I don't know what sort of games you are playing, but I would estimate that most 2/5 nl live game play like no more tough than most 25/50c online games.

The usual comparison I have heard is if you can beat 10NL online you should be able to absolutely crush live 1/2

The above statement is accurate when referring to the comparison between soft casino 1/2 and high rake 10nl.
Micros (5nl, tnl) are a great place to learn a lot of base skills. They are not where you go to make money or even to relax in a +ev manner. If we are talking about soft home game 1/2 (as opposed to soft casino 1/2,) I don't think it can be compared to any online game whatsoever. (tbf, less soft casino 1/2 is probably tougher than 10nl.)
At the micros, those 5$ or 10$ or whatever are FOUGHT OVER. At 5nl and 10nl online, all time I'm up 27$. That involved being down 120$ at some point.
I was never down live. I also happen to be up more than 27$ live!

*Only place where micro stakes are practical
*Game is about 2.5x as fast
Online Cons:
*Overrun by bots, if you don't learn to use a HUD, you are conceding too much advantage.
*No body language tells

*Need to be willing to play mid stakes to have a shot at beating rake as well as opposition
Personally I think the cons to online poker are dealbreakers.

Personally I think the cons to online poker are dealbreakers.
Live poker is so rigged. But the level of play is much lower and the ability to leverage tells is pretty high for experienced players.
My online experience is mostly private app with people I know, so not exactly representative. But the group I play with is pretty competent except for one or two players who are the Reason the game survives.
So really we should be evaluating this as matrix where the axis are Private/Public games and online/live.
I much prefer private to public, but enjoy both live and online for different reasons.

I haven’t played online seriously in a long time but I imagine anything above NL10 is full of people grinding out every damn cent. And that anything at any meaningful stakes is full of bots. Very unscientific method of ”I think”, but it’s a hard pass for me.

100% agree.
Obviously cheating takes place in all forms of poker, but people who think online poker is in anyway fair are the same people who still play Words with Friends and think their opponent really did know the word xiphoid.

I play online about every day and struggle to break even. Live, I hold my own.
There are some great things about online though, if you are ok with it being tough, though.

The whole cheating thing and bots is highly over played if you play at the right places.

I definitely disagree with the notion that online poker is overrun with bots if we, at the very least, require a bot to be "good" to consider it a bot. (Not just some java code that takes little knowledge of the game to write; at the very least, precomputed solutions to common spots.)
I think at the heart of thinking like a poker player is getting past qualitative questions like "are there bots?" question, because we as humans are likely to completely misevaluate whether or not someone is a bot. Instead, we should start with "what percent of players are bots that are left undetected" at the very least. I personally prefer just asking "is my hourly high enough for me to justify playing this game?" This implicitly factors in the supposed proliferation of bots into the game and more importantly is measurable.
Give the online players some credit, guys. They put a decent amount of work in and get roughly 8-9x the hourly volume that a live player gets. They're gonna be miles ahead, and to really say someone is a bot they need to be better than that very high bar.

I think even these are overplayed, though. There's little incentive to actually get a strong fundamental understanding of the game over simply playing TAG / nit and prioritizing a strong fundamental understanding of how to make connections and get invited to games. The only real benefit, I think, is that learning the game allows you to give action profitably -- from what I've read, to be banned from a game you probably have to be cold emotionally AND be playing a little nitty. Also, you don't get screwed at the once/month tables where everyone is a nit and playing LAG is insanely profitable.
Private online games are tougher than live but not by much.

The only positive thing about online poker is that you don't need to bother with certain things, you know, like pants. Other than that live poker is WAY better
