I recently upgraded my own Fineni horse race game and thought I’d offer these upgrades for sale to PCFers.

Here’s a brief summary of what I’ve created:

4 Color Donkeys
I never liked how the metal horses that come with the board are all basically the same, making it hard to tell which racer is which during the race. I wanted them to be easily identifiable, by number and/or color. So I designed and 3D printed custom donkeys, each wearing colored and numbered cloths that correspond with traditional horse racing gear:

I printed these in PETG for added strength and designed the donkey to avoid having easily breakable parts. We’ve played with these new donkeys several times over the past month and they seem to be sturdy. So far, no breakages. And my group all loves how these pieces look far more than the original horses.

Scratched Upgrade Kit
Next, I wanted to come up with a better way to identify the four scratched racers and the amount each scratch costs. The four holes on the board behind each number on the starting line work ok, but it’s not super easy to tell which lane is which, and there was no easy way to designate the amounts you have to pay for each scratch. We often change the amounts from race to race, so this ambiguity was annoying. So I created the Scratch Upgrade Kit:

(1) A two-piece SCRATCHED FROM RACE plate that attaches to the holes in the board enabling you to more easily identify which racers scratched and how much to pay for each.

(2) Eleven racer number pieces, each with an attached hole enabling you to place the scratched racer in it and making it easy to see from front, back or side what the scratched numbers are.

IMG_2108.jpeg

These racer number pieces also can work with the stock metal horses if you don’t want 3D printed racers:

(3) Various denomination pieces to indicate the cost of each scratch.

Probability Correction Kit
If you have played this game, or read some of the posts on the Official Horse Race Game Thread (https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/official-horse-race-game-thread.87186/), you’ve probably noticed that the probabilities of each racer winning are not exactly close - 2 and 12 win way more often than any other racers and 6, 7 or 8 rarely win. I think @Darson ran simulations that showed 2 and 12 each win around 20% of the time while 6, 7 and 8 each win less than 4% of the time. He suggested if you added a hole to the 2 and 12 lanes, removed a hole from 5 and 9, removed two holes from 6 and 8, and removed three holes from 7, you’d end up with a far more balanced race where every number would have between an 8% to 10% chance at winning. I wanted to play a more balanced game so I created a Launch Pad that covers the first 1/2/3/2/1 holes from the 5 to 9 lanes and I drilled an extra hole between the two holes in the 2 and 12 lanes (where I’m pointing in the picture below) and added rivets to make it look original:

On my board, I added my Tilted Donkey logo to my launch pad. But I also played around with solid colors, as well as a design that includes arrows in an attempt to look sort of like how the boost pads look in Mario Kart.

Pricing

Set of Donkey Racers:

Each set includes eleven donkeys printed in PETG in four colors, each numbered with traditional racing colors. Limited quantities in stock. If there is interest, I can print more but there will be wait times after initial quantities are gone (it takes about a day to print each donkey due to the number of color changes, so a set would take at least a week or two).
$30 plus shipping

Scratched Upgrade Kit:

This kit includes the two-piece SCRATCHED FROM RACE plate, a set of 11 racer number pieces and your choice of four denomination pieces, along with a velvet bag with drawstring. Additional denominations available as an add-on if you’d like more than the four included in this kit. And if you wanted denominations other than those shown, just let me know and I’m sure I could create them.
$20 plus shipping
(*add on additional denominations for $1 each)

Probability Correction Kit:

This kit contains a launch plate to cover up holes in the 5,6,7,8 and 9 lanes and two rivets to place in holes you would drill in lanes 2 and 12.
$10 plus shipping for a launch pad with multiple colors (like my tilted donkey pad or the arrows design)
*Customization may be possible if you already have an existing logo you would like to include on the launch pad; message me to discuss
$7 plus shipping for a single color launch pad

Deluxe Donkey Racing Combo Kit (limited quantities available):

The Deluxe Combo contains a set of Donkey Racers, a Scratched Upgrade Kit, and a Probability Correction Kit at a discounted price. Limited quantities available.
$55 plus shipping.

Other options:

If you are interested in a different set of 3d printed custom racers for your set, please message me to discuss, as I might be able to help you out. For example, I designed and printed a set of 3-color numbered flamingo racers for @WhiteMamba1646 :

Also, these kits have all been designed for the Fineni board layout. If you are interested in a kit but have a non-Fineni board, please message me to discuss. For example, @TricycleClub has a board with the same layout as Fineni but larger holes:
IMG_2113.jpeg

I created little donuts to attach to the donkey’s posts to enlarge them and now the donkeys work on his board.

I think that’s it. Please pm me if you are interested or if you have any questions. Thanks.

