Alright, I joined this forum to explore my options as I am trying to get a nice chip set for both cash games and tournaments (cash game set being the immediate need). At the time, I was almost completely sold on either a custom CPC set or the 500 piece Rounders set (I like this idea because I can add onto the set 100 chips at a time, plus I wouldn't have to wait 4-9 months). Now I see all of the used/like new casino chips for sale on this site and I am wondering if that might be a better option. All this site has done since I joined 24 hrs. ago is make me more confused and indecisive lol! I love it!

Also, I am noticing a HUGE difference in price between used casino chip collections. I am sure that there is a logical reason for this, but I am so new to this that I seem lost when I see some sets for $1000 and others for $8500. I'll stick around for a while and see if I can learn the difference! Thanks!

Welcome to the site. A lot of things that factor into the price of casino chips, amongst them (in no particular order):

  • Desirability of the chips. Some chips just have more Curb Appeal, although as you will find opinions can vary greatly
  • Condition of chips. Are they Mint? (lots of casinos have secondary chips, some of which never get into play) Are they bicycle tires?
  • Rarity of chips.
  • Historic value of chips. This can probably fit under desirability, but a lot of collectors have sentimental value on certain chips sets. Old Nevada casinos, for instance, may hold more historic value than other smaller casinos that only a handful of people may have played at.
  • Type of chip? Are these Paulsons? TRKs? Ceramics?
I'm sure there are other factors that I am not even considering, but as you will discover there are chips around in every budget.

Happy Hunting!

And CPC samples too. They aren’t for everyone
Try to get different mold samples too, not just the A-mold. The different molds have vastly different feels.

Also just know that CPC isn't going to be a cost savings over used casino chips. You can get used casino chips around the $1/chip mark, but CPCs are likely going to set you back $2+/chip for stick designs like the rounders, or $3+/chip for customs even if you use basic spot patterns. Don't pick CPC as a compromise, only pick them if you like the product they have.

Welcome!

Does customization/personalization matter to you? If so go CPC. Otherwise go used CPC Rounders or a casino set. As long as you take your time and pay market prices you shouldn’t loose any money and can always resell if you change course.

Personally, I came here trying to figure out customization and side tracked into casino and Paulson sets but wound up back at custom CPCs once I had everything figured out.

Hi, Welcome to PCF

Many good advises are given here. Although CPC and Paulson chip are both Clay Chips, I find them vastly different enough to classify them as two different type of Chips

It will be good to try get samples of both before committing the big purchase, it took me about 6 months to research and reading before committing my first big purchase.

In additional, there are also other good non-Clay option too which I will had never considered when I first joined PCF but it had changed since then. I had learn to appreciate all type of chips.

Fast forward today, I got a number of sets from various different type of chips because I realise I am those type of collector that do collect such thing

You will realise what you like & dislike as you dig deep further into the hobby

Good luck

If your ultimate set is going to be personalized custom clay chips, CPC is your only option. Take your time to design them the best you can, and in the interim you can always get a casino Paulson or CPC stock set that you can sell later.

As others have said, samples are important! From a CPC perspective, molds feel very different as mentioned above, and the colors on the chip design tool vary depending on your monitor so get color samples too.

They all break in differently too, so if you're able to borrow used CPCs (or Paulsons for that matter) from other members, I'd recommend that too...hopefully your set gets well used and doesn't stay minty forever

CPC is all about the mold and in my opinion, the only reason somebody should choose CPCs is if there’s a mold they really like. Otherwise it’s just cheaper and easier to go with Paulsons - there are plenty available in the $1-3 range. Problem is, Paulson realistically only has 2 molds and one of them sucks. CPC has 17 molds.
