Tourney On Time Bonus... (1 Viewer)

Thanks for all the input! I am excited to give this a shot, sounds like it should have the expected results. The guys from my group that have gotten back to me are all in favor of it.

Part II of this question: For all of you that implemented the bonus and run rebuy tourneys, has the bonus had any affect in reducing the number of rebuys? With only a 10%-20% bonus, I gotta assume that the difference is negligible in terms of people busting before the end of the rebuy period.

Nope!

No difference.

Put it in place for the tourney this Saturday. Had 15 players and every one of them was paid up before the start time. It worked wonderfully. However, I did have one guy come, pay and get his bonus chip, then go home, take a shower and show back up halfway through the 2nd level. Since I did not explicitly say that you couldn't do that, I let it slide. However, in the tourney recap email, I did make it clear that once you come, pay and collect your bonus, you're there until the game starts.

Also, we still had approximately the same number of rebuys, even with the bonus added on to everyone.

We require players to be there for the start of the tournament in order to get the bonus chips.

Know your market and act accordingly

I play in two leagues right now. League 1 is a bunch of casino regfish nits and it has a t1000 on time bonus on top of a t6000 starting stack. Four games in, we have 100% on time and we even started early once.
League 2 is a social, drinking league. No on time bonus. I'd predict that it would have zero impact on timely arrivals, but would be constantly whined about if we tried to implement it.
My Tuesday night group is closer to League 2 - low stakes and very casual.

We tried the on time bonus a few years ago, and it failed miserably due to a couple of vocal complainers who successfully branded it as a late penalty.

+1 to knowing your crowd before trying this.

My guess is the complainers were among the most frequent late arrivals.

The problem with late arrivals is that the tendency of some games is to wait for them. Pretty soon your game is regularly starting 15 minutes late. When that happens, most of the group starts showing up 15 minutes late. I have seen this time and again when the starting time is not enforced.

Said player got felted at the final table after a very odd misdeal situation, so, you know, karma...

Great event Harry - improvements were excellent!

One was, but surprisingly, the loudest complaints came from the guy who is almost always among the first to arrive. I think he simply saw it as an unfair penalty even though it would never affect him.

This is exactly why we tried this rule. Games were routinely starting 15 minutes late, so people started showing up 15 minutes late, causing the games to start even later.

After the on time bonus was tried for a couple weeks, it got a little better. Ultimately we decided that the game would start on time no matter how many we were missing, and players who were on time would have the opportunity to mercilessly steal the blinds of those who were late. That largely solved the problem.

Our group has an early arrival bonus and a "bring change" bonus to make the final payment easier. Both work really well.
- All players arriving 15 minute prior to the stated start time will receive an additional 500T
- If you bring at least 2 $5 bills as part of your buy-in you will receive an additional 500T