If anyone on here has a 3d printer and is interested in printing any of this, I posted files here:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/13...upgrades-to-horse-race-game#profileId-1349041

Free for non-commercial use.

I will warn you, printing the donkeys in 4 colors with separate colors for each will take a long time and waste a lot of filament. If you wanted to print a set of donkeys and don’t want to waste as much filament, I’d recommend giving every donkey the same cloth color and printing all 11 on one plate.

I’ve got this one. https://a.co/d/2rByEvv

It’s 23.6” x 11.8”.

The issue I’m having is that the drill holes are 1/4 inch large. So 2 things:

1) I think the plates might not fit well.
2) I’m trying to get the horses to fit more snug (they fall over easily).
Ah, yeah that is a different board. I haven't found grommets that fit with that board. I think if you added holes in lanes 2 and 12, you'd likely need to leave the wood exposed. However, I believe I can alter the scratch plates, racers and launch pad to all work. @TricycleClub and @Salmonblaster both have boards that have larger holes than the fineni boards and I was able to increase the size and locations of the posts to make things work with their boards:
IMG_2114.jpeg

I'd need to get some measurements from you if you were interested, but I think we could make it work. Just message me if you are interested. Thanks.

I just messaged them both to see what boards they have and to see what they did about the horses fitting more snuggly. I’ll dm about dimensions once I figure out if I’m keeping this one or moving on to another one that’s more standard.

I realized these are visible in the background of the pic in the previous post so I figured I should give some context. I also designed printable cards to use with the game, complete with racehorse-style names based on some of the donkeys... er, I mean players... from our home game:
IMG_2261.jpeg

They crack me up and are actually playable. But they take way too long to print due to the need for a smaller 0.2 nozzle to show detail, and they aren't perfectly identical due to minor printing inconsistencies from card to card. I'd never use this kind of printable card for regular poker, but they work for donkey races due to the pure randomness/lack of strategy of the game.

I posted this file on the makerworld link above as well if anyone is interested in printing a set.

For anyone with the same issue as me (having an abardi over sized board with larger than needed peg holes) here’s how I addressed the issue:

I bought Copper Crimp Connector
I cut the connectors using a Junior Tubing Cutter to the appropriate length (just under the SK stamp on the connectors).
I hammered the 12 connectors as gently as possible onto each of the horses. Now they fit snug.

Next up: I’ll figure out if I want to drill the extra holes and get the launch pad. There are definitely scratch plates in my future. :)

Has anyone ever seen this game for sale locally? I ordered from Amazon so we could play it tonight at our family get together, but it was delayed and didn’t show up yesterday. Just wondering if anyone knows any places I could check to maybe find it brick and mortar.

I’ve finished printing a second wave of donkeys if anyone is looking to upgrade their game before the Kentucky derby next weekend.
Highest recommendation I can possibly give. If you have a horse race game, these upgrades will take your game from the glue factory to the winner's circle! Played a few rounds with family this weekend and it was SO much easier keeping track of scratches and amounts. I'm really looking forward to derby day with my new setup!

I received my upgrade on Friday, just in time to run a few races before our league game Saturday. Everyone loved it. Definitely recommend! I might have to get the flamingos as well!

For people who don’t want to or don’t have the equipment to drill extra holes for 2 and 12, how about a 3D printed platform that has 3 peg holes across a span, and then underneath two pegs that fit into the two holes on the board in those lanes?

This is amazing!

I noticed that there are different sized Fineni boards. Is there a specific size these upgrades fit on?

This one is 16x10 for $38

This one is 21.7x11.7 for $109
https://a.co/d/941A7sQ

Will these work for both?
I replied via pm but figured I'd post here in case anyone else is interested.

I hadn't seen the smaller board before this, but it looks like the same layout. I'd need measurements of hole locations to make sure, but I am pretty sure I could resize my scratched plates and launch pad to make them work for the smaller board.

I do think the size of each lane on the smaller board is significantly smaller than the "regular" board, so I doubt the donkeys (or other racers I have printed up to this point) would work on the smaller board, but I'd need measurements to make sure. I can't tell from the amazon link but it appears the smaller board is using the same metal horses as the larger board, as the starting line looks more crowded. I could probably print some smaller custom racers for that board, but they would likely have to be smaller than what I have been printing.

Hope this helps.

A big thank you to @wonderpuddle for these upgrades! They look amazing! He was able to put my Wandering Eye logo on the launch pad. I wasn’t sure about my drilling skills, so he made a plate to go onto the 2 and 12 lane! He even included a bag to hold all of the pieces.

Next poker game is Tuesday night. I will be introducing this game to my crew, and hopefully it takes off!
