I don't know how many here work in IT, but in the IT world, there's a lot of mobility, and a lot of cross-pollination among managers.
When I said "you can't go back again", I meant that as pertaining only to the situation when you've told the company you're leaving. At that point, you have to go, or be branded as someone who can be bought. You lose both respect and self-respect.
Later on, in fact, you might wind up going back to the original company, for a different position, different project, whatever. In my own case, I wound up working for MITRE Corp. three different times during my career. No problems, no recriminations, etc.
