I see these sometimes. Are they the same cheap plastic as dice chips or some kind of clay?

They are called Super Diamonds and are plastics. Good chips if you want a super cheap MTT set.

Edit: these should be priced at 5c per chip.
 
I actually don't think these are worse than dice chips. Not a lot better, but better nonetheless.

The older vintage Super Diamonds (probably 40-50 years) are actually quite good, in consideration. The modern mass produced ones are nowhere near as good.

They are super cheap, I'll give you that. But (to quote myself from earlier this year):

I just did a quick look. 1000 Super Diamonds are around $200.00 on Amazon. That's without any customization. And those chips are utter shit. I say that not as a chip snob but as someone who was forced to use them as a last minute emergency fill in for a 60 person game charity game (had been only a 30 person game previously). They will not stack to save your life and seem to go flying if you look at them wrong.

I think the crapitude of these chips outweighs any possible financial benefit. YMMV
