I’m not a collector. I like DBs but won’t be getting into hardcore chipping. I just don’t have the desire to put in the effort to educate myself on all things related to quality chips. I’m also not ready ... yet ... to jump into a quality set of clay chips. But I do like the CDI 05s. If anything is gonna turn me, it’s those chips. I like them for a number of reasons: the bright colors, the James Bond connection, the “Paulson chips” engraved in the rim ... and from what little I understand, these are much more readily available than the very similarly colored Pharoahs (please correct me if I’m wrong about that).

Anyhoo ... assuming that I won’t be able to resist the lure of turning to the dark side forever, what’s a reasonable expectation in terms of price for a total of at least 800 chips? I like bigger chip sets, and giving players larger starting stacks, and a 500-600 chip set just won’t satisfy me in the long term. I just know it. I also don’t need mint chips, but obviously want them to be in good condition. My chips will get play. I’m not going to buy a set and sell it a few months down the line.

Again, I’m still very new to this (I currently roll out Nexgen 8000s for my home games). So any comments, suggestions, etc are appreciated in advance.

Is there more than one version of CDI 05s? I know there is a CDI 98 that’s different. But I’ve seen some CDI sets with different colors (much more muted colors). Are some inlays vs labels?

I’m getting this sample set sent to me from @Phish1321 ...

What characteristics are unique to this set? Just so I know exactly what I’m looking for?

Also, do these get posted often in the classifieds? If I wanted my 800 chip set finished within a few months, for example, is that a reasonable expectation?

There are 3 types of CDI chips, in order of date of production:

The first are known by us as the CDI98s, and have the THC mold, with varying edge spots from 50 cent to $1000
The second are the CDI2005s, and have the Paulson house mold with the same edge spot pattern from 50 cent to $1000, as in your picture above.
The third are known as the BCC CDI because they were made by the Blue Chip Company on their Sun mold and with similar spot patterns to the CDI98s.

The CDI2005s get posted in the Classifieds every now and then. There are more on eBay. Conservatively, give yourself 6 months to 2 years to put what you need together, unless you are willing to offer more to get them quickly.

Actually, there are four clay versions of Casino de Ithsmus City poker chips. In chronological order:
  • original License to Kill movie prop chips, made by Paulson on the THC mold with shaped inlays and unique color/spot combinations
  • fantasy set chips, made by Paulson on the THC mold with round inlays and color/spot combinations shared with other fantasy sets
  • fantasy set chips, made by GPI on the PAULSON CHIPS mold with round inlays and color/spot combinations shared with other fantasy sets
  • fantasy set chips, made by Blue Chip Company (BCC) on the Flame mold with oversize round inlays and color/spot combinations similar to those on the Paulson THC fantasy chips
There is also a similar set of china clay chips made by Eastony Industries for Davinci Imports on the Spirit mold with Casino da Vinci labels.

Okay, okay, I didn't count the actual props made for the movie. They were never made in bulk, nor readily available to the public, and I don't think I've ever seen one except for in the opening credits of the Licence to Kill movie, because they never used them in the actual movie (only plaques in that scene).

The CDI98s also have some variations in inlays with round inlays on all denominations, and shaped inlays on some $5, $25, $100, and $500 chips.

So you shouldn't have any problems telling the difference between the 05 CDIs and the rest. The 05s are the only version that say "Paulson Chips" and are also the only version with those bold bright colors.
