I got a new barrister bookcase for displaying my chips. I have a fairly large basement, at least 20 feet wide. If I put the bookcase on the OPPOSITE wall from the windows, but sunlight still comes in during some times of the day and hits the chips through the bookcase glass, will this eventually damage the chips?

The chips are stored in Justin-style racks, and behind the glass of the bookcase. But the sunlight does shine through the window 20 feet away, onto the chips.

Safe, or not safe?

Thoughts??

Do transparent UV filters exist?

Maye rotate your chips monthly so different ends are facing the sun. At least the tan is uniform then.

Unrelated but I like how Tigers are undisputed "Top Shelf" chips

Dibs Silver Stars :cool

I think you should be alright, but why not get curtains for the windows to be safe?

I more or less have the same thing.
In the winter, when the sun is low it makes it across the room it beams into the case.
I have opened and checked. Mostly to make sure there is no heat buildup. None.

For me, I doubt thru the outside double glass window and the case glass much UV is really not going to do much.
Keeping chips there for many years and I see nothing happening due to this.
I use open racks. The closed ones you use are probably another plus.

But then I have a tapestry facing north , never in direct light except the front door front glass arch and I just noticed only recently the half that catches indirect light from the door is faded.

If you have direct light there all the time there maybe there is a coating you can put on the glass.

PS I really like the case. :cool All wood or laminate? Stain choices?
I want more height like that. Time to look into it.

They will absolutely be damaged by UV light if given enough time. I would either swap walls, hand curtains or have UV film installed. You can get it with minimal tint, I’m almost positive I used no tint in one of the walls in my old office building.

It will eventually cause damage. UV tint on the window is likely the best method to prevent that other than covering it altogether with blinds or curtains.

1. I do not know about UV protection.
2. Beautiful displaying of chips
3. Hoard to large to fit in new cabinet (see birdcages on top)
4. Get rid of chips or moar cabinets

Moar cabinets !!

I talked my better half into a shelf in the bookcase on the other wall....so 6000 of my favorites (TRKs, Chickens, and Lakeshores) all went into that bookcase, and I feel those are well protected.

I think I'll at a MINIMUM get some UV film for the bookcase glass, and maybe the window too? It's a huge window.
