I have an odd proposition (1 Viewer)

I would like to go through the process of making a custom Paulson set, but have no interest in owning them when I am done. So I am looking for someone who would like to own a Paulson cash set without having to do some of the leg work to partner with me. I was recently in Vegas and harvested most of the chips I felt necessary for this set. They are all THC with inlay areas suitable for overlabeling.

I am looking at a 600 chip set with 100 blue fracs, 200 white $1, 200 red $5 and 100 green $25. The chips cost me $1500 and a few odd exchanges with cage personnel to acquire. All have some casino use, obviously, but appear to be in very good condition. I am looking to ultrasonically clean them and then design, acquire and apply the labels and then sell the set for $2200. But it seems to me to make sense to have the buyer determine the theme and participate in the design. My ultimate goal would be to end up with a set that comes anywhere close to @Kam's Roro's Cardroom set that I think is one of the most thoughtfully designed set of inlays I have seen. Thanks to him for letting me use his picture.

If this plan doesn't come to pass, I will be looking to sell the chips as a set or in pieces depending on interest.

Here is an update on the base chips for this set. I have cleaned the whites and reds and added a gray chip for the $100 denomination. I am also looking for an alternative green to fill out the set. But I think they are looking sharp so far.

But I am thinking that if no one is interested in creating a custom set with me, I will likely just leave the actual Paris chips as is and relabel the rest to create a full Paris set.

A lot has happened since the post above by @Jers28. What started as my attempt to make a small cash set primarily from the chips I harvested in Vegas has really taken on a life of its own. Jers28 wanted to create a custom set of Paulson's but didn't want to do the work of actually assembling it. As I said originally, I was interested in assembling a set but didn't want to own it. So a partnership was born.

I had already started looking for a barrel of $100 chips and acquired a minty barrel of CDM $100 from @JayBob.

The first twist was my realization that the Venetian $2 chips were just not anywhere as sharp as the Paris chips and the Venetian $1's. So they were out. We had no need for fracs in this set, so the Venetian $1's were out. I began to search for a nice, sharp THC green chip to use as the $25's. Thanks to @BKisback for supplying a minty rack of Scandia $25's. With these, my base set of 600 THC chips was in place.

But when I say in place, what it really meant was that it was our starting point for discussion and were soon considering a bunch of alternatives. Without going too deep into the weeds, we went round and round on the following issues:

• Jers28 likes bright colors so we looked around for brighter reds and greens.
• His cash game is larger than the set I envisioned so we needed 100 more $1, 200-400 more $5, another rack of $25 and a full rack of $100. So now the CDM's were out unless we could find another 4 barrels.
• We considered cannibalizing some red and greens from Jers28's set of Casablanca chips, but they are RHC mold and we realized they have oversized inlays that would be difficult or impossible to overlabel.
• But that lead us to consider mixing RHC molds with the THC molds if we found colors we liked better.
• Jers28 had a club name and logo that he uses on his poker tables and accessories, so this would form the base of the inlays.
  

This is where the tweaking of the label began. I will save that for the next post.

Casablancas are THC, otherwise crushed it. They still are shite for an overlay project because of inlay size, except the uber rare Casablancas that would potentially be a crime to overlay. lol

I’ll do my best to stay out of this thread, as we both know I’m a windbag…so no promises.

With the $1's, $5's and $25's in place, we started evaluating options for the $100's. The chips below became the ones we seriously considered.

I was personally a fan of #3 until @Jers28 fell head over heals in love with the Empress Star $100.

At that point, at $20/chip, all financial constraints were out the window. But this chip was perfect. It hit the bright notes. It worked really well for the edge spot progression. And it is just flat out striking. So now the base chips were set.

Acquiring enough of said chips however, was far from done. I had started with 35 of the Paris $1's and needed 200. Thanks to @djmarc and @FrankBlack for filling out those. I started with 200 of the Paris $5's but @Jers28 wanted 400 which then became 600 because, and I quote, "more is better." Thanks to @FrankBlack, @Jp74 and @Rieguy for filling out these. So with 600 $5's, we now needed 200 $25's so we needed another rack of Scandia $25's. @BKisback was kind enough to refer me to the person he bought his rack of Scandias from and @UnicornFlash was able to supply the other rack. We had long since determined that there was no need for fracs in this set, but following on the more is better theme, and filling the need for brightness, @Jers28 acquired a nice rack of fuchsia hot stamps to become the fracs. I think at this point @FrankBlack put us on a frequent flyer program.

That now brought milling into the process. Thanks to @pokercole who will be handling that part of the process for us. The most difficult chip to find has, by far, been the Empress Star $100. So, if we couldn't quite fill out the rack of hundos, why the hell not fill out the rack with $500's? We started looking at the Empress Star $500's and Tiger secondary $500's but then both @Jers28 and I came across an odd answer around the same time. These little beauties from @Tonysquander.

Now we had 50 of the ES100 so we needed 50 of these to fill out the rack, and not filling out the rack was just not an option and Tony only had 47 of them. Tony was able to find two more in the closet but that left us one short and thanks to eBay, we were able to find that final chip.

So, I think, at this point, we are finally done with acquisition. And the set looks like this...

When next I have some time, I will run through the evolution of the inlays and the torture we put poor Andrea at @Gear through with the everchanging label order. I will also post pictures of the actual chips before, during and after the labelling/relabelling process. But at the moment, while I have some chips, I also have a stack of tracking numbers.

The inlay for this set really did not require a ton of changes to bring to completion. @Jers28 already had a club logo that he had used on tables he had built and neon signs he had created. And when a man is committed enough to a logo to have it tattooed prominently on his body, there is no further discussion needed or possible.

And he had already created the base inlay for the chips.

Two things occurred to me. First, the denomination over the lion really took away from the beauty of the lion. Second, the text was a very fine font that would be difficult to read at scale. The first item we agreed on immediately. This was easily resolved by using the technique @Kam and I have both used, by making both the logo and the denomination a little smaller then moving the denomination off center to open space.

Jeremy was kind of married to the font since it is what was used on the tables. This was one of the points in the process where I think I got on his nerves because I wouldn't let it go. So he humored me and tried playing with it but wasn't real happy with most of the results. So we agreed to let the pros tell us which way to go. We asked Andrea and Chris at @Gear to let us know if they thought the font would be a problem. Ultimately, Andrea indicated she thought the font was too fine so Jeremy found one that was a little bolder and less scroll-like.

The next question was how to make the inlay pop a little more. That came down to using different colors for the text. Rather than matching the text to the primary chip color, we started using one of the edge spot colors to try and draw that out.

And the inlays were basically done. The only change was the ultimate addition of a $500 chip to the set.

The labels got ordered with the fracs and hundos going to Jeremy to label and all the others coming to me to do. That process has been completed and the finalized chips are in route to Missouri. So the next significant post in this thread will be from Jeremy showing the finalized set. I am looking forward to seeing those pictures very much. I would be remiss if I did not compliment @Gear for the amazing job they do color matching the edge of the labels to the colors of the chips so the label just blends perfectly. It really is impressive.
