Home Game Amounts (1 Viewer)

My game used to be $1/2 NL and we had a $200 max. That fell apart around 2008 when everyone was having kids. I got a new game together in 2017 that was .25.50 $50 max to get new players comfortable with cash. That game turned into 50/1 then 1/1 $120 max.

In the past year several of my old crew (guys who played poker all their lives and often at the casino) have started playing in that game and always asked to raise the stakes. I’ve been hesitant because i know this is how games break up. I switched my weekly limit game that lasted from 2002-2005 to NL when that casinos first spread it and people were asking. We were in our late 20’s and we lost 75% of the player pool we had. Ruined the game.

Lesson is resist raising the stakes…even with casino players. I think $50/1 or $1/1 with a $120 max is about perfect to get a regular player pool and be able to fill seat regularly

You can run a limit game for ages with a consistent player pool. Folks get together every week and have a good time, no one gets hurt too badly, and even the fish book a nice win once in a while.

Switch to NLHE and many of those players—mainly the least serious players—will feel like they've been dropped into a shark tank. The game becomes less about fun and socializing, and more about a handful of competitive players pushing for max value and putting people into stressful spots.

The character of the two types of games is just so different. Limit poker is more casual. NLHE is a hustler's game.

I personally loved limit poker …but unfortunately there isn’t many left like you and me. When the request came in for NL countered taking the game to $4/8 or even $5/10 limit but they didn’t want it.

Our “home” casino was Borgata and when they first spread $1/2NL that was the validation they needed. First couple games maintained the weekly cadence but several a night would get stacked and go home early or stay but they suddenly have excuses why they couldn’t make the next game. Even the loudest voices for the NL change suddenly had things coming up….the same guys that played every Wednesday night for 3 years. The game went from weekly to monthly to every few months to a couple times a year. After that, we all got married and had kids didn’t play for a long time.

That's what happens. The fishiest of the fish bust out first, and when they're gone, the middle players lose their edge, and it travels all the way up the food chain.

NLHE is a decent competitive poker variant and a clear top choice for tournaments, but as a cash game it's for hustlers and sharks.

We play a weekly $1/$2 with a $300 buy in, match the stacks rebuys and add ons, optional button calls the bomb pots after every mono suited flop (usually start at $10, but routinely ends up at $100 because we are psychos), dealer and food provided, no rake. Each player kicks in $20 for food/beverages, but even that is optional. We had a waiting list most of the night Saturday night and over 12k on the table by the end of the night. It’s not always that big, but $6k is about as low as it’s been all summer. I only started hosting again in late April after nearly a ten year hiatus, minus the occasional small stakes game with friends and family.

Having said that, the nearest casino is 2 hours a way.

I have a core of six players that are here like clockwork, including my soon to be 15 year old son. The others are a steady rotation and several of us are constantly recruiting. And I give $100 in chips to any first time player as a bonus.

We also play smaller stakes tournaments every four to six weeks to attract new players to the room. The room itself does a pretty good job convincing most to stick around for at least a few cash sessions.

I don’t allow anyone to get out of hand, whether it’s booze, drugs, temper, etc. One warning and then you’re banned, so it’s a family friendly environment.

We’ve haven’t had any issues yet, as I try my best to explain to new players this is not the game for just everyone. The regs can all afford to lose a grand or more and no one is hurt financially or as their feeling hurt. If you buy in with $100-$200, you’d better get off to a smoking hot start or you’re just giving your money away. I added on to $800 on Saturday before I played a single hand post flop. My son didn’t join us until around 10pm (he was on the wait list as he failed to RSVP/said initially he was taking the weekend off) and when I text him to tell him a seat was available, I told him don’t even sit unless you’re going to buy in for at least a grand. By that time, a few of us had stacks of $3k ish.

It has been a lot of work to fill the last few seats each week, but tbh, I think that’s mostly due to summer vacations, kids out of school, etc. I must have heard from 20+ players last week alone that said they couldn’t wait to get back to the game after Labor Day.

I definitely agree you need to decide what tone you want for your game. Mine is not a sit back a shoot the shit with your friends casually game. We laugh and have fun, but some nights, my pulse will stay above 120 or so all night from the extremely uncomfortable spots we put each other in. But, that’s the fun for me. The tournaments I could give 2 shits about. I’ll BS with the boys and barely pay attention when the buy in is $50-100. Otherwise, we are all out for blood, but in the best way possible. I mean, my own son and I bash heads as often as anyone.

I’ve talked about lowering the stakes and the general consensus is on the main table, they prefer $1/$2 that with straddles, plays much bigger. We had a quadruple straddle hand Saturday night. And half the guys bet $100 on the side for a black or red flop. Degenerates!!! Once we get settled after Labor Day, I’m planning on having a side table with 50¢/$1 blinds and a $100 max buy in. We will see what that does for the room as a whole. Hopefully it gives the tournament players another option.

If you aren’t willing to constantly recruit and hopefully have some help doing so, I’d lower the stakes. There’s no doubt my turnover would be less if we played smaller.

CASH games:
  1. SPREAD: $0.25/$0.50, $0.50-$5.00 Spread Limit, Full Kill, and $2 Double Bomb Pots every 30 mins
  2. N/L: $0.25/$0.50 starting buy-in limit is a strict $20. Rebuy limit increases $20 after every 5 rebuys (add-ons only allowed when stack is 25% or less of total limit). The concept: to be a table bully you have to "earn" it, not just start with a ton of chips - it works.
  3. N/L: $0.50/$1.00, $2 Bomb Pots every 30 mins
TOURNAMENT games:
  • $20, Rebuy only allowed in 1st Round. T500, Blinds 5/10 (lasts about 2-2.5 hours)

This is the home game that bounces around between friends homes. No rake. Dealer works on tips. Food, booze, nonsense, fun. Very friendly.

Its $2-$5 NLHE and gets off every few months and is a great time.

I ran it once with borrowed Parx RHC to get some Paulson THC in play and the boys enjoyed how well they stack.

I run a bi-weekly game that is $1/$2 max buy in $200 with unlimited rebuys. Usually get between 8-12 players, but will be expanding to 15-20 shortly as we are assimilating another house game into mine. All guys with quite a bit of experience including 2 former casino dealers and at least half have played in the WSOP Main Event. Really good time, and money tends to add up nicely. Usually end up over $4k total at the end of the night, but with the new additions, I expect that to close to double.

1/2, 300 buyin/max. After two hours, 500 or half match the biggest stack. Biggest winner and loser is usually +/- 1K. It's a nice balance of playing for money that means something to people but no one is going broke. Most we've had on the table is 7500 9-handed.
In a similar vote ! Are games started smaller but now winning means something with bigger pots . We aren’t as big as yours though might get there soon though lol
