Hi, I have a friend who is looking to get a cash game 500 chip set. I understand there are other threads like this but I haven't seen one that is aimed at a set for 500 only and with the weird ass denoms we use.

Furthermore to complicate things, he usually plays 10p/10p blinds! Would that remove the need for a 5p and 25p chip? Meaning denoms of 10p/50p/1/5? (this may sound weird but I've played in 10p/10p games in my university days with these exact denoms and it works) If he moves up the stakes he would simply just make it 10p/20p.

So for this specific weird denom, my proposed breakdown for a 500 set is:
10p x 100
50p x 100
1 x 200
5 x 100

Starting stacks for a full ring table (at 200bb for 10p/10p):
10p x 10
50p x 10
1 x 14
= 20 total

Now I understand the normal denoms for microstakes uses 5p/25p/1/5 and so on, so in that sense, my proposed breakdown for a 500 set is:
5p x 100
25p x 100
1 x 200
5 x 100

Meaning starting stacks of:
5p x 20
25p x 20
1 x 14
= 20 total

That's all I have to say, please do let me know what you guys think of this unorthodox denom of 10p/50p/1/5. It just seems like the more straightforward option in my head. And do give feedback or thoughts on the chip breakdown and starting stack amount. I had a look on apache chips (majestics) for him that would seem like the most likely option, but if the weird denom thing seems to be in favour amongst you, I might shoot for relabelling.

This will work for 0.1/0.1 game but i just felt it a waste to have 0.50 & $1 chip in the same set.

I will think 10c / 50c / $2 / $10 will work better as the demo but as you mentioned it will be not the normal suggest demo that most PCF used for their micro set

Chip Breakdown i will suggest 100/200/140/60 this way you will have $990 bankroll which will be more than 4 buy in per person for a full ring table.

For a 200B starting stake just give 10c/50c/$2 20/20/4 to the 1st 5 person and 50c/$2 20/5 after that ; $2 & $10 will be for rebuyin only

I've created this set specifically for 10ct/10ct with an option to grow to 10ct/20ct.
Yes you sacrifice efficiency with the 50ct and $1 being so close together, but it's way more efficient than introducing a 5ct chip that will only be used as a sb in 5ct/10ct and be completely useless as soon as the game moves up in stakes.
And if you skip the 5ct and do the standard 25ct frac only, you've more than doubled the stakes your players are used to. This could end badly.

You can still efficiently use that 10ct chip at 10ct/20ct, 20ct/40ct, 20ct/50ct.

So if you want standard denoms like $1, $5, and not go for $2, $10, I think the 10ct, 50ct, $1, $5 is the most efficient way to go for the stakes you play.

Thanks for the reply guys, glad to know I'm not crazy for using this unorthodox chip denom lineup.

Cool I love that set. In terms of set breakdown, I see you got:
0.1 x 100
0.5 x 200
1 x 200
5 x 60
20 x 40

So if I were to adjust these amounts for a 500 chip case total, should I go for a similar one? I'm thinking:
0.1 x 100
0.5 x 100
1 x 150
5 x 125
25 x 25

And how does your chip breakdown affect the starting stack for everyone? Does everyone get the same amount of each chip?
Thanks!

(With apologies for the observation / rant that isn't really helpful)
This is the perfect opportunity to use snappers. Those $2.50 chips that every casino has, that every collector loves, that seem to have no useful use on a poker table?
.10 / .50 / 2.50 / $10 (or $5 or whatever - it's your big chip and hardly matters)

If I could've chosen the exact amount of 50ct and $1, I would've gotten another rack of 50ct, but these were (and still are) in short supply when I purchased my chips.

For a 500 chip set for a 0.1/0.1 or 0.1/0.2 game with these denoms, I'd go for:

0.1 x 100
0.5 x 200
1 x 125
5 x 50
25 x 25

That is assuming you can only buy the chips in portions of 25. Otherwise I'd go for:
0.1 x 100
0.5 x 200
1 x 120
5 x 60
25 x 20

A possible breakdown for a $20 buyin on a 10 handed (or less) game would be
0.1 x 10
0.5 x 20
1 x 9
Example:

or

0.1 x 10
0.5 x 20
1 x 4
5 x 1

39 or 35 chips in a starting stack should be enough to make everyone feel "rich" and promote action.

This is sort of the reason I did these denoms in my custom set. Most of the games I play will have a 0.50 BB or more, but I do have micro games with some of my family and just doing dimes instead of nickels and quarters for downward flexibility made sense to me.

So for this specific weird denom, my proposed breakdown for a 500 set is:
10p x 100
50p x 100
1 x 200
5 x 100

If anything, this may be too many 50p chips. Yes, the upside of the 50p to single 2x "inefficency" is that you can get away with very few of the 50p chips. I have a rack to accommodate two tables. (Comes to 5-6 chips per player, which has been plenty in practice.) I do think you still want 100 of the 10p as well, but I think you can safely shift to 100/50/250/100 or 100/60/240/100 of 10p/50p/1/5 for your stakes either 10p-10p or 10p-20p.

Just an added thought, but I do have this sort of breakdown in practice and it works pretty well.

Since the 50c and the $1 are so close together you can pretty much pick the chip you like better and get more of those as your workhorse chips.
In a 10p/10p game, the $1 might be a little too big, to use as your workhorse chip. For a 10p/20p it's actually perfect.
