Sitting Out
I recently stumbled upon a simple but effective method for contacting my poker group, and I thought I'd share it with the community here. Managing a group of over 20 players for scheduling games has become a bit of a challenge. Standard group text messaging has its limitations (recipient cap of 20 people), and my group isn’t keen on using apps like WhatsApp or GroupMe, nor do they reliably check their emails. Creating a new text thread every time someone leaves or joins the group is a real hassle.
I’ve seen invite tracking sheets mentioned, but they felt too complex for what I needed. Enter iPhone Shortcuts!
Here’s what I do now:
If you’re facing similar challenges with managing your poker game invites, give this a try! I’d love to hear if it helps or if anyone has other creative solutions.

Here’s what I do now:
- I created two “Send Message” shortcuts using the Shortcuts app on my iPhone. One shortcut is for iPhone users (iMessage allows groups up to 32 people), and the other is for Android users.
- The beauty of this setup is the flexibility. When someone new joins or leaves the group, I simply edit the shortcut’s contact list. No more manually creating new group text threads or juggling multiple apps.
- When it’s time to send out game updates or invites, I just run the shortcuts, and the messages go out seamlessly to everyone.
