My friend and I are really serious about starting a poker stream in Indiana. RFID table, PTZ cameras, and all. We'd be streaming our home game once or twice a week on youtube or twitch. We play super small but we just want to do it for the love of the game more or less and we think it'd be awesome to do. Our main concern is if it's legal and if we'd be breaking any laws. The game will be rake free also. We aren't going to advertise that it's in Indiana and we plan to keep cash off camera. If any one has any knowledge on the legalities of this or anyone to talk to, please let me know!

If money is not an issue then you would be well-advised to spend a little bit of it on an attorney who is local to your jurisdiction and has some familiarity with the gaming laws and their application in your state.

Laws vary so much from place to place that I wouldn't put much faith in anything that anyone here told you.

What part of Indiana? Indianapolis?

You can have a game and stream it if there is no rake in Indiana. @CrazyEddie has provided some great advice.

Need a player? ;)

I can help with Audio / Video, everyone remembers cameras, but you'll likely want at least a shotgun mic

Thank you. I just wanted to start here first to see if anyone had any resources.

Might I ask a key questions here, why?
My dream is to one day have a business that is in poker, someway, shape, or form, like I'm sure many of us on here. I've always loved the idea of a stream and one of my friend's offered to pretty much fund the whole thing. I look it as a great way to start a new part of the streaming community and a way to get into the poker business. I'm a younger guy, 22, and i want to attract a younger crowd that can relate a little bit more to the lower stakes and the more fun side of the game rather than the super high stakes professional side.

Great call. Good mics for sure.

NWI area. I'm going to try to find a good attorney to talk to, but that's what I had thought, but you never know there's always stipulations and grey areas it seems. I wanted to use Sennheiser Lapel Mics but we're going to use a decent boom mic thats hanging down from the ceiling just enough to pick up audio but just enough to where it's not in the middle of the shot and being a nuisance.

I think this is super cool and I wish you the best of luck!

Oh, and I’d definitely watch it

Then you definitely need to have an attorney. You also have to recognize that this is very unlikely to be a profitable endeavor which means you're going to need to do a LOT of research and planning to figure out what the mechanism is going to be to make money from this. If it's ad revenue from views you're going to need to figure out how to make it entertaining. Most people aren't going to want to watch a bunch of random people playing low stakes poker. LatB and Hustler Live are probably not very profitable and are probably more of a commercial for the property than anything. And these are casinos that have huge pockets, marketing and PR teams and access to very high end equipment. And just because no-rake poker may be legal, making money off of streaming it may not be. Another reason for the attorney.

DJI with Rode Lav mic is where its at if you are going to mic everyone, you might be able to get by on a single shotgun mic, but you'll likely want 2. I'd start with OBS (its free and a great streaming software).

What's your camera setup going to be, a single top down, or 2 a top down and a single from the side?

If you want help building a custom table, I can help there as well.

Are you familiar with Postle? How are you going to prevent it?

I'm pretty familiar with rode but not that exact mic, so I'll have to check those out. I planned on using OBS, I've used it a little bit in the past. We want to use 5 or 6 PTZ cameras for each 4 corners of the table, the flop, and then one for seat 5 / wide angle behind the dealer. I am familiar with the postle situation LOL, we plan to take everyone's phone during the stream (going to be hard with my generation) and we're also going to do custom chips so noone can sneak chips, and we're obviously going to have it on a delay.

@Machine ^ And for sure, thanks for the recommendations! I appreciate it. I'm keeping my ears and eyes open to any ideas and help.

Might be easier to not stream it but produce it, you'd likely need at least 2 or 3 people to run it live even with a delay, flipping to the best camera. You also won't have to worry about taking mobiles, which could end up being a deal breaker for some players.

Also don't forget lighting, you'll need significant lighting.

I'd 100% be interested in watching if this were to come to fruition.

I imagine logistics to be a nightmare, the best way forward if you have all the necessary equipment would be to have a dedicated person on the stream deck who's controlling the camera angles being shown as well as providing technical support. The cameras don't need to be expensive you can get great cameras for 100 a piece which are more than suitable for this. This is assuming you aren't just going fro a static birds eye camera the entire time

I love this idea! if you figure the details out and move forward, there’d be lots of folks who’d enjoy following this sort of thing, including myself.

And, if you could get an initial version of this idea up and running, I bet there’s some folks from the vendors area of PCF that might want to either help sponsor in some fashion (table, cards, tshirt, etc.)?

Good luck exploring this further!

That's super cool, I really hope this works out for you!
One suggestion - no clue if this is actually a good idea or not, but I've always been surprised that poker streams don't interview players more. After a big hand, pull someone away for a hand or two to get their thoughts on the hand, what they were going for, what they thought the other guy had... this could provide super interesting insight into the players heads, and also be pretty funny if the guy is swearing up and down the the other guy had a full house, while the overlay silently shows the other guy had 7 high.
I guess this could stall action a bit, but if your players aren't huge nerds about seeing every possible hand, it probably wouldn't be the end of the world if a player missed a hand or two after doubling up.

I am from NE Indiana and this sounds like an awesome idea! I would watch your stream and I would love to join your game sometime! Looking forward to when you get this up and running!
