New to buying poker chips set (1 Viewer)

This is kinda like writing in to Car & Driver magazine and saying "i was wondering what a good car is and where to buy them any help or advice would be very much appreciated."

Sounds very much like a couple of other trolls surfacing in the [ast week or so...
I'm just looking for a good chip set or good chips under 1k Maby I was looking, and royal chips came up a lot. also, why would I troll? and waste everyone's time?

Ok so 1k is your budget. What sort of games do you want to play with your ~1k chip set? If you can give a # of players, number of tables, cash or tourney game or both played, # rebuys expected and the stakes you intent to play or style of tourney and starting stack sizes.

If ordering chips for the 1K budget level you can get a very nice Full Custom ceramic set either made in China or the USA.

Cash and Tournament so both

I said to myself earlier this year "I'll just join this group, and hopefully find and pick up a few more chips for my collection of Mapes display chips".

I've now dropped 4-figures (notice the plural "s") in less than a year. Have a set of ceramic tributes and recently purchased a large set of retired casino chips.

Did I mention this all started earlier this year? Should I also mention the year's not over yet?

Should also mention that if you have a 'better half', that you'll most likely have to spend on them what you spend on chips. So it's double draining on the wallet.

Here's what I suggest: before even thinking about chips or budget, define your game.

If cash, what are your blinds and initial buy-in? How many players/tables? How much do you think you'll have on the table on the biggest night, estimating for maximum degeneracy/reloads?

If tournament, what are your starting blinds and starting stacks? How many players/tables? What's the maximum number of rebuys/top ups that you'll likely get in one tourney?

Once you know these details, we can give you an optimum number of chips and breakdowns, so your budget (whatever it is) can stretch the farthest and get the best quality you can afford.

Many members wives regret they ever learned poker chips were available at home.

I an guilty for dipping over 15k in chips across several sets in a few years. My HSI set alone ate up more than half of that. You'll think your safe and clear, then someone will run a group buy with a dealer button or accessory that will work with one of your sets then Bingo! You end up buying more stuff. It is endless. PCF comes with a intermittent unpredictable "needs tax". Rumour is that the rate increases over time.

You kept track of what you spent?! NEVER keep track of the costs, just keep buying and ignore all previous expenses.

Ok then you need a bigger set "same theme" but different/alternative chips for cash/tourney.
120x25
150-200x1
200-300×5
60×25
20-40×100
550-700 cash chips
Will cover your .25/.25 to a bigger 1/2NL
Tournament (everyone will recommend seperate chips to avoid arguments and banking errors)
T25 (2 Table 5k, or 1 Table 10k
160x25
160x100
90x500
120x1000
40x5000
570 tourney chips

A set in this range is very doable with Chinese cards mold customs or also domestically with higher quality BRpro customs. Do you like ceramic chips? If looking at Paulsons you may want to increase your budget a bit for both

I have a google sheet page listing every chip in my inventory on a set by set/page basis with a cost/chip listed by each denomination. If I bought 1 rack at $1/chip and another at $1.50/chip then my cost per 200 chips is $1.25....
This way down the road if I ever sell anything I can see if I am selling +/- my cost per chip. I rarely sell things though as I am a terrible hoarder of things I like.
I can use the same spreadsheet to calculate chip counts for starting stacks, rebuys/addons and colour ups. These spread sheets are evil because they allow you to speculate and add a barrel here or there to allow for xyz expansion or more rebuys etc if you only had X more $500s or T25's for example.....

@Golden

When you said you have $1k to spend on chips, I assume you meant CAD. In USD, that’s around $730, right? And is your $1k going to cover GST/HST and duty if importing them from the US? I used to live in a border town in ON. If you do buy from the US, ship them to a shipping depot and smuggle them back across to CA. Great country btw.

I started back in my teens with real nickels and dimes. Then there were the cheap red/white/blue plastic Bicycle chips that were ribbed (and not for anyones’s pleasure). I finally purchased my first real set of chips last year and I love them. I currently have 1300 and am looking right now to add another 1200 of them. I am setting up for multiple cash game tables of 10 players with the initial buy-in + 5 rebuys for micro & low stakes and 3 rebuys for high stakes, all at 200bb. Each table can play different stakes.

Did I buy way too many? -Probably.
Do I care? -No. I like what I got. A lot!

But no joke. Invest in ordering samples. That’s part of the fun!! Good luck! Let everyone know what you settle on.

Keep your stick on the ice. We’re all pulling for ya!

sorry for the late reply 6 people for cash and 12 people for tournament and blinds would start at 10-15 and then increase every 15 mins or an hour. starting stack would be 5k or sometimes 25k

Hey bud ! Welcome. I’m new to this forum as well but have been playing for a while. A few years ago I bought claysmith “the mint” chips and they were decent only issue i had with them was the flashing on the edges needed to be cleaned up a bit. For a tournament my stacks are set as follows
8-$25
8-$100
6-$500
6- $1k
2-$5k

Pretty cheap for a half way decent set. Currently looking to upgrade them as we speak.

Cash set I purchased majestic card room chips off of Apachepokerchips.com 300ish buck for 200 .25 200 1$ and 200 5$ and that should have most of my games covered hope this helps !

Will do didn’t know about thanks

Honestly for the price I think they are great. Cleaned them up a bit with some mineral oil and got that white chalky stuff off and really made the colors pop. They stack almost perfectly, feel really good. I’m pleased with them
