Since today is the day before Halloween it got me thinking of when I was a kid and the fun we had on this day. What did you call this day when you were young?

Wednesday

It's now the 31st in the UK ... which is Thursday.

Never did the Halloween Eve thing, since I've always believed the full name of the holiday was All Hallow's Eve. When I was young it was mostly Mischief Night when we ran around like a bunch of hooligans and did stupid (but harmless) shit. This wasn't on the poll as an option, but I did also hear it referred to as Moving Night.

I get irrationally angry about stuff like this. There are only two “eves” as far as I know - new years (which really is its own holiday) and Christmas Eve, which is super duper.
Any other “eves” are just attempts by holiday whores to extend a holiday into multiple days. I think we all know at least one somebody who insists on having a birthday week. Puke.

Holloween is itself an Eve. Specifically, all halloows eve, as Nov 1 is all saints day. This is all a permutation of a catholic holiday.

As with many things, rituals persist long after the reasons why have been forgotten.

You must not go to Home Depot starting in October - January then. Think I saw Christmas trees up last time I went.

Growing up in NJ it was always Goosey Night for me. Didn't realize it went by other names till I hit college.

Don't put this on Jersey; grew up in Monmouth County and it was Mischief Night. Where is the Goosey from? Mischief because houses got TP'd.

Where would we be without Wiki?

"Mischief Night is an informal holiday on which children, teenagers and adults engage in jokes, pranks, vandalism, or parties. It is known by a variety of names including Devil's Night (particularly in Detroit), Gate Night, Goosey Night, Moving Night, Cabbage Night, Mystery Night and Mat Night.

....Modern practice in the United States

Mischief Night is generally recognized as a New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland and Delaware, phenomenon."
