Howdy chip maintenance and valuation experts. I am wondering if there is any downside to cleaning old (say, older than 1990s) chips that are dirty. I know in other collecting worlds like watches you shouldn’t clean / polish antiques. Same concept apply here?
Thanks!

Personal choice. IMO They look so much better cleaned up but some, mostly singles collectors, seem to like them dirty because it is more “authentic” or some such belief that decades of hooker juice makes them more appealing.

Are they chips you use in your game (or will use in your game)?? If yes go ahead and clean them.

Collectible single chips, I prefer not to and leave that up to a future owner (I tend to not buy dirty chips for my collection, but also don't buy cleaned ones either).

This is really helpful. It’s a combination of both. I guess moving forward I’ll keep the singles as is to be safe and clean my sets! Thanks very much for the input!

If you don’t soak for more than a minute and don’t use any harsh chemicals, then you should be fine.

I personally clean chips for hygiene reasons.

I use tap water, dishwashing soap, and magic eraser.

In chip collecting, values for uncleaned vs cleaned will be the same.

Definitely your choice to keep like this or that.

Awesome, good to know I can’t go wrong other than over soaking, thanks greenchip!
