Hello all,

Just started my poker chip journey and after watching many YouTube videos and reddit threads I learned that the idea of simply wanting to purchase a high quality poker chip set is much more complicated than expected. Who knew haha.

I would like to have a setup to be able to play with 1 table 6-10 players low stakes cash or tournament games (which I know most members say get 2 different sets). However I would like to be able to expand my set in the future to play with 2 tables for tournaments with more players. I expect to play with people that wouldn’t want games to take more than 3-4 hours.

I have learned that this forum is the best place by far to gain knowledge on the subject and I have started accumulating some samples to learn about the look, feel, sound etc. in person. Other than the sample attached that I ordered from Amazon, Apache, and some super cheap hand me downs, I have a sample set of Key West chips on the way. Very excited to see those as I think the design is great and all the rave reviews about CPC.

So far I know I like a standard diameter 39mm chip over the larder sizes. I like the ceramic base chips more than the plastic, plastic with metal slug or china clay. However I think the feel and sound of the Jumer’s real casino poker chips made by Paulson sound and feel far better than the rest.

I am the kind of person that wants to buy one time and keep it for a really long time so I am leaning towards trying to source a Paulson set or maybe a CPC set depending on how I like the Key West chips.

Other than the samples I have already picked up, if you do have any recommendations for samples I should try please do let me know!

Thanks.

Welcome. Great work getting samples, now continue reading and researching, especially if you want to invest in a paulson set. I hope you can find a set you have for a long time. I couldn't!

Shout out Fellow Floridian! I was in a similar situation for a while... now I strongly feel the only two options are either Tina or THC.

Welcome!

You have a nice array of sample chips there! Your collection should give you a great idea of what you'd like to eventually get. As you can see, there are some nice chips at a variety of price points.

Welcome to PCF! Do you have a budget in mind? As you’ve eluded to, the highest quality comes at a significantly higher price, but if you land on a set of Paulson’s, for example, there is still a HUGE price difference in say a RHC set and a Tiger Palace THC set. Hell, there’s a significant price range within the Tiger Palace family alone! You’ll also find full RHC sets readily available, while some other sets, like the aforementioned TP options are far harder to come by, which is one of several reasons they are more expensive. Just saying RHC makes some people’s hair stand on end. Personally, I love several RHC sets. And because they’re not as pricey, I don’t get nearly as much anxiety watching the guys shuffle the things at my games. But, these are all highly personal things to consider.

The upside of getting a high end set like Paulson is you can somewhat divorce yourself from the notion of needing to hang on to a specific set forever. If we play with my Detroit Jack set for six months (or six years) and I decide to sell it, chances are very good I’ll get most of my money I invested back out of the set, assuming my guys didn’t beat the piss out of them.

My advice would be to purchase something you like and know you can live with for a while and not put the “forever set” pressure on yourself. I don’t know anyone here who bought one set. Or two. Twenty two…sure. Plenty of those! You can buy a really nice Paulson cash set for your game now and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. All the while knowing your chips aren’t going to be worthless pieces of plastic if and when you do decide to move on from them.

Thank you for sending me the example of the 600pcs RHC horseshoe mixed set HSI/Cleveland/Cinci, that is definitely up my alley.

Getting a high quality set that retains a lot of its value sounds wisest to me. Like you said I don’t want to have a bunch of worthless plastic, unless I just really enjoy the design.
