and such a blast.

Yeah there will be room. And if we get 8 players I'll full time deal and squeeze in on one of the residents walker or something. We just got your boy Ty a new jet black walker. You gotta see it Bill.

Oh! bring small bills if you really want to help a brother out. We have been running into change issues because I usually am rushing to get there on time and only have a $20. God for bid I show up at 7:02 or something like that. It'll be 3 trips to the front desk and 2 calls to my cell. haha

$200 in ones all crammed into a crown royal bag should work.

No man if you plan on bringing a few bullets and playing wild like you always do, make one of those bullets be $1's and $5's if you remember.

When we can't find change we sent someone across busy and dark Middlebelt Rd. Last week it was Nancy. She still has not returned.

Tyrone has to go get change next week and he can barely walk. We need a new system Bill.

“95!” Ed’s running good!
Yessir!! Dude is still a giant and the kids say he played college basketball. You know back when they used a pumpkin for a ball and a peach basket. I guess he was always the super tall guy back then.

I'm on vacation all week starting tomorrow. It is a well deserved vacation.

I have plenty of time to swing by the bank and grab some ones and fives.

Full table tonight and your boy started off as the dedicated dealer.

We had all the usual suspects along with a new gal named Barb. She was a little rusty and but ended up doing just fine. Ended up leaving $15 up. She was about to leave and we goated her to play for another orbit.

Then her brand new, electronic chair lurched forward into the table. No chips were injured. She also slammed into the door jam on the way out. Scared the crap outta me and Bill. Sounded like a gun shot.

Jadin got beat up pretty good in the beginning. Ed gave him about $5 off his stack which he turned into about $12 by the end of the night. Sue had piles but gave most the the kid.

Barb started going nuts! 50 cent antes and talking bout “We need to get some damn money out there.”

Ty rolled up later, after Nancy busted out. Lost the fingerless gloves and says he loves the push cart we got him.

We had a blast last week and played four handed. Nancy was in Florida, Jaiden was being a lame and nobody knew anything about Tyrone.

I bought a gaudy and cheap watch to wear at poker. Sue and Ed thought it was SO cool. So we did a triple watch picture.

The hands were moving fast so pictures were limited. Ed re-loaded another $10 and left with $18. Almost even.

He did hit the Steel Wheel in a hand of Omaha. Sue made the regular Wheel but was no match for Ed.

What happened to the new gal Barb? I kinda liked her after she said, “come
On, let’s get some money in there!” Lol
The lore around the home is that Barb is always ready to play, or so she says. And she’s feels really, really bad about leaving after she went up $15.

She tried to skin out when Nancy lost her stack but, we got here to play another entire orbit. That was more than gracious of her to play more when she wanted to scoot. I can see if she wanted to leave when Nancy did. I think Nancy was there for an hour and a half.

Nobody cared and we were happy to have her. Hopefully she comes back but who knows. I’ve learned the players and residents here can have pretty wild mood swings and personality changes at the drop of a hat.
