I want to purchase a CPS tournament set, but I would like to get some input on my breakdown before I finalize my order. I am looking to put together a set for 30 players, but I have an odd requirement. The set needs to be no more than 840 chips; otherwise I will have to completely reorganize my storage situation.

Here is what I have come up with:

T25 x 240
T100 x 280
T500 x 120
T1000 x 140
T5000 x 60

I think there is enough coverage for color ups, but don't know if this setup is sufficient to run a re-buy tourney with 30 players. That's not an absolute requirement, but re-buy capability would be a nice plus. Can I assume re-buys would not be a problem with 20 players?

I am interested in any tweaks that would improve the set withing the 840 chip limit.

lets just solve the problem right here, reorganize your storage situation

what do you mean by reorganize your storage situation exactly?

Are T25,000 chips available?

I opted for an 800 chip breakdown, with T25,000 as the top denomination.

For the extremely rare/unlikely time I'd have 30 players, it allows 8/8/4/7 for 16 players and 8/8/4/2/1 for the rest. Should be plenty of T5000s and T25Ks for rebuys and color-ups.

For 20 players, everyone gets 8/8/4/7.

240 x T25
240 x T100
120 x T500
140 x T1000
50 x T5000
10 x T25000
-----------
800 chips

If no T25000, just add T5000s, even up to your 840 total.

Btw, extra T100s and T500s are a waste of money and valuable chips that could be used for T5000s. All color ups should be done using T5000s (and maybe T1000s).

^^ what he said.

240 x T25
240 x T100
120 x T500
140 x T1000
100 x T5000
-----------
840 chips

Good input! Thanks!

Ok, here's what I'm thinking. As you suggest, I'll get rid of the extra 100s since they aren't needed for color-ups. I am hesitant to get so many 5Ks though. My last regular game ran tournaments with 25-30 players and we used very few T5000 chips. I am think I might rather do the following and have enough T1000s to color off all the T25s and T100s (much easier to color everyone up with 1Ks rather than 5Ks) That should still leave me with more than enough T5000s:

240 x T25
240 x T100
120 x T500
170 x T1000
70 x T5000

I have a customized chip case that holds exactly 1840 chips. With my 1000 chip PNY cash set that leaves 840 slots for a tournament set. I could put the tournament set in a different case, but then my current case would have 840 empty slots that I would have to fill (yes, I'm that anal). To fill it properly would mean 840 more PNYs, and I just can't afford that.

Well, if you never plan on using the T5000 chips (and coloring-up the T25/T100 chips using all T1000s), then you're gonna need 240 x T1000..... leaving no room in your 840-chip set for any T5000s. You also won't be able to color-up the T500s.

However, if you plan on offering re-buys, you are going to need extra T5000 chips to do so - typically 20xT5000 (for 10 re-buys) should be plenty for a 30-player field. You are also going to need 12 or so to color-up the T500s, so I'd plan on 40 total.

So to adequately cover both 20-player and 30-player events, you need 160 x T1000 and 40 x T5000 (plus the 240/240/120 breakdown of lower denoms). I'd probably split those last 40 chips and go with 180 x T1000 and 60 x T5000.

Oops. I think we're making different assumptions. I'm used to playing 5K starting stacks. For a re-buy tournament I would definitely stick to 5K stacks as the tournament would run too long otherwise.

However, even at a 10K starting stack I'm seeing the following:

Starting stacks would be 8/8/4/7 for 16 players and 8/8/4/2/1 for the rest. That uses 140 T1000s and 14 T5000 at the start.

Which leaves 30 T1000s and 56 T5000s in the bank.

The total value of the T25s and T100s is 30,000 which the amount covered by the remaining T1000s. I realize that uneven chip distribution will cause me to be a little short on T1000s, but it should be close enough.

Lets say there are 10 re-buys. That will require 20 of the remaining T5000s. So now I have 36 T5000s. Lets, say I use 6 for helping clear the T25s and T100s. Then I use 12 T5000s to color off the T500s. That leaves 18 T5000s in the bank. That leaves enough for 9 more re-buys, or a total of 19 rather than 10.

I think I am going to sell my CPS set so I can buy the Horseshoe chips that are becoming available. I have 875 chips and should be the perfect breakdown that you need. If you want to save a few bucks let me know and I will give you more details.

Here are some pics. Relabeled the 500's, 100 K and bounty. I will include the matching dealer button as well.
