I'll be hosting my first home tournament since 2018 (heck, I haven't even played in a tournament since then) this July and am looking for some help.

I'll be hosting two tables for a special event and so I thought it would be a good opportunity to finally play a tournament. We'll be 16 players max. and, given that a lot of our crew aren't into tourneys, I am aiming to keep the tournament short and running cash tables after that.

I'm thinking a quick freeze-out type tourney. As I don't actually own a tournament set, I'll be borrowing a set from another chipper. Assuming a T25 base chip with no real restrictions on chip denominations, what kind of starting stack and blind structure would you all recommend to keep the tournament somewhere around 2-3 hours, but without it becoming a complete shove-fest too early on? For payouts, I'm thinking either top 3 or 4 players (assuming 16 players), with a relatively flat payout.

Appreciate the advice!

Wow, that's turbo. If you want it over in 2h, I would suggest no more than 100BB stacks with 15min rounds.
Yeah, I think 3 hours is more my target. Given the group, I know guys will be eager to get the cash games going, so I'm trying to strike a balance.

So I am pro 18 minutes levels as a minimum. You can realistically play 10 levels in that timeframe.

50-100, 75-150, 100-200, 150-300, 200-400, 300-600, 400-800, 600-1200, 800-1600, 1000-2000

So the tournament will end during or before the 1000-2000 level with roughly 40K in play. Divide that 40K by how many entries you expect (would you allow rebuys?)

If it's 20 entries (16 players plus 4 re-entries), the starting stack should be 2K. If no re-entries and just the 16 players, then you can up it to 2500.

It's tough to put this many players in a tournament in a tight space, but a 20BB start is probably where you really need to be. Another option for a short time frame is a "double up" tournament. The tournament ends as soon as half the players are out and those that remain win double the entry fee.

Thanks!

No re-buys was the idea. 20BB seems low to me, but perhaps I'm being unrealistic with my thinking for this? What's a normal BB start and tournament duration look like?? Maybe I need to re-think this.

Also gonna tag @BGinGA on this.

T25-base 16-player tournament in ~3 hours:
- 10k starting stacks (12/12/5/6), no re-buys
- 25/50 opening blinds (100bb)
- 15-minute blind levels (59% avg increases)

600 chip set:
200 x T25
200 x T100
80 x T500
100 x T1000
20 x T5000 (color-ups)

blind structure:
L1 25/50
L2 50/100
L3 75/150
L4 125/250
remove T25 chips
L5 200/400
L6 300/600
L7 500/1000
L8 800/1600
L9 1200/2400
remove T100/T500 chips
L10 2000/4000
L11 3000/6000
L12 5000/10000

Event should finish no later than L12, or roughly 3 hours max. plus two color-up breaks. 100bb should provide ample early play without feeling too rushed.

Paying the top four should be fine (50%-30%-15%-5% or 40%-30%-20%-10%).

We've used a similar single-table structure in satellites for the main events at meet-ups; those 10-player events typically last just over 2 hours.

This looks perfect to me!
