Hi all. Figured this was as good a place as any to start. Been lurking here for a few months looking to figure out my first set better than dice stripes--I'm a young broke guy with a wife who isn't exactly thrilled about the prospect of spending $200 on a set, so I've been waiting for that Goldilocks find, haha. No Paulsons for a while at least.

Mostly interested in chips for board gaming (18xx and the like--I'm not quite as picky about my chips as some other members of that crowd though), though I also love a game of hold 'em now and then. All advice is appreciated.

Welcome! Suggestions: know your stakes (now and possibly for the future, so one set can serve you for years), and approx how many chips you want. That, along with budget, will help narrow things down for you. Good luck! PCF = kissing your free time (and free money) bye bye. Not to scare you. Just prepping you.

Friends of mine have historically preferred tournament-style over cash-style games, so not sure exactly where my stakes should land. I know basically the exact distribution I want for board gaming: 75 1s, 50 5s, 75 20s (or 25s if I can't find 20s), 50 100s, 25 500s, 25 1000s. I don't mind undenominated chips in general, though it does seem like most quality chips are denominated. I feel comfortable buying a set that's not exactly optimal for poker since I really don't play more than once or twice a year--killing two birds with one stone would be nice, but would rather make sure I'm getting exactly what I want for the stuff I'm doing 2-3 times a month.

Hoping to spend <$100 on a set--would be nice to spend about $70-$80 on something, though it seems like it's kind of hard to find stuff that's above Target quality in that range. (Claysmith Mints and the Outlaw chips on DiscountPokerShop seem like decent bets to find somewhere in that range, though I'm trying to look at a sample of each first.) Figure Black Friday is a good time to start looking. Not in a huge rush, I can survive with the Target chips for the time being, but would like to get something more reliable.

Another board gamer! Hell ya! I have a set of Outlaws. I'm not going to act like they are the greatest thing ever, but they are the greatest at their price point. Holy shit did I ever get samples too. Nothing beats them at their price point. They are far better than the other big ABS chips like Monte Carlo and Casino Royale. I have samples of basically every ABS chip I could find. Let me know if you need any reviews. Outlaw are the #1 ABS though (and Spartan which is essentially the same chip).

If you're looking for 18xx chips, Apache has a China Clay set specifically for those games, The Bank chips. They even have a railroad mold:

At 55c apiece, it would be pushing your budget for a 300-chip set, but you could always get some now and add more later as your wife's attitude toward chips softens. :ROFLMAO:
