My friends are being jerks because I spent a lot of money on a new set. Advice? (1 Viewer)

Once a legal settlement I’m waiting for rolls in, I’m finally scoring my custom CPC set.

My Justification, to myself and others: I want to own one, just one truly beautiful piece of art, one heirloom to pass to my kids and grandkids, during my lifetime. Hence I dropped four figures on a set of poker chips.

Get some cheap interlocking plastic chips in red, white, and blue only. Use coins for the missing denominations. Then host games with those for a while. Tell them cheap is better. Use old blackjack cards that have clipped corners and have been drilled. Don't use a dealer button because “the dealer knows who he is”. Host only on Formica tops, and encourage drinks on the table.

Just kidding, just enjoy your chips and they will come around.
This is the solution. You dont even have to go that far down the chipping food chain.

My game stopped making comments about wasting money on expensive chips as soon as I took them away. THEN they decided it was worthwhile (maybe not to the full amount I spend, but at least acknowledging that there is a big difference between garbage and nice chips).

It gets even better when you drop 4 figures on a rack!! I mean Brie sold her truck to buy one rack of chips! Lol

It's one thing with 18 year olds but I am a grown ass man... come in my pad and bitch to me about how I spend my money and see how that goes! That will be shut down immediately! I paid more for my 2 50 cal Beowulfs bro... you wanna see how loud they bark?? Lol

I didn't even get CPC's. I got Sunfly Hybrids. (Link in sig :).) A number of players do enjoy them, and when asked how much I spent I just let them know, "we are in the 'some people buy paintings' conversation. My wife and I decided to design our own art."

Don’t let it get to you, OP. It is a little crazy to drop as much money as most of us do on chips. But like you said, it’s your money and if you can afford it, there’s no problem.

I also agree with the “get your new chips in play, then switch them mid-game for dice chips” approach.

I don't bother talking about my chips with my crew anymore. sure, they love the chips, but they really don't appreciate them
Yeah I mean it is a bit rude to discuss alcohol with an alcoholic :)

Lol. I actually dont mind it at all. I buy the chips so that I can enjoy them and then love when fellow chippers who play in my game can enjoy them (aka @Jeevansluck).

I think most of my regulars have started to appreciate the chips - wait until you have multiple sets and switch them up every game.

I actually sat through a new player telling me how he just picked up a primo set from Costco that is a bit nicer than the Paulson chips we were playing with (but my chips were nice too).

There was a time when I would have considered grabbing a barrel of those dice chips and shoving them in his nostril, but I may have matured since then.

That’s actually a good idea. Have him bring those dice chips to a game. See who can make a higher stack with their chips.

If ever there was a time to respond with "cool story bro," that is it.

At the end of the day, while I hope players appreciate nice chips, table, food offering, etc, I don’t really give a rat’s behind if they don’t.

Splash the pot with my mint THCs though, and then we’ll have words. :ninja:

Tell them to shut up and just enjoy the game. Everyone collects something, jewelry, tools, cars, you name it, enjoy your collection!

I don't tell anyone (I'm not married to) how much the chips I own are worth or how much I paid. One of my good buddies asked and I told him and got some raised eyebrows but he plays in Casino's a lot, so he appreciates what it brings to a game.

Oh, I do the opposite, I dont tell anyone I'm married to how much I paid for chips until months/years later "dont you remember, we talked about it, plus they are worth more than I paid for them now".

with 2 rotating decks in play, the button is still quite useful.
Hmm. Maybe a fair point. I never used a second deck at my games, but that’s the plan for whenever we start back up again. So now I need to buy buttons?

I am excited for you! Those DDLMs are disgustingly fun and gorgeous colors. The truth is that for most of us, our players dont appreciate the chips we buy as much as we do.
Yup. I spent a bunch of money years ago on Paulson Pharoahs and was so excited to try them out for the first time. The players were all like "what are these cheap feeling chips, I don't like them.."

Ugh.
