Factor in shipping and the cost nearly doubles depending on how many chips are in the lot
Ignoring those bottom four racks, we’re looking at 700 chips here. If they were each purchased individually, that’s $3500 in shipping. So you’re still looking at over $15k for 700 chips. Which seems insane to me, for a bunch of mismatched hot stamps. But apparently this is the real truth:
Yellow hot stamp $5 chips that are basically California chips only, and a couple hundred of them? Does not surprise me. I quit collecting California frac singles for a reason - the people who sell Cali singles are very proud of them.

Buying one of @Windwalker sets would be cheaper

Richard Bach story ::

Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river. The current of the river swept silently over them all - young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self.

Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocks at the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth.

But one creature said at last, 'I am tired of clinging. Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom.'

The other creatures laughed and said, 'Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you shall die quicker than boredom!'

But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks.

Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.

And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, 'See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies!

Those that are clinging to dice chips and card molds are clinging to rocks and twigs in the stream. Their games are battered and torn and they are always looking, never satisfied. Embrace the stream, quit clinging to rocks and enter the true world of chip collecting.

Quit using placeholders. Instead of having a lifetime of regret you can have a lifetime of enjoyment.

Truly one of the most epic collector endeavors and the definitive "grail set" that has been a joy to watch over the past decade:
Lee's (@41Pickup) Tropicana 1st Edition TRK playable set = Priceless

Nearly every individual chip has an accompanying acquisition story. Finding more than 1-2 at a time is extremely rare. Amazing to see a full rack of these materialize in a PCF global scavenger hunt! There aren't many $10k+ individual racks out there, but I'll bet this is one of them.....

I never tire of seeing this set. And it was a victory for all chippers when Lee finished the rack

Nope. I just see direct answers to a question that was asked.

Best answer IMO was from @aggie

I wouldn’t take answers to a question asked, as bragging. Just my opinion though.

Wasn’t singling you out. He just asked what he could expect to spend, not what is the maximum he could spend. A little pron was fine but it was going in a direction that would never answer his question in a reasonable manner.
He didn’t ask what people spent.
I’m pretty sure he was looking for what’s a reasonable number so he’s not overpaying and underpaying by buying cheap shit that has no value.

But maybe he was looking for a pron thread, the internet is so fickle nowadays.

I can agree with you here.

The OP however asks what is reasonable…

That’s a wide range to all. $100 might be stretching it, while $100K ain’t even a scuff.

Reasonable is a funny word….. yes?

No it’s not that hard. Look at all the “direct” answers to his question. List them.

Now ask if that what most “reasonable” sets sell for here. You guys are listing exceptional sets and saying “see this is the average”. It’s not.

I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to be branded a villain here is to try and keep threads on track.

That can’t be right.
•You want 10 blue chips on eBay but they're in a lot of 25 for $70 with $9.00 shipping so you end up paying $79 for 10 chips.
•You find 1 chip for $8.99 w/ $5.00 shipping that's $14 for that chip.
•In the beginning its easy to gobble up large lots but nearing the end you start paying more money for individual chips so as not to have to buy all the other chips you don't need.

it’s all doable at Wally world for a few bucks. Horrible Chips though, will leave you wanting more…

It’s also doable with Tina and CM chips. Hundreds now, but still very good value, but still not a Paulson.

Then there are buttery smooth shuffling used stuff out there. Nowadays it seems to be a buyers market, so I’d go forth and search some out.

Then it’s minty TPs and other GB chips. Costs are astronomical.

Then there is real leaded THC casino stuff, real crème de la crème of chips, or TRKs, also crème….

What’s your budget expectations? How many players. I know guys that run MTT cash games. It’s a pretty vague question in a way
Can you explain a bit for these abbreviated terms for new chippers?

I see 'Tina' and CM' all the time. Still no real idea what they refer to.

TP, GB? THC (top hat?)?

Thanks :)

I’ve built my share of racks and sets from singles - I understand how it works. I once bought a lot of about 400 singles because there were about 60 I wanted. After you pay $79 for those 25 chips, you keep the 10 you want and you sell off the other 15 for $40 bucks, and now you’ve paid $39 for those 25 chips.
And personally, I’d call it $30 because that $8.99 shipping might be a cost of doing business, but it’s one you choose to eat, putting together a set like that.
I dunno, do the accounting the way you want, but I think tacking on the shipping costs to every chip you own is misleading. And they’re costs you’re very unlikely to recover.

And sure, you’re entitled to overpay stupid asking prices for singles on eBay if you want instant gratification, but in the long run you’re just driving up your own costs. If you pay $20 for a $10 chip, the next one will probably cost you $25. And if you buy that one, the next one might cost you $30. So I maybe don’t do that. Maybe wait for reasonable eBay sellers to come priced along - they are out there. By all means, pay as much as you want, but don’t get surprised when people question what you payed.

But like I said before, I will admit not understanding the economy of rare yellow $5 hot stamps. Turns out they can be crazy expensive.

Budget in his intro thread is $150, some of the suggestions on here a bit out of his range but a cheap set doable to get started
