Hello,

I'm new here and obviously have a problem as seen by attached photo. It seems that in search of the "perfect" set of chips, I have acquired what feels like too many sample sets. I rationalize that the samples are much less expensive than buying full sets and I get the fun of seeing something new. The problem is that I have champagne tastes on a tap water budget (yes, I know the saying is beer budget but I can't even afford the beer--thus tap water).

I have been lurking for a while on the forum and finally decided to make an account since I have seen some beautiful chips for sale in the classifieds.

I am currently using the chips to play blackjack with my kids. It is a fun way to spend time together and make them do math. I have never played a single hand of poker but still feel like I need to complete a set of chips to play for cash (not that I'm planning it).

I can already say "thank you" to the people that I've learned from in my time lurking.

Welcome! I picked up a blackjack table a few weeks ago. We've really enjoyed playing with the kids and friends.

Looking for "perfect" set

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHahahahahahahah.......... But in all seriousness, Perfect set, this is only in your eyes. I thought my perfect set was the Empress casino chips, then I saw the Isthmus chips, but then, well after a while I ended up get all of those then selling those and getting a full custom CPC set (see ling "note from the music shack" below).

Welcome to the forum, good that you have sample sets, I had the Pharaohs chips and loved them, out of all the samples you have those to me are the best, in this category.

Have fun.

Yeah, I use the word "perfect" loosely. I know I will end up with a "perfect" set for a cash game. Then a "perfect" set for something else. Then I will need another "perfect" set of some other kind. I need to order a sample set of CPC just to see what they are all about. The problem is that I've ordered all the current samples in the span of about two weeks. My wife keeps looking at me funny with all of the small packages that keep showing up. The kids love it though.

Welcome to PCF! I'm sure you can find a set you like on here. Have you considered playing poker online with play money, just to get your feet wet?

Go to @ABC Gifts and Awards link in the vendor section. Look for the PGI8V sale thread. These are some of the best quality China Clay chips for 10 cents each. 480 chips (160 each of Purple, White, and Brown) will cost around $50. Can be customized with your own printable stickers. Makes a tournament set (or cash set) as needed.

As you have a budget for chips (I forgot what that was a month after joining) most Paulson/BCC/ASM/CPC sets will be out of your price range. What's left is in general what you have in your OP picture - ceramics, China Clays, composite chips, hybrids etc. Since you already have most/all of what's going to fit your criteria, I'd pick out your favorite 2 or 3 types of chips (ceramic/china clay/etc) and get a "shuffle stack" which consist of 10-20 of those chips. Any less and you won't get the real feel of the chips (impossible to do with just 1 or 2).

After you toss the chips around, shuffle them, play with them in a stack, then figure out what specific chip set you want. Generally this means - out of the predesigned chips (Monaco/Elites/Tiki Ceramics etc) - what set of chips do you like the look of best (since they're all the same type of chip it's just a cosmetic decision now). Last, search prices or ask people on here where to get the best deals for those chips are. It may be to just sit and wait for them to appear in the classified, might be LetGo or Facebook Marketplace if it's a more common set, or it maybe one of the many vendors here such as @ABC Gifts and Awards, @Apache, or others.

GLWS!

If you really like any of your current samples, just wait until your wallet screams after you get your hands on some really nice chips. Sometimes some samples are better off not being had.....

Welcome!

No...it can get worse.

The thin one is ASM/CPC/BCC/Paulson. The thicker one is ceramic / china clay. If I ever get enough samples of TRK to shuffle, I may be doomed.

Welcome!

I am also a victim of this site. I came in here looking for a sub $200 set that I would love. A month later I walked away with a $1000 upsell hahaha!

Just out of curiosity, is that your set of CPC/ASM chips listed on eBay? Given the similar user name and location...

I feel you on the looking for one thing and ending up with a much higher priced/quality set. I have been fighting the good fight and so far have acquired only a ceramic set and the beginnings of a semi-custom set. I keep looking at the classified section and talking myself out of buying things. As it is, my wife and kids think I have too many chips already with what I have (which isn't enough).

Yes, Sir. That's me. I've been on this site for a few months, but I hadn't met the minimum post requirement so I just put them up on eBay.

My girlfriend says the same thing to me also. She's wondering why I keep browsing and buying chips even though I haven't played a home game in months haha.

This is not the first time I've seen these words " I have never played a single hand of poker but still feel like I need to complete a set of chips to play for cash" Could you pleaaaaaase relax my mind how you ended up in this forum? Did you go to Google and type in chips looking for the newest Lays flavor and get a bright sexy Paulson THC pop up in search? Then just couldn't not click on the rabbit hole???

I blame @Hobbyphilic for my arrival to this forum. Short story is that I started playing blackjack with my kids to make them practice addition and because I enjoy the game. I wanted some chips to make that game more fun for all of us. As a child I played with the cheap plastic ridge/wavy chips and hated them. I did not want to waste money on those things so I google'd something along the lines of "best poker chips". That search led me to the the Hobbyphilic youtube channel where I watched pretty much every chip review he had done. I ordered a bunch of samples. I nitpicked all of the samples. I thought I would come to this forum to see what people here were saying/get advice for quantity of chips/etc.

I'm not even a full month into the forum at the time of writing this post and I have already purchased a ceramic set (too good of a deal to pass up, figured it would be something to play with while figuring out what I like/don't like/want to afford) and some of the 8V compression clay blanks that were from the ABC blowout sale. I've mentally created some design elements and a theme for those blanks so now need to make time to fill in the gaps for colors/quantities, make time to learn Illustrator to create the labels, and then get them printed.

So, yeah, I am going down the rabbit hole. Its a personality flaw--if I'm going to do something, I want to go all in and usually do it overboard. Once I have CPC samples in hand, I can figure out if I think those are worth the money for later down the road. Then I need to handle some Paulsons. And then handle even more. Its seems that I've put one expensive hobby on hold for another expensive hobby.

I was eyeing the chips on eBay and trying to rationalize the money as it is a lovely set. But, 1) I don't think I need that many chips (as I continue to look at the classified section for more chips), 2) I'm a broke grad student, and 3) I still haven't handled CPC chips yet. I want to at least handle some of them before committing a lot of resources towards a set. I was hoping that putting your set under the "other section" would have driven some interest towards them. I need someone else to buy them so I don't.

Interesting to say the least! Welcome aboard.
