Which of these sets (PNYs, HSIs, TPs) should I sell?

After a flurry of sales (at big losses :/), I've pared down my chips to just three cash sets:

1. President Casino New Yorker (PNY)
2. Horseshoe Southern Indiana (HSI)
3. Tiger Palace primaries (TP)

All three are Paulson, all three are mint-ish (the PNYs have been felted maybe 20 times but essentially no wear). All three can bank a single table of 1/2 no problem, which is as high as I've ever hosted.

All three are great sets.

But...

The HSIs and TPs have never been felted. The PNYs haven't been felted since 2019. I got into chipping when I was single and hosting games almost weekly. Now I've got small kids in a small apartment and don't see myself hosting anytime in the next few years.

I got into chipping for chips to be used, not for them to sit on my closet shelf. So I've committed to selling at least one of these great sets, likely two, and possibly (but unlikely) all three.

Here's some more info about each one:

PNYs

$.25 x 100 (blue trimoon)
$1 x 200
$5 x 500
$25 x 200 (pri)
$100 x 100 (sec)
$500 x 20 (sec)

Total bank: $27,725

This was my first non-dice set. I bought these fairly close to the original PNY offering on ChipTalk back in 2005 (?) for somewhere in the vicinity of $1/chip. Back then, I played and hosted tourneys almost exclusively, so bought a set heavy on $25s, $100s and $500s, with just a rack of $5s and a few barrels of $1s (and a barrel of $20s).

Five years ago or so, due to time constraints, I switched almost exclusively to cash, so sold off the $500s, most of the $100s and the $20s and used that to subsidize racks of $5s and $1s at market prices. And finally, recently "completed" the set by adding a rack of blue PNY quarters and a barrel of $500s (should've just kept a rack!). The set now can bank up to 2/5.

PNYs are pretty much the most polarizing set on PCF, but I'm firmly in the lovers camp for a few reasons:

  • I'm a native NYer
  • I actually like oversize inlays, and specifically these inlays - the clear denoms, the typography, the background pics of NYC landmarks
  • I'd been excited when I heard that there'd be a NYC "riverboat" casino and then disappointed when I read that Guiliani put the kabosh on it, so appreciated that these chips were a piece of NYC history
I'd always thought this was my forever set.

HSIs

$.25 x 100 (relabeled IG pri snappers)
$1 x 200 (sec)
$5 x 400 (sec)
$25 x 200 (sec)
$100 x 160 (sec)
$500 x 40 (pri)

Total bank: $43,225

Unfortunately for my wallet, when I rejoined PCF in 2018 to buy/sell PNYs to turn my PNY set from a tourney set into a cash set, I became a chipaholic. Previously, I'd thought that owning more than one chip set was ridiculous, but spending more and more time among the other sickos on PCF, that stance softened.

And that stance was shattered once the HSI ChipRoom sale launched. The prices were reasonable (sub $2/chip), and the lineup worked really well.

Buying this set, I wanted to future proof it, so bought a lot more upper denoms than will ever likely get into my game lol. This set could bank a table of 5/10.

While it doesn't have the NYC significance for me, I prefer most of the chips to the PNYs, esp the $1s, $25s and $100s. That said, I prefer the PNY workhorse chip ($5) to the HSIs.

But my favorite workhorse chip (BY FAR) belongs to the...

TPs

$.25 x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 300
$25 x 240
$100 x 20

Total bank: $9,725

OMG I'm fairly sure I went temporarily insane after the Tigers were announced. Ultimately, I couldn't let the image of those primary $5s out of my head and I had to get a set. The whole saga taught me a lot about the mental costs of obsessing over something.

There's been a lot written about Tigers on this site, so don't need to add much. It's a gorgeous set that works really, really well together.

Unlike the PNYs and HSIs, the TP mold is THC, which most people (including myself) strongly prefer to RHC.

Also unlike the PNYs or HSIs, which cost me ~$1-$2/chip, the TPs are a lot more expensive, ~$6/chip. They've never been felted, but I'm a little concerned that if I ever did, I'd just be anxious the whole time.

