I’ve been trying my hand at milling lately which has brought me to my next task. Murdering a rack of HS Gardena $25’s

I’ve been looking at threads on the subject and noticed that after the inlays have been totally removed there seems to be a lot of gouges left. Does this ever show thru the label after it’s applied?

I gouged the crap out of my old roulettes but only the deepest are perceptible through the label. If you're murdering you might as well get the thicker laminated labels anyways. Still be careful and try to limit the scratches but I definitely was not delicate, and only have 2 out of 200 that I can still feel.

Should be mostly unnoticeable depending on the labels you use. That said, if you take your time with good technique then you can mostly avoid that all together

That brings up another point. Curious why Gear doesn’t recommend the extra thick labels for milled chips? Seems like it would be a good option. Seems they recommend them for Bud Jones relabels?

My experience is that a good part of the ugly uneven surface is a mixture of leftover NANPR and glue residue (that has resolidified). Try soaking in warm water w/ dish soap and then scrubbing it with a toothbrush to clean up the surface a bit.

But to answer your question, a really bumpy surface will show up with a regular Gear laminated label at the right lighting and angle, but most people won't notice. It won't show with a thick laminate label, but I've been told not to use those on Paulson chips (for fear of spinners?).

So if it's still bumpy, try smoothing it out with some sandpaper or some light chiseling.

If the chip is worn, the recess might not be deep enough to accept the thicker label.

(Just a guess as I've only over-labeled new chips at this point)

I’m curious why the need for all the gouging? Are these paper inlays?
On the vinyl inlays I’ve done, once you make that initial cut and can grab the laminate, it will peel off, leaving some vinyl behind. Soaking the recess for 30 seconds with nail polish remover makes it easy to remove, with no gouging necessary.

Yes, always. Only use thin labels for overlabeling but don’t overlabel anything anymore as I don’t like how it feels when shuffling chips.

I used the thin matte gear labels on murdered Paris $1s and they were great.

I’m not a huge fan of over labeling. I did build a large set all over labelled and it really changed the feel of the chips, especially when shuffling. Could just be in my head but the sound changed too.

I’m curious why the thick laminated labels weren’t even an option when I was speaking with Gear about my milled solids. I wouldn’t question Chris or Andrea since they clearly know their stuff but in hindsight I should have ordered some to test.

There is a bit of an art to it, take your time and watch your cutting depth. You only need to get through the laminate, not cut into the label or chip. Some people just slash away because it is faster…lol. If you have not seen it, this thread has all the information you need to do it right with minimal damage:

I left a little behind, just practiced on some royal sample chips that I have and the sticker came right off, anyone got could tips on removing the residue? Is non acetone nail polish good?

It depends on the labels you use. On my first relabel project, I used textured laminated. I couldn't see a single imperfection on any of them.

I ordered smooth glossy on my second relabel project and I could see some of the imperfections, which bummed me out to the point that I am going to replace the labels with textured Laminated labels.

The Royal labels peel off if you can get under the sticker with an exacto knife and can limit the markings

You will see deep grooves with smooth laminate.
Textured laminate will cover well!

My Jerry‘s Nuggets had canyons - and they‘re well covered with textured laminate.

Honestly i don‘t know how some people remove labels… it‘s 0,3mm of plastic to cut!!
Why you press like it‘s 1mm steel??!

Anyone have advice for removing paper labels? These have been a PIA compared to the vinyl labels RHCs I tried before. Not really getting the pop from the non acetone nail polish remover. Any other helpful tips?
