If you clean 1,000 casino used poker chips in a tub with TSP, and they come out shiny and new like the day they pressed, hookerjuice is the nasty liquid left in the tub. It is highly toxic, slightly radioactive, and illegal to dump in most, but not all states.

Really? It’s toxic? :0 why?

Hot stamping is using heat and pressure to apply a metallic foil to a chip. Starburst paulsons are hot stamped.
Yes I understand what they are... lol I was asking if TSP would eat the hot stamp
Always looking for different ways to clean different chips

It's a strong base, so metals should be fine.

I've cleaned a few hot stamps in my Sonic with tsp with no problems, but that's only for about 2-3 minutes.

NEVER clean hotstamps with tsp. This is crazy.
Blue dawn and a very soft bristle toothbrush. Better to have a slightly soiled chip than damage the hotstamps.

Removes it. Dissolves might be a better word.
Yep :banghead: granted I forget about them for 10ish min

If you do it properly though and don’t exceed 1-2 mins I’d be very surprised if it damaged them.
Thanks for the info guys... I was concerned with this! We are still scrubbing chips by hand unfortunately so looking for something to add to our routine to help get the grunge out of the tophats... often scrubbing the surface doesn't get deep enough into the crevasses of the top hats and leaves gunk behind

No problem! I have cleaned hundreds using TSP without issue but per my photo it is possible for TSP to deteriorate hotstamps if you leave them in the solution for a longtime. Cleaning them in an ultrasonic where you don’t have them in the solution for more than 60sec generally, works fine.

I suspect the ultra sonic cleaning action does more to remove the hotstamp than the sodium metasilicate chemical in “tsp”. I am not a chemist, though. Perhaps this calls for an experiment?

Unfortunately we haven't invested in an ultrasonic yet

***UPDATE*** recalled that the "TSP" I was using was not actually TSP but Lundmark which is actually Sodium Meta-Silicate though advertised as TSP.

I’ve cleaned about 500 hotstamps in the ultrasonic and the only time I had an issue is when I left a batch in it for about 7-8 min (in a TSP solution) after it had already ran. I’ve also tested TSP solution alone on a hotstamp chip (no blemishes or fading prior to the test) and after 10 minutes the results were consistent albeit less flaking than with the ultrasonic/TSP mishap.

In conclusion, I think the main driver behind hotstamp damage was TSP and not the ultrasonic. However, if your hotstamps are already flaking before you put them in the ultrasonic I would imagine the jostling from the salad spinner method could produce additional wear on them.

I put 1 of my Fitzgerald quarters in for 1min as a test and my stamp was seriously degraded. Real tsp. 40C. 1min.
