How long after buying your first “real” chip set did you go all out to buy a premium set?

Did having an established regular home game motivate you more? Do you friends even notice how much better the premium chips are?

My home game is irregular with lots of “newbies” so I don’t think upgrading from Tiki Kings is really worth it yet.

I used cheap Bicycle plastics starting in the late 80s, bought super diamonds in 2002, then my first custom CPCs in 2020.

Although, I really wanted to go straight to clays in 2002…

Played with dice chips probably for a year. Did some searching back in the day for poker chips and forums and found Chiptalk.net

Once I joined, I got some ceramics, then some Bud Jones chips. It was probably 6 - 8 months later that I started to buy my first Paulson chips.

wanted to upgrade from dice chips and bought paulsons then cpc customs

Started with quarters and bills.
Moved on to the really light unslugged plastic diamonds probably around 2002.
"Upgraded" to dice chips around 2004.
Then bought a set of Chipcos in 2006.

There were about 6-8 of us that played dealer's choice cash games fairly regularly. I would invest my winnings into the game to help things fun.

It's been a couple years on here, and I still haven't upgraded beyond ceramics, and I don't think I will for the foreseeable future.

My first goal was to build a proper table, and find chips with a denomination on them so everyone would stop asking "how much are the red ones worth again?" a hundred times per game. That led me here, and to buy China clays.

Now I have a bunch of custom ceramic sets, thanks to Br Pro and the cards mold group buys, and feeling fairly content

Immediately, sort of.
I’d had dice chips for like ten years, like everybody else, but they’re not really part of the story.
I was playing in a game using dice chips. I thought it would be cool to have chips with numbers on them. I started reading all over the internet, and ended up here, marveling at the crazies paying a buck a chip for Paulsons.
First I figured I’d buy cheap ceramics. Then, my research told me that paying a little more for China clays made a lot more sense than cheap ceramics, because those chips had some problems. Then my research told me that paying a little more for good ceramics might make more sense than China clays, because those chips also had problems. So at this point, when I was planning on spending 75 cents per chip on good ceramics, it occurred to me that I could get pretty nice Paulsons for just a little more. And then it occurred to me that I could get really nice Paulsons for just a little more than that.
So long story short, the answer is immediately, sort of. I did months of research, and even more months of shopping and waiting for the right deals. I certainly didn’t rush into anything, but premium Paulsons were my first real chips.

No, I wasn’t hosting my own game. But I brought them to the game I was playing in, where people were happy to use them. But people were mostly happy to use them because they had numbers on them. Over the years, I’ve gone through a bunch of different sets, and players (who aren’t members of pcf) generally don’t notice and don’t care about the chips. (Though we had one colorblind guy who very much noticed and appreciated the different edge spots.)

So I started collecting old Foxwoods chips - a local casino where everybody has played - so they’d HAVE to notice. So far, so good :)

Within 3 months of joining. And I'll say, it's the better move then going cheap. Yes I understand it's not something everyone can undertake. But I've shown to my players multiple times that even a worn Paulson set will hold it's value better then Any cheaper options. Most of my players have resold years down the road (they all wanted sets, then we always play at my house... And it's not like I don't have sets covered) for a small profit.

In the worst case, they still have a value at resale.

Problem is some of us are just really stubborn and have to learn things the hard way. That was part of the journey to me as I went from good enough to what I really wanted. Also this:

I didn't ask you for your opinion or meme! How DARE you!.....

I'm a stubborn SOB. But I've figured out how to shrug alot too. Then walk away.

Used metal slugged for about 10 years, upgrade to China Clay and use about 1 year and covid hit

Found PCF, upgrade to Card Mold Ceramic within 1 month and bought my first Clay set after 5 month +

And my wallet crying now
I’m still new… what’s card mold?

To be clear, I joined here to guide my customs. Had I discovered this place earlier, I likely would have purchased customs earlier. It’s 2+ years now and I’m still figuring out what I like. :)

my first order of Poker chips was straight from CPC. Stock set of Rounders. I wanted to replace my tournament set of slugged plastics with better stuff.

The problem is/was….is I can’t seem to really quit. I wanted a cash set too, so I got some Paulsons. Then more other Paulsons….etc etc…

Before long, you are buying chips in a mouse clicking race from TCR.

Then you will come across TRKs and BCCs. There is also a whole entire world of higher end ceramics and plastics. I don’t like that world and it’s a good thing for me.

I’ve been trying to quit chipping for while. It’s not easy.