And, while not a likely practical concern, increasing the bank on TPs via pri $100s is not only expensive ($10+/chip), but also super difficult -- last I checked, the pri $100s were unobtainium.

So...

Curious as to which set(s) the sickos good folks of PCF would choose to sell and which to keep!

Screw: Tigers
Marry: PNY's
Kill: HSI's

Sell the HSI's. You will never need that much bank for a single table 1/2 game and the PNY's are leaded and give you plenty of bank.

Sounds like the PNYs have a bunch more meaning to you. Selling the TP set seems obvious to me just from how you talk about it compared to the PNYs. It’s a burning hole in your wallet and in your mental.

FWIW I voted to sell the HSIs too because you’re in em at a great price and the breakdown doesn’t seem optimized for the games you could imagine hosting

The PNYs likely have the deepest ties since you're from New York, and you've had them since 2005. The background story on how the PNY and the chips came about, only to never be, is forever fascinating to me from a history point of view. And you have the original, not a knockoff tribute.

The TPs are just glorious.

I voted to sell to sell the HSIs; keep PNY and TP.

Ive played this game with my collection many many times and it only gets more difficult as I continue to curate it.

Cut HSI, take a step back, then reevaluate from there imo.

If it was me, I'd sell the PNYs, followed by HSI, but it's clear from your writeup that you have lot's of personal reasons to value the PNYs. I'd sell the HSI in your shoes.

After a flurry of sales (at big losses :/), I've pared down my chips to just three cash sets:

This is literally my EXACT scenario.

"Flurry of sales at big losses. I've pared down my chips to just three cash sets:

Adolfos, IGs, Paris chips"

As in, literally this is my exact scenario. And the problem was, I don't ever host and my chips don't hit the felt. So like you, I asked, WTF to do?!

You have some forever sets, and that's awesome. You don't have unneeded sets, and that's awesome. But you have sets just sitting, worth thousands, collecting dust. What to do?

I'm a big fan of either selling these to someone who is looking for them and wants to get them in play for free or minimal cost. Of course only if they are a friend and you know or trust them, but if someone else would love to get TPs or PNYs on the table, and they are forever sets for you that you won't ever sell, shoot them somewhere they'll get play for a year or three!

Either do that OR....

List all 3 for an extremely high price or starting auction. Throw the TPs out there for a stupid high price that you'd be ecstatic for them to sell at. If they don't sell, take them down and do same with HSIs. And so on. Either you have 3 great keeper sets, or you get paid a ridiculous amount for one of them.

If you love your current chips but don't use them, I think those are the two best +EV options.

This is a lesson how to solicite Booyah offers without posting a wanted ad.

All 3 sets are amazing! Hope you keep them all.

They certainly fall under the following “nominations” to many PCFers is my guess…

GOAT Oversized Inlay cash
GOAT RHC cash
GOAT NAGB cash

GREAT chippin!!!! BOOYAH!

As someone who has owned pnys for a minimum of 5 times. I say sell the pnys and HSI and find a tourney set.

Then just buy the pnys the next time I sell them
Some precedent for that, since I already bought my PNY quarters from you! :p

Lol. I’m not surprised at all. I love pnys but they always come back around.

But you need a tourney set. Even if you never ever will host a tourney, still need it

This would be a great option, but unfortunately, there's no one in this demographic for me.

And, honestly, I'd only do this if I were able to be a frequent guest at the games, too.

But unfortunately, live poker (whether I host or guest) is not much in my future :/

Honestly, if I sell, will be pretty reasonably priced. E.g., I'd list the Tigers for original Ken pricing, and the HSIs and PNYs for whatever sold quickly in the classifieds.

If you love your current chips but don't use them, I think those are the two best +EV options.

Well, wouldn't be the first time I didn't take the most +EV line!

Sell the HSI first and Tigers next if you still don't think you'll want to keep/play with them.

Sounds like HSI would be first to go. The PNYs are still usable and the TP are just nice to have.
