Hopefully this is in the right thread but wanted to air something out about Paulson chips. First off I’ve been playing since the poker boom in 03’ and have frequently been to my local casinos (Bicycle, Hustler, Commerce) and have always chased “casino” chips. Back then I bought a thousand A/K style chips without denom that were “clay” at 11.5g a chip and was the coolest in my hood with Tri-colors when everyone had dice chips; and never saw the need to purchase anymore chips.
Fast forward to 2020 and I’m still the poker nut in my circle that’s obsessed with poker and stumbled upon PCF and wanted to chase “casino” chips.
All that to say that I don’t understand the desire to own Paulsons, the idea of desiring “mint” chips. Mines are Lady Lucks mint and are stiff and clunky, they don’t feel like casino chips, are they supposed to see thousands of hours before they begin feeling like Casino chips? Why is it important to have a chip stand on its edge? Hustler Casino chips are Hat and Cane chips and don’t stand on edge I know they’ve seen years of daily play. I prefer chips not to stand so I can shuffle easier, I almost want to spend hours shuffling my LL’s to hurry up the process. Am I the only one? Lol also Bud Jones feel more casino-ish than my Paulsons. Even when I splash the pot it doesn’t sound Authentic. Is it nastalgia? What am I missing here, sorry for the novel. Thanks for your feedback

Different strokes for different folks... Thats totally cool you like well worn chips. Nothing wrong with that. For me, I just wanted a "real" casino chip. I didn't know what that was but I knew I held it each time I had been in Vegas. Then I found out the Paulson made the chips for 85% of casinos, and guess what? That was the real chip I knew by feel, but not by name.

Chips handle differently at different conditions. I like them best when they're clean and broken in. The best thing about mint chips is they're always clean :)

Yea I agree I’d prefer chips broken in and I’d only keep chips mint if I was considering reselling but I plan on using all my chips purchased and can’t see me keeping them in mint condition

I too have found that I like chips broken in, but also able to stand on edge. Best of both worlds, shuffle great, and look good in stacks and racks. Got a whole micro set of CA and WA chips I just put together, and of the almost ten sets I have put together, they are by far my favorites.

It's all about preference... And that is the beauty of this hobby! In the same way as I love the look, feel and smell of a brand new showroom car, I just love mint / near mint / excellent condition Paulsons. In that condition, they look incredible in stacks and racks — meaning having anything in lesser condition just tilts me!

That makes a lot of sense there. Good analogy

There are fully playable well used/loved sets that do come up in the Classifieds.
Bud Jones feels "casino-ish" because they are actually casino chips, just as much as any Paulson.
It is not necessarily important at all that a chip stands on edge - it's just a property that lets us estimate how worn a chip is likely to be.

I will say this about that. To me, condition matters a lot, with Paulson chips on the RHC mold. Mint RHC’s are great - they feel like nice, clay chips. But to me, casino worn RHC chips feel like plastic crap. I don’t know why. And to me, chips on the THC mold that are casino worn still feel like great clay Paulsons.

This was very noticeable with the Cleveland Horseshoe chips. These chips had three years of heavy casino wear on them. The $1s, on the THC mold, felt great. Loved them. But the $5s and the $25s, on the RHC mold just felt like plastic junk. I know it’s the same clay, so I can’t explain it.
They were my first Paulson Casino set, and after putting in play just a few times, I had to sell them.

This doesn't really apply to the Horseshoe RHC's, but if the inlay on the RHC covers over 90% of the face of the chip, it hardly matters to me that the compressed "clay" on the edges is Paulson buttery. And every RHC that has casino wear usually has a multitude of flea bites.

To OP, if you prefer worn Paulsons, you are going to pay a lot less for your chips than the people who want them to be mint. Instead of wearing down your Lady Luck's, just sell them and buy worn for (quite a bit) less!

Pics or it didn't happen. :)

in general, I really don't mind worn chips at all. I own chips to play with them and the truly mint ones, I kind of want to baby and stress about playing with. Doesn't stop me, but it's in the back of the mind...

That said......... mint chips sure are pretty :)

I prefer mint chips and like l to break them in over time as I use them. To each their own I suppose. I don’t mind casino worn chips so long as they aren’t too slick and fall over all the time

100 100 100 200, just need cleaning...

Christ, that set would tilt me no end, for a number of reasons.
Good thing you will probably never be at my game. Hopefully adding some yellow fives soon.

We can't all afford leaded textured Paulsons with perfect edgespot progression and perfect shaped inlay progression and blah blah blah.

The chips are amazing. The nitpicking is just for fun.

I'm a ball-busting asshole, which should come in somewhere around a B- or so. No rush.