I don’t even host poker anymore. I go on with the Chips. It’s actually an undiagnosed illness with no real medication or solution.

I never consider the people I play with about upgrading my chips... they are for me and not them. If they happen to like them then that's a bonus but not a requirement.

First set of chips I really bought went in my hands at walmart after I opened the boxes of 400 Suited chips (that were actually pretty good in the first edition received in Canada, then became garbage in later resupplies). Taking home I believe 3-4boxes in the breakdown I wanted.

These chips were not kept long as I took them to a buddies within the week who had some as well and used the chips as a buy-in (exchange for cash) to a tournament resulting in my buddy having a big set to cover his 3-4 table tournaments and I went about looking for Better.....So I bought these Nexgen Lucky Bee's (still have them).

The Bee's were good but I randomly found an Ad on craigslist for poker chips for $1000. This was back in ~2008, I turned down the rack of real rounders $100's from the fellow who told me he was an extra.....His house was so sketchy, no windows in a nice part of Toronto easily the worst house on the street....but the chips were a huge score and were a hit for many years until I sold them for bigger and better things. (old cell phone photos were terrible and did not age well sorry Pharaoh's)

I took a several year break from poker (had a daughter) but wanted a nice set of chips again so quickly without buying samples bought these sets, Then joined Pokerchipforum/com and sold both playing only the Crazy Horse chips once and didn't use the Scroll's at all....Sold to make room for inbound custom CPC's, having had Pharaoh's the commercial china clays and ceramics didn't cut it and I wanted custom chips that would provide the game security my Pharaoh's never could back in the day.

After ordering my custom CPC's and settling in for a long wait I saw the HSI chips available. I loved my Pharaoh's and always wanted a real casino set which whenever I played the Pharaoh's was a question players would ask...."Are these real Casino chips?" and I would have to give the song and dance about how they "are" but "aren't really". The colors on the primary HSI are probably my favorite chip set up making me jump all over them. I have added on since the pic and am up to 4690 pieces now with chips and plaques counted.

By this time I had a lovely HSI set but my CPC's were ages away from completion and I saw posts for Card's Mold Customs and given the price point decided to gamble on ordering a "sister" set to my CPC customs as a secondary/primary set idea (3575cards/2100CPC). So ordered a whole whack of cards mold chips not knowing what to expect or if i'd be pitching some due to quality issues but was overwhelmingly surprised with how amazing they were.
Then finally my CPC order that I made after ordering the new commercial chip prior to the HSI's and Card's mold even being considered arrived....

Then made three other purchases of cool slightly smaller sets made along the way
Cincinnati 36mm NCV - 980chips

Atlantic Card & Dice Company Gaming School A.C.D.C - 900 chips

Majestic Star 36mm NCV- 800 chips

And now I am done with adding sets unless at least an equivalent number of sets go away.
the result LOTS OF CHIPS.....after PCF

Bought a 300 piece cheap metal slugged set back in 2010 to start holding home games, joined PCF late 2020 to look at upgrading to China clays and ended up with an 800 HSI primary set instead within 3 months.

Started out with dice chips as most did but soon wanted to upgrade. Bought a set of CDI 05s in 2005 that served me well untill I found this place a few years ago and learned that one needs at least one set for each day of the week.

This and only this. Don’t do this for others.
Not just for other people at your table. Don’t do it for other people on PCF. It’s so easy to fall into the trap where you’re trying to build or accumulate sets that will impress people here, that will get lots of likes and loves, that will make you some kind or credible baller chipper. Don’t do it.

My first set of chips was premium in my mind because the only ones I had seen were the thin interlocking Bicycle ones, and mine were top hats (injection molded plastic long before the internets). I didn't have an established game when I bought them. I just didn't like the interlocking ones I saw that other people had. When the poker boom hit and I found out dice chips weren't really official casino weight clay, I bought real premium chips as soon as I found some I *thought* I'd like.

Some of my players appreciate them. They types of people that appreciate art like them, but most, especially the degens/poker players, don't care.

Are you a collector, or do you just want nice chip? I'm the latter, and if you are too I'd recommend getting samples and taking your time to figure out what your end game custom set should be. In the meantime you can always buy a nice set you can sell in the future.

Started playing poker back in October/November of 21, quickly got addicted fell in love with the game. Upgraded from paper cards to plastic cards back in February and decided the next logical step would be to get some nice chips instead of dice chips. Currently in for a CM GB, and really hoping that I end up happy enough that I don't feel tempted to upgrade to paulsons/CPCs for a long while haha
