A friend and I usually play OFCP pineapple, where you play your first 5 cards, then on the rest of your turns you draw 3 and play 2. Here’s the variation we came up with - you discard whenever and however you want. You just need to finish with four discards. For your first 5, you can play all five or only 1. Next turn, you can play 3 cards or 2 or 1 or none, assuming you have enough discards remaining. Etc, etc, etc.
We played it for a few hours and it was fun. Lots more to think about.

Anybody else try this?

Not really - just think of it as a 4th row: the garbage row.

I'd like it even better if you could discard from you initial draw of 5 as well.
This is under the assumption I have any skill in standard OFCP.

I've been playing for years now with a variant, where we can play 4 or 5 to start. If you play only 4 to start, then at some point you have to use all 3.

Not quite as wild as your variant, but still changes it up just a little bit. Numerous times we get to our last draw and go "oh, damn, have to use all of them!"

How to improve your OFCP skills:

  1. Go to a meet-up early.
  2. When @inca911 arrives sit idly across from him and hand him a deck of cards
  3. OFCP will happen. I would bet on it.
Story checks out, from last Thursday afternoon:
