I'm thinking of building a limit set. I understand that a limit set with $1 chips as the base denom is more flexible for lower stakes and for using as a "1x" chip that can be used for pretty much any value, but I really like the idea of a $2 chip in a limit set. It would limit (har!) me to stakes such as 2/4, 4/8 and 6/12, but there's something about a $2 chip that I like.

In either case, the big chip would be a $20.

If I go with $2 chips, I'm figuring I'd need 1200 x $2 and 200-300 x $20, for a max 8 player game. If I go with $1s, would I need more?

What says the consensus? Indulge my fancy for a $2 chip or be more practical/flexible and get $1s?

I'm in the $2 chip camp, but I'm actually having the same debate in my head.

I like the big chip being 20x for the ease of 1 chip being a barrel, but it's easy enough for it to represent 2 chips to a barrel if you use $20s/$2s.

I'm mostly swayed by some of the sets I've seen. Most $1 chip limit sets use white chips, and I like a little more color. That's not to say that you can't use custom colors or non-white $1s, but I've always been drawn to $2s (see avatar) or snappers for limit sets. It's all personal preference!

I'm new to the limit game. I also like two dollar chips. I'm going to use one and two dollar chips for a 3/6 game. Not ideal I'm told. Gonna give it a shot.

Starting stacks

30 x1
85 x 2

It depends on what you figure your standard limit will be. Our standard limit is $3/6. If you think your standard limit will be $2/4 then I would go with $1s, because it can easily spread anything up to $4/8.

If your standard limit is going to be $4/8 and higher then go with $2s. If you run a half kill, the next limit would be $6/12 which still works with $2s.

Ideally, go non-denom. Then the actual stakes don't matter.

If non-denom isn't an option for you, then answer this question: do you want to play $2/$4 at all? If the answer is yes, then $2 chips are not ideal for the game. They would obviously work, but part of the fun of limit is raking in monster pots, and you do that by having the big bet be at least four chips. Basically, the lowest denom you would want to go for a $2/$4 game is a $1 chip. The $1 chips also can play $3/$6 or $4/$8. If you go with $2 chips, the lowest you'd really want to go w/those is $4/$8, and then the next jump up is $6/$12, at which point folks may not be interested in playing limit any longer (I don't know your crew).

Following this thread.

And to add a question on top... what quantity of $1s do you guys like for a limit set? 1,000? 1,400? 1,800? 2,000?

I don't think you'll find anyone on this site telling you to get less chips ;)

Most folks I've spoken with say the most they want to seat for a limit game is 8. I've landed at a nice comfortable place of 1.5 racks of the base chip per seat, so for that I'd go (and have gone with my own personal set) 1200 chips. Most folks could probably be safe with two racks of high-value chips for a game like that. I went with three racks, because fuck it.

Anybody think of a microstakes limit set?

8 players
1600 - .25s
180 - 5s
20 - 100s

The hundos really aren't necessary in that game, but I won't be the one to argue with moar chips/moar color. I also would label that a small stakes game, but meh...labels.

As for the breakdown itself, that is sufficient to support up to $1/$2, and for a small stakes game, that should be plenty.

1.5 racks per is a good rule. I have 1500 $1s in my limit set. It seems to be about ideal for full ring. Every seat buys in for one rack, leaving 5 rebuys before the large denoms hit the table. We play $3/6 with a half kill to $4/8 mostly.

I like one rack per player for 2-chip/4-chip games (so 2/4 with $1 chips), but 1-1/2 racks per player for 3-chip/6-chip games (like 3/6 with $1 chips). You can play 4/8 with $1 chips, but I would want to have 2 racks per player available.

I definitely don't like playing 1-chip/2-chip limit games (using $1 chips for 1/2 or $2 chips for 2/4, for example), and I much prefer to have only two denominations on the table.

Nothing really more to add beyond what's already been stated above, but I just love the newfound interest in Limit poker lately. (y)
