Just caught bits of Ocean’s 11 and of all the times I’ve seen it, I’ve never been able to figure out the purpose of Bucky Buchanan from Satatoga - who recognizes Saul as they take the jewels to the vault, and his “security detail” pushes Bucky away...

What was the purpose of this character (played by Richard Reed) and his interaction with Saul? It’s always stood out as an odd scene to me.

I've always thought it was a coincidence that Bucky was there and recognized Saul which almost blew there cover. I don't think he was part of their plan.

I guess that’s it right? Just a kooky coincidence. It just bugs me that it almost feels setup to mean more. But I guess it’s not. :/

^^ This. Just a close call, and one that could have rattled Saul or blown the whole scam wide open. Theatrical drama, sir. :)

I guess what has always tilted me in this explanation (which I'm sure is correct) is that Bucky has terrible, almost cheesy, makeup. As if it was made to appear as a disguise or something. That's what always threw me about it... like - was it really another conman buddy that recognized Saul? or someone dressed up playing a part (which it feels like - and which would make no sense)?

I guess I just wish Bucky's makeup and attire wasn't so "phony" looking. It would've lent more credence to the "blowing the cover" bit. And the makeup alone is probably why it's the most WTF? scene in the movie for me. More so than the half-ton of stripper ads that magically appear out of nowhere. :P

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier) is the sidekick, and occasional nemesis of Captain America. He was interjected into the movie of a little sudden suspense, while giving an insiders "nod" to Captain America. The terrible makeup is a nod to the crappy eye-make-up "mask" of the Winter Soldier.

I always thought he was made to look like one of those people who spend too much time in the sun and have a horrible tan. After all, Saul liked the track and Bucky said he knew him from Saratoga.
