The longer I'm here, the more I find stuff I like (and want). I've been thinking of a Cali inspired set and how I'd implement that into something meaningful for me, a guy who lives on the east coast of Australia.

I pitched this design to Cratty and Johnny5 but both guys are fairly backed up with work and Johnny hasn't been on the forum for a month so I'm putting it out to the world...or at least this forum.

The Background Stuff to set the scene;

Lake Kawana is a man made lake on the Sunshine Coast and is the heart of a relatively new precinct that is continuing to take shape as we speak. There are many low to medium rise apartment buildings being built both on the west side along the lakefront (the suburb of Birtinya where I live) and also along the beachfront to the east which is known as Bokarina.

The view from my balcony takes in the lake in the foreground, which is surrounded by a walking path, the sprawling suburb of Wurtulla beyond that and lastly the ocean.
The lake, being man made, does have a hard edge for the most part and is tidal too so, when the tide is low, there is a lip or wall to it. There are a few very tall Norfolk Island Pines along the beach as well as a fair share of Alexander Palms peppered about the place. For the last few years there has always been a construction crane on the skyline out there somewhere too.

I get a magnificent sunrise over the beach and often catch glimpses of the cruise ships and container vessels crawling along the channel out of the port in Brisbane before heading out to sea. Unfortunately, today was overcast so I saw none of either when I took these photos. :)

The Inlay Design;

My immediate inspiration was the Dunes Hotel & Country Club where;
  • the putting green and creek (?) is replaced with the lake and path,
  • the mounds and trees replaced with the pines, palms and buildings,
  • the flag is replaced by a construction crane, and
  • the font would be something similar to the Dunes font.

And this is one of the crudest sketches imaginable to give you an idea of what was in my head. Nothing in the sketch is set in concrete; I was just trying to include all the design elements to loosely represent what I see.

Lake Kawana sketch.jpg

I'll transcribe my chicken scrawl for you;
  • Rising sun
  • Construction tower/crane
  • Medium high rise apartments
  • Norfolk Island pines
  • Palm trees
  • Low hills (basically dark green to represent vegetation)
  • Blue lake
  • Walking path (grey) or Grassed area (green)
  • Sand colored lip to the lake (optional 'red' part but may make it too messy)
  • Sunshine Coast, Queensland (or Qld if space is limited) in lieu of Las Vegas, Nevada
I'm an amateur designer at best and this art needs work but this is something I came up with over the weekend on Photoshop. I think the blue and green are probably a bit too dark.

The Chip Design;

I looked at sets like Camino Casino, Circus Circus, Lake Elsinore and Huntington Park for example, but for the most part the inspiration for the Kawana set was the Caminos. Denoms would be 25c / $1 / $5 / $20 / $100 I reckon but I'd be interested to hear your feedback on a 10c / 50c / $2 / $10 / $50 breakdown as I doubt the hundos will get much felt time.

So, after all that, I'm hoping that maybe someone with mad Illustrator skills might like to take on the design challenge. I'd really love this design to be on a table topper, dealer button, and all the other things that make a great card room.

Thank you all for reading this far and I appreciate your feedback and/or critique.

Cheers,
Wade

I like your 5 and I’m a sucker for a Cali set.

It’s a fantastic chip without exceeding the denom (cost) if I’m not mistaken.

There are a few finer points to the set. For the day glow yellow I think the day glow peacock is too much contrast, and the tiger clashes with the pink.

I also feel that the black is too much as well, I really think the charcoal is a better color.

You should get a sample set for the CPCs before you order, so you can validate or invalidate my observations

That's a fair observation @Machine, thanks for that. I didn't really compare the colours together as a set; rather in isolation.

Version 2

Notes:
  1. Swapped the DG Peacock and Light Blue between the 1 and the 5.
  2. DG Tiger removed and DG Peach moved from the 100 to the 1.
  3. Charcoal replaces Black on the 20.
  4. DG Peach replaced by DG Saturn on the 100.

I agree that the Light Blue and Charcoal soften the contrast.

It is looking very nice!

I would test some green instead of yellow spot on the 100 otherwise I love it

Panic stations....CPC may close its doors next year!!! Or that's what the general consensus is. I'm sure someone will buy the business and keep us all in the chip manner that we have become accustomed.

Buuuttt, just in case, I will jump in the deep end and order a Ewing mold Cali cash set (heavily) based on the ever so sexy Huntington Park Casino. :love:

I think I have the inlay art sorted. But you tell me...

