So I'm looking at buying my first set from Apache. I've done some research and looked around quite a bit at different chip sets but really like the Royals. These would just be for cash poker at home. I've read a lot of people saying they strictly use these for tournament due to the size, but these would be my only and primary chip set.

I love the colors and will be designing my own gear inlays since I have the capability of making something for myself that I'm happy with being a graphic designer.

Are 43mm chips not typically used as a main set? Just looking for some guidance and doing some more research before I pull the trigger on a 500/600 chip set.

Thank you!

Im far from an expert of what people use, but i would think 43mm is not typically used as a main set. I myself just ordered some chips (not from apache), and while it has some 43mm chips in the set, it is for the higher denoms. I myself prefer 39/40mm size for chips and i suspect most may feel the same way, but in the end they are your chips so really you should pick what you like.

Chips are chips! Lol

What "rules" are there about building chip sets? I don't know of any? If you can use 43mm's for a tourney set, then why couldn't you use them for cash? Also they make 43mm Royals in cash denoms.

@FordPickup92 and I own a tourney set that are 36mm... is that allowed? I mean a casino had them made.

I sure hope no one is going to kick us out of the hobby for using a different sized chip??

Kidding man, but don't just go off colors, buy a sample set and check out the feel, weight, shuffability (yup just made that word up) if they "feel" right for you and you like the chips buy a set! For the record, the Riyals are the nicest China Clay's I have ever handled, I was very surprised in their feel and weight!

My only concern would be dexterity, there have been many posts over the years about the durability of some China Clay's. These have only been on the market for abou a year and a half now. I have heard of some Milanos and others that start to crumble over time. I would suspect that with regular oiling that this wouldn't be any issue, but again something to consider when talking about your one and only "go to" set.

Again Absolutely nothing wrong with oversized chips, many people including @sheikh617 have made all 43mm cash sets. You will be absolutely fin it that's the chips you choose!

Good luck with the "one and only" part... chipping is extremely addicting. If you buy that set and start thinking "well this is perfect, but man one more for xxx (micro, limit, tourney, monopoly) whatever the case may be, then proceed with caution! You might be catching the chipping bug and not even realize it!

Best of luck with the decision, hope you find your perfect chip and can get back out before it's too late!! Lol

There's no rule about using 39mm chips instead of 43mm for your primary set. It's just rare to see 43mm sets compared to 39mm. Usually 43mm is for higher denoms in micro cash sets (like a $20 or $100) or for the higher denom in a tournament set (1000/5000/25000).

The only rule we usually have (and it's more of a concern) is to not use the same chips for cash as you do for tournament. If a 25 goes missing from your tournament set and ends up in your cash game, that's a security issue.

So you think it's ok if we play our 36mm chips for a tournament game? I would hate to have to sell them without ever felting them...

..........

43mm chip sets can be used for cash or tournament. I know there's quite a few folks on here who use these for both. As recommended, do not use the same exact chips for cash and tournament as they can be intermingled and affect the bank. Be sure yourself and your players like the feel of the larger chips, order samples before buying a full set. Maybe @BGinGA or somebody of that nature can explain to us how larger chips originated for higher denominations, but it is not frowned upon to use 43mm chips for all denominations if that's what you like.
FWIW my assumption for the main reason Paulson clay 43mm chips are not commonly used as "cash chips" in the home game environment (and likely casinos) is they cost more. They're more expensive to make, and much much more expensive to buy second hand.

43mm can be used for either. Some people like them for tourneys, or for larger denom chips in cash sets. But plenty have done 43mm all the way.

Ex graphic designer here. It's fun to do, I recommend finding someone's designs you dig on the site and using a one or two person sounding board tho. Just to open ideas. Using @Saoliver during my design phase made the set better just by us chatting and playing.

I do recommend before any purchase to buy samples. And alot of them. You'll find that once you feel sets between your fingers, the view on them can change drastically. Sets you loved look horrid and chips you never thought you'd dig will be favorites.

Going China Clay is always cost effective, but the resale on them ever is nil. And yes, this COULD be your only set. But if we took a poll of visitors stopping by for there only set and ended up upgrading and going on a "chipping journey", you'd find we all said the same thing.

If you buy used clay (like the sale going on in the chip room, a vendor here who sells and gives great deals), you'd be in at a good discount and they would hold a good value down the road.

Also, if you want custom, you can jump over to the cards mold group buy and make full custom china clays that I find fantastic for .30 something per.

Be well, and enjoy the ride.

Im far from an expert of what people use
@Ben8257 and I are experts. And we both have many many updoots over useless crap. And have pretty beards. So, I'd say we hold some sway.

I couldn't possibly be more proud of you Mr. Kifer... your first ever "Ben book!" That has to be the longest post I have ever seen from you and very well thought out brother. Far from a pro here, and the Beard was beautiful... growing back as we speak. But doesn't take a pro to say... if you like certain chips use them! If you want to build and all plaque set... use it (who the hell would actually do that though)

Oh wait... ME! Lol

Bottle caps, peanuts, belly button lint (eww not recommended) we are talking home games here folks, not a professional establishment. Use what you like and have fun doing so!

I have said it 1000 times, I grew up dirt poor with a set of interlocking Bicycle chips from a yard sale, the whole set cost $2... and I would give away my entire collection for just one night with those crappy cheap chips with my whole family (and deceased grandfather) all gathered around a worn out dining room table. I really would!

Remember 98% of your players won't give two craps about the quality of the poker chips! An awesome poker table, quality comfy chairs and a hot dog roller will bring your players way more enjoyment than chips ever will! Hate me... but it is the truth! We collect awesome chips because "WE" in the chipping hobby have something we are passionate about. No different than a rare coin collector or any other hobby... I mean it's better than pokemon cards... but still just little discs! Lol

I can write alot. But normally it's only when I'm being helpful. Anything short means I'm being sarcastic.....

Hiya! Echoing some of the comments so far, 43mm chips can be used for whatever you like! I recommend you get yourself some samples before making the purchase - especially if you've never handled/played with 43mm chips. I just got my set of Royals and to be very honest... I'd never go back to 39mm if I can avoid it. The Royals from apache are seriously some of the most awesome chips I've ever played with!!!!!!

royals are a nice looking chip! personally i like 39mm chips best, and if royals were available in 39mm, i would own a set.

the part where you said you would only own one set of chips, i think everyone who ever joined this forum said the same thing... run as far away from this forum as you can and your bank account will thank you

this thread needs some royals pRon! can anyone contribute

Lol. One and only!

Get samples!

Paulson
Bud Jones
Ceramics

Go to your local casino and sit at a table game or poker game and see if you like the feel of their chips. If you do and are unsure what they are, check chipguide or post a photo here.

This will not be your one and only!

Fellow Newbie here trying to figure out what to purchase!

Recently, I bought some sample chips (Paulsons, china clays, metal slugs, and CPC) I am really digging the Pharaohs china clays. My ceramic chip samples are still coming in.

In addition, I am considering getting in on a group buy from the Tina vendor.

Black Friday is right around the corner so I am trying to be patient and hoping a sweet deal will pop up!

I had some samples of the Tina chips and really liked them. For the price you can't go wrong!

Hi all. New here but wanting to get a cash and tournament set, was thinking 39mm Bank for cash and 43mm Royal for tournament. Does it work ok to get enough for one table now and then grow the set for two tables later, will they match?

I personally like to get whatever I need or think I need right from the beginning. If it’s a financial thing get what you can and add on later.

I really enjoyed reading your post. I read it like 5 times.

Same here, great memories of playing poker with my family.

Also, enjoyed reading the next part of 98% on down. It helped me calm down from stressing which poker chips I should buy.

..........

Maybe @BGinGA or somebody of that nature can explain to us how larger chips originated for higher denominations
Nope, I cannot. I'm not even sure when the 43mm mold first appeared in the Paulson lineup (never researched it).

But European jetons have been made in a wide array of sizes for decades, increasing in diameter as the denominations increase (with acrylic plaques often representing the highest values).

Perhaps those were the inspiration for Paulson to start producing larger sized clay chips (several different diameters, from 41mm through 50mm). The development of the ceramic chip in the 1980s (also available in sizes from 39mm to 47mm) may have spurred Paulson to offer a competing larger product.
