Most underrated chips and why? (2 Viewers)

Very cool!! I tried to track down the designer, Elijah Muse, to see if he was interested in designing me a set. But apparently he moved overseas.
Yeah, I was a noob at the time and couldn't even purchase a set, but was giving my thoughts and some design input... some shot down, a couple of suggestions implemented.
Not implying that I designed the inlay, just helped tweak it a bit to make it look better
My first clay set was an ASM Group Buy on CT - no inlays.. somewhere around 30-35 cents a chip (which was really stretching my budget at the time).

Easy answer...BCC SAMURAI PALACE!!

Hard for me to say what the current price is because complete sets infrequently sell. But I would guess $1.50 per chip or less is what a complete set would go for. This is barely above the $1.35 price they originally sold for.

Why do I think they are worth more?

1. The art work is BEAUTIFUL!!

2. I love the dark label on one side and white label on the other.

3. Edge spot progression is fantastic!!

4. They stack like bricks. MUCH better than any Paulson or TRK. Don't believe me? I challenge anybody to stack Paulsons or TRKs more than 400 chips high (see pic below).

I think BCC quality control was highly suspect during the time these came out, that chippers were nervous. So these never really got the love they deserve. But they are DEFINITELY one of my favorites!!

I picked up a sample set but never bought a set. I will forever regret not buying these chips. I still handle the sample set from time to time.

In my opinion, the PGI 8V's that @ABC Gifts and Awards blew out a year ago are underrated. Sure they have their issues, like barrel height and fading, but they stack and handle great, and were an absolute bargain! My only regret is that I didn't make a decision right away, and I missed out on the reds.

These "Las Vegas 16 Stripe" chips. I believe they are out of production, but I picked up a sample set years ago.
--They cost around $0.05 each
--They stack nice - better than Nexgen 8000/8002 chips but not as well as faux clays
--Their sound is a laid back "clack" a bit like a casino Bud Jones
--They even had a "label your own" variety

A nice, cheap chip, I almost bought a set of these for a tourney game that never materialized. I used to sometimes call them " Faux Bud Jones".

Las Vegas Pro 9g. Didn't get called "16-stripe" until later versions using different labels (and a much more plasticized material). Around 14c initially, but were sold at 4c-5c close-out prices after production stopped and inventories started drying up.

I have around 3,000 of 'em. They also made a large-label version, which was not nearly as nice.

I'll go +1 on the Jackpot Casinos - I have a couple hundred quarters and a handful of other denoms I used with my college buddies for super low stakes.

They preferred them to the Paulson's, mostly because I didn't give them a speech before the game about being gentle with the chips. These things are built like tanks, have essentially no injection markings, stack like bricks, and were very inexpensive. That is when they were made, I have not been able to find them in some time.

got some of these to try out. they are very slippery and taller than other chips. shipping cost more than the chips did. but only a couple colors remain.

Bumping this old thread because I was going to start one of my own. I hardly ever hear anything about the GPI Elites. They were known as Gemaco no molds or something like that, and only remember seeing 4 sets made using this line. There was one custom set, the PCF set, the Monaco's and these Elites. I think the Elite's are the best of the bunch and are incredibly underrated.

This is the only pic I have of my set. It's a crappy pic with crappy lighting because they are in my chip cabinet.

No idea what their 'market value' is these days, but from what I have seen and as close to premium chips as they are they are shockingly cheap.

They remind me a bit of Protégés but with giant inlays.

So these never really got the love they deserve.
They seem to have a pretty strong cult following here. I’d love to try the T molds and I’m a big fan of BCC, but the black and white artwork just isn’t my thing.

ah the days when there was no debate about what a Group Buy actually was... ;)
oh brother, welcome to 2024. Now there are no debates; the term is meaningless!

Anyway, my entry would be the 43mm Tina Greek key hybrids. They’re just a really really nice feeling chip at a price that’s tough to beat.
Funny think is, if I replied to this thread when it was posted, I probably would have said the Sunfly 43mm hybrids. And they’re still great chips. But the Tinas are better and cheaper.

I think these chips would have caught on eventually, but they were available for so short a time that there probably weren't that many sets purchased and they didn't make their way around. I played with them and didn't have a bad thing to say about them.

Totally agree. To be able to get semi-custom true compression clay chips with custom inlays for around $1 each -- even with oversize inlays on the lammer mold using a limited number of base colors with white spots only -- was a really fantastic deal.

Had they been available longer, I think more people would have eventually gravitated in that direction. May have even generated large enough interest and order numbers to convince GPI to increase the color and spot options.

Alas, we shall never know. Coulda woulda shoulda, as one of my social worker friends used to say.

I quickly bought a 600 piece custom set of the GPI chips. My design is basically non existent, just words. But I do like the chips and am glad I did it when I could. I’m not sure any other individual actually bought a custom set of these, maybe that’s why they discontinued them.

I have a fairly large set of these now. All denoms but I’d like more of the lower denoms 5’s 1’s and quarters cause it’s such a versatile high quality set. Very happy to have accumulated them. The large inlays and numbers remind me of old hustler streams from the early days of HCL.
