While I don't hold the license to 3-D printing or airbrushing topics, I wanted to make a thread to discuss and document my journey (as well as see what other members are doing in this space).

This started out for me back a few years. My daughter began playing Dungeons and Dragons, which I had played a lot as a kid in the 1980s. My interest was rekindled, and I started playing and DMing. This also sparked an interest in creating and painting fantasy miniatures.

I purchased an anycubic photon resin printer for about $200. I started printing, miniatures and monsters and adventures like crazy. I also purchased a bunch of miniature paints and brushes. I documented a lot of this in the "official Dungeons & Dragons thread". In that thread, I also detailed how I took a several year break from Dungeons & Dragons and 3-D printing. In fact earlier last year, I realized I hadn't touched my 3-D printer in a couple years, so I sold everything. From my printer, processing and curing supplies, everything.

Fast forward to very recently, and my interest in DND and 3-D printing has been rekindled. I purchased a much more expensive, but easier to use HeyGears RS turbo resin Printer. While more expensive, this resin printer takes a lot of the settings and guest work out of 3-D printing. With my old photon, I would spend hours slicing and supporting files. It was a hobby in itself. Then I would need to know the exact settings of exposures and such. This new printer is literally a one button push, and it just prints out a file perfectly every time. No mistakes, errors, or failed prints. An analogy to photography would be the amount of work involved in photographing, and developing 35mm film, using your own exposures and dark room. Then fast forward to digital photography that we have today, where everything is automatic and produces amazing photographs. That describes the upgrade in the 3-D printer technology.

I also purchased an Elegoo wash and gear station. It has uv LEDs and then spinning turntable that cures the resin prints.

I also put the resin printer into a grow tent that has direct exterior ventilation and an extraction fan. Fumes are bad.

I realized a lot of my 3-D printing and painting content was making its way into that D&D thread. While there is a Nexus, I wanted to avoid spamming that thread with a bunch of 3-D printing and miniature painting content.

Here are some examples of what Ive printed this far:

My early painting journey. Here are some examples of my painting a few years ago. There was a lot of growth in my ability between some of the first minis i painted and the ones near the end.

My next venture is into airbrushing. I snagged an airbrush kit from Harbor Freight, ordered a bunch of paints and brushes online, and have started out!

Heres my paint setup (this area will improve).

Using the airbrush has a very hard learning curve. I primed a number of the prints (black) then followed up with a zenithal prime, which projects a lighter color down from above where the sunlight might shine from. This provides highlights and brighter colors of the finished painted model. The airbrush is a drastic improvement over the old rattle can spray primers and such that I was using. I can prime a model, much faster, and it doesn't look splotchy. This zenithal priming also tends to highlight details.

Holy crap, man. I know next to nothing about D&D, but this stuff is absolutely insane. The first thing that popped into my head for someone like me was… card capper!

Anyway—seriously impressive. Incredible work!!!

This sucker was a larger print. I have it primed, but it also required using some epoxy putty to fill in some gaps... because of the imperfections, I wound up printing it again. This is the first one, and its nearly perfect, but the second one has turned out much better.

Printed off another dragon. After some assembly and putty, I Primed and zen highlighted this one. Such a difference the priming makes. Starting to get the hang of the airbrush, and I think this one will be an ice dragon, so ill start out with a deeper blue, then work to lighter shades.

Added a base color, then successive layers of lighter shades.

Trying for a crystaline ice dragon look. Its a work in progress, but i like where its headed. Also, this was my first ever attempt at adding color via an airbrush.

Im getting close to finalizing this first major paint project. I need to do some highlights, washes, and clean up a few spots. But for this being my FIRST, I am
Pretty happy.

This was going to be test project, practice, etc.
