So I’ve been lurking for awhile now and have learned more about chips here than I thought was even possible (thank you). I ended up on a forum binge for 6 hours last night until I got chewed out and told to come to bed lol. Didn’t sleep much, steam cleaned the carpets this morning and now I’m back.

Before I got chewed though I got deep into CrazyEddie’s Part 1/2/3 posts and next thing I know I’m in the vendor section trying to figure out how I can get quality sets. I ordered 3 sample sets from Apache (Majestic Star & Jack Cinci & El Rancho Vegas TR King), a sample set from CPC (Atlantic Amold) and a sample set from The Poker Store (classic ceramic 10g).

I’ve never had any kind of chips before besides Walmart cheap sets and ultimately I’ve decided I think I will hold out to put a good one together from the resources/sales/auctions on this site. I grew up playing NLH and watching it. Been out of the loop for many years since my grandfather died and life has just been getting busier and busier but now I’m ready to try and play the game live. Never played tourney or cash games before, only family/friend small stakes buy-in’s with normal rules. I’ve been on a casino kick with the fiancé here in Michigan lately and have killed it a few times in Black Jack and playing cards again got me searching for poker rooms. Been watching a ton of YouTube videos of popular players in Vegas as well as up and coming players like Brad Owen.

All-in-all you’ll definitely be seeing me around on the forums I’ve been sucked into the rabbit hole and my wallet is ready. I wish I could make the meet up this next weekend but unfortunately that’s too short of notice as it would be about a 5 hour drive lol. Any recommendations on getting chips in the meantime would appreciated, possibly the ones I’m getting samples of to hold me over till I piece together or find a complete set. I don’t mind the heavily used sets on Apache but it seems im late to try and get those last few that came out as some of the denoms are gone. I see everyone seems to be waiting on The Chip Room to come out with new stuff.

Welcome!!! China Clay or Ceramics are a nice intro to the chip world as a step up from dice chips. But once you get ahold of Paulsons or start down the CPC customization path you will never be the same. lol

Keep your eyes on the classifieds for some casino used Paulsons. Some deals out there for around $1 per chip.

Hello and welcome (to posting)!

You need more samples....
Lol so I’ve heard. I thought about one of those master sample packs but I like the individual ones to get me an idea of the look/feel of different sets. I think the real treat is going to be those TRK’s from El Rancho I got samples of. I’d love to find a 600-1000 set of TRK’s lol.

This hobby is going to be like firearms. Need to hide the receipts/purchases from the woman unless I bribe her . Nice amount of poker rooms on your side of the state, makes me jealous. Have you ever been to Firekeepers? I was thinking of getting my feet wet there. Throw me into the fire.

Yeah, I’m about 40 minutes from the Detroit casinos but I don’t play there, don’t like going downtown, too many sketchy people.

I haven’t played at Firekeepers yet, it’s about 1.5 hours from me. Been wanting to get out there though.

Welcome. This forum is very dangerous. Chips, table builds, man cave set ups. Very dangerous. LOL.

Welcome! I see you’re from Grand Rapids, MI.

Completely random but I was actually born in Michigan. My mother moved us to Texas just a few weeks after I was born.

I visited Grand Rapids in the Summer of 2012 to meet my biological father for the first time. I’m so sorry you have to live there full-time… hahaha

That was the last time I ever visited Grand Rapids. Between the absolutely deafening silence I heard while being outside (his home was basically in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by what appeared to be an endless number of very tall trees), and the very large black bear who casually walked through the front yard, I will stick to Texas!

Glad to have ya and GL in your chipping pursuits!

Lol I absolutely love it here. From very bottom to very top left of the Upper Peninsula it’s the longest drive out of any state in the U.S. from end to end. So much wilderness to see. I have a cabin in the U.P. Just about in the middle of nowhere but I have starlink there so I have internet. That being said I live way too close to GR (city life) to be considered country anymore. But if I had to choose any city in michigan to live next to it would be here. More jobs than anywhere else here and it’s craft beer city!!! Only thing that annoys me the most is they do this art-prize event in the city every year which attracts millions, literally millions, or out of towners and they basically shit the entire city down so people can walk around and look at stuff lol.

Chipping pursuit is already building up quite a savings plan, thanks

Yeah my fiancé is from Detroit, whole family is, she’s use to the hood/sketch lol I hate it. We’re planning to go to Firekeepers one of these weekends here soon. I’m on call for work (electrician) just about every other weekend so I don’t get to travel more than an hour away from my work facilities anymore that often. Too short handed. We have a poker room down the road from me but it’s only a few cash tables. There’s another one about 25 minutes from me as well that does tourneys 5 days a week but of course I’m third shift so I can’t ever do them lol

The A mold on the Atlantics probably have the roughest texture of all CPC molds. You can pickup a rounders CSQ sample set quickly to feel one of the smoother texture molds too.

For an endgame custom clay set, make sure to get samples of all CPC molds, or at least the ones that are visually appealing to you/work with you set's theme.

Thank you for the info ahead of time. Just ordered that sample set as well. I haven’t decided if my patience can handle the money/time I’m going to be spending trying to get an older cool set of Paulsons or TRK’s so I may just end up doing a custom set in the mean time.

Welcome to PCF,

TheChipRoom should be due a new sales soon, It been awhile since it last sale

The rabbit hole are real. just cant stop thinking about chipping during my free time
Holding out as long as I can I see there a some good ones being predicted that he’ll pick up. Got money just waiting lol.

Look out for classified too if you had the money to spend. I think you prob need 10 post to post at classified thou
I saw your link of the HSI cash set. Much appreciated but I’d like more of a tourney set if I could. I’d also do a hybrid set. Max number of players I’d have is 10. I just got my El Rancho TRK, Jack Cinci Paulsons, and Majestic Paulson samples in. Also got the Atlantic A Mold samples from CPC. I see what people mean by then being rough. These El Rancho TRK’s are by far the best IMO. Best shape too so not much of a fair comparison, they almost look unused, and best feel and sound. Love ‘em and I’d definitely spend the money to get a full set of TRK’s at this point. I’m addicted. Next set I’d pick would probably be the Jack’s but again it’s hard to compare, the majestic samples are pretty heavily worn. Some of the chips are half the thickness of the Jack and TRK’s. Each different set of sample chips has a different sound to them. The Atlantic A Molds could definitely be nice after some TLC having just come from the factory it looks like. Comparing prices however I can see why people won’t make the jump to TRK’s or Paulsons especially if they plan on heavy use out of the chips. If these El Rancho’s had more denoms and were in stock on Apache I’d probably purchase them in a heartbeat lol

Me too and I'd get them shipped to Australia. So sad I didn't know I wanted them until too late. Been on the forums for about 6 weeks agonising over obtaining my first treasured set. Very difficult from this country. Good luck to you on your own adventures!

Welcome to the forum.

Perhaps live and awesome Greektown 25¢ chips will lure you to downtown Detroit?!

Oh man. I will definitely have to one of these weekends. Have to find a baby sitter and wait for a weekend I’m not on-call for work. I’ve been wanting to get some experience at live poker. Lots to learn and have still never officially played at a table/poker room. Dabbled in some crazy 4 card and ultimate hold ‘em at little river last weekend to get the feel/confidence of being at a table lol. Those greektown chips look awesome. I’ll shoot you a PM when I know more details!

I’m local to Maryland so I had to pay $300+ a rack for these Detroit gems. Apparently, these are hard to harvest but it’s possible. Just search the forum.

Last month was my first time playing in a casino (MGM Grand in MD). It was much more welcoming and stress-free than expected. Plus I was able to harvest some minty chips. Good luck!