I really liked that first dune style inlay you had. Did you completely erase the idea of using that?
Don't get me wrong, the new inlay is pretty cool too, but completely different style imo.
And i'm a sucker for that 3D14 :love:

I’m still working on it but I’m just not happy with my art just yet. So I thought I’d try something a bit simpler. And I’ve fallen in love with the HP colours.

Received a quote from CPC for a 600 chip set. Unfortunately, with the aussie dollar exchange rate and shipping costs I can't justify close to 4 grand on a set. :(

I know @JeepologyOffroad has already done the hard yards for the HP design so probably a card mold set for this one if I can add my inlay.

Good lord Cratty, you are a very talented and much appreciated man in this community.

I think that is exactly what I wanted to do but I get a bit too lost in the process and over complicate things.

You probably smashed that out in under an hour in what I took all weekend to do. :D

Well, thanks to the legendary @Cratty, the art for this set has been skilfully and beautifully done. A sample set will be making its way to him whenever CPC gets these in the press.

I was away for a week on a cruise and had some forced time away from the internet to contemplate the colours and this is what I've locked in....at least until you guys have your way of course. :D
  • Mandarin Red for the frac. DG Peach was a must and when paired with Chocolate it gives the frac a HP vibe.
  • Initially, I thought about using DG Peacock for the one but preferred the subtler tone of Imperial Blue. I also wanted to use DG Saturn and I think it works here.
  • Yellow won out over Canary for the 5. I went with the “richer” of the two and DG Peacock and Retro Red give it some life.
  • As Maroon is the state colour of Queensland, I liked the idea of using that over Black for the 20. Retro Lavender is a favourite of mine and paired with the DG Green it gives the chip some pop.
  • Lastly, White with DG Tiger and Blurple for that sunset glow (even though it’s a sunrise on the inlay). ;)
I really like the classic 3D14 style which is why I love the Huntington Parks so much, so that was my starting point.

I did toy around with the 'mythical' edge spot progression for a second mockup.

2F14E8BB-7786-4172-B4E5-C15141125FF7.jpeg

And then I went rogue with the third one to try and best suit both the inlay shape and chip colours. I had flip flopped on using Canary and Yellow for the 5, so I thought I'd quarter it and kinda liked it. After I'd done the 20 and the one, they were starting to feel very familiar and I suspected I was being influenced by another set.

I went back through my bookmarks and found I was plagiarising @MarquetteMonkey's Tip Top Club. I didn't realise it at the time but I'd chosen most of the same base colours, particularly the Imperial Blue and Maroon. I'd come this far so finished it off with the hundo, replacing the Blurple with DG peacock. I think I Iike this version the most, but is it bad form to copy an element of someone else’s set?

Anyway, I think these colours work as a Cali set, and with the Kawana theme. Let me know what you think. Maybe a mix of all three sets perhaps. Only a couple more weeks until Christmas so I need to get this order in pronto. :oops:

That spot pattern does look pretty familiar! ;)

I have absolutely no qualms with you making a set the way you want it. We are lucky to have had CPC to allow us to make custom sets that we can all cherish and enjoy. Make the set that makes you the happiest! The fact that there is some similarity and inspiration is flattering. While I go back and forth which is my favorite chip from my Tip Top Club set, I know that I am most proud of the $5 because I think it was pretty unique. Making a yellow chip with CPC yellows can be challenging, but I am really happy with the way it turned out.

Good luck the rest of the way as you make your final decisions!

Surprise surprise, I changed my mind. :p

The thing I get out of living where I do is that I love how bright and beautiful it is. I mean it's Summer here for about 11 months of the year and even when it rains it's not dreadful. I need the chips to reflect the colour and joy I experience every day and I think my first choices were a little too demure; at least for the theme, that is.
So...rethink on the colour scheme and the spot design. And I know there is distain among a few for the Tri Moons but you have to admit they are fun.

LKC_Tri_Moons.png

Don't panic though, I did try some 3916s out with DG spots. These are simple; a little Key West looking but not too offensive.

LKC_3916s.png

And just for variety, I went with a 'triple spot' theme but mixed it up a bit. This one is probably the best combination I think. The 5 gives me 3D glasses vibes. :wow:

LKC_Trips.png

Gawd help me...:ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

The only crime I see is not doing a 314 on the 25c to create a perfect spot progression.. but all is forgiven with how much I like the 25c chip. Ha

My wife always tells me I’m too indecisive. But I don’t agree…or maybe I do…I dunno. :wtf:

Anyway, after submitting the CDI-a-likes to CPC, I had another change of heart.

Going with the full Dunes homage on this one. I’m done.

David Spragg is going to love me. :LOL: :laugh:
