Tourney Go for the Gold...? (3 Viewers)

If the money you'd cash out won't change your life at all, and you can face the possibility of losing the potential 1K and still play right in the tourney, play in the tourney. Otherwise, take the cash and buy the family a nice dinner. No shame either way as long as you can play right in the tourney.

If it were me I'd take the money and run. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush or something like that. Heck you can take the 1k and rebuy into one of the 65 dollar tournaments a few different times to give yourself another shot at a ME someday but at least you would have pocketed a big chunk of change.

If you're dead set on doing it then go for it but if you're uncertain I'd take the money and run.

If I bust out of the ME tourney, I'm out $65... Meh. I'm positive my game won't change (or have me playing skared) just because it's a $1,100 entry. If anything, I think knowing I only paid $65 to play could possibly give me a psychological edge over some of the players... I won't be afraid to put those chips to work!

Yes, Ronoh, I really want to play this damn event. I guess I'm realizing that the "smart money" says fold (take the 1k), but I also know the 'experience' has some intrinsic value too.

I'd likely pay a little money to participate in this event, JUST for the experience, and without the chance of a payday (granted, I wouldn't pay anywhere close to 1k just for the "experience", lol).

Every tournament is a gambol, and a balance between skill and luck (you have to have both). I do believe there are players in this event more skilled than I, but I also know I have played with many of them and I can hang. With a little luck, I'll hopefully make a deep run.

We can make arguments that it's a $1,100 gambol, and we can make arguments that it's only a $65 gambol. My brain hasn't come to terms with this entirely... Technically, I'm risking $1,100 on a tournament, but I've actually only spent $65 and a few hours of my time... Considering my family history with a gamboling step-dad (losing the family home), $1,100 is a lot to spend to gambol. But it's only $65 tho...? lol Seriously, I feel like I'm having a conversation/debate in my head. Arguing both sides.

I've always wanted to make runs at this event when it has come to town in the past, but my schedule never worked out to do both the sattys AND the ME. Knowing how easy the sattys are, I think I'll do like a bunch of my buddy's did, and do multiple sattys and earn a bunch of seats to sell off... Next time the event comes to town, I'll be smarter about that.

Reminds me of Mississippi Grind, there's a scene in the movie when he's talking about a guy who gets loaned $60 and runs it up to thousands. He tells the guy to cash out, which he agrees to after one more orbit. He ends up going all in and losing, he talks to the guy to see how he's doing and he says "I only lost $60."

Long story short, take the chance, how many are you going to get for only $65 investment? I still regret not finding a way to attend an ANZPT tournament that I free rolled into.

Would you buy in to this tourney for 1k cash? If the answer is no, then sell your seat. FWIW, there are likely to be a lot of really strong players in this event. That means, unless you're very good, or get VERY lucky, the top payout spots are likely out of reach. Also, keep in mind that if you're playing in an event you're not comfortable in, it's going to affect your play. This is not a good idea.

The fact that you're asking for advice here however, makes me strongly lean toward encouraging you to sell your seat and book the $1k.

Nice job! Well played.

I played in a WSOP Omaha satellite a couple years ago at the Rio and won a $5k seat into the Omaha WSOP event. I ended up selling off $3500 of my lammers and played in a $1500 HORSE event instead. I decided that since I wouldn't want to buy in to the $5k O8 event with cash, why not just play in tourneys I'm more comfortable in, and sell off the ones I'm not. Worked out. I ended up cashing in the HORSE event, and walked away with about 7k total between the Satellite and the event. But even if I lost, I still would have booked $3.5k

Would you buy in to this tourney for 1k cash?

I appreciate the advice.

The answer is, with my current BR, no. However, half my BR was just decimated by the purchase of a big CPC set, paying entirely for two trips to Vegas, and a few downswings in recent cash games. My poker room, chips, table, etc.. is completely funded by my BR.

If my BR was larger, I would absolutely feel comfortable playing (and paying for) this event. As it stands, I try to have a healthy BR management strategy, and regular 1k BI tourneys are not something I could withstand long term right now. I'm just not rolled to survive the variance at that level.

Given that the $1,100 BI represents ~20% of my current BR, I could afford it (but just once), and could still continue playing my weekly $30-50 tourneys and monthly $.25/.50 cash games and occasional $1/2 cash games with complete insulation from variance. But making a jump to a much bigger stake event isn't smart BR mngt IMHO, which is why I entered the $65 satty.

I get this event would be a gambol. Even the most skilled players will need to get a little lucky.

$1k could buy you a plane ticket, hotel room and decent bankroll to run up at a PCF meetup of your choice anywhere in the country. I'd pick that over one donkament with a bunch of hoodie-and-sunglasses-clad "pros" anytime. [emoji3]

Aww damn... When you put it like THAT... Sheesh.

Actually, airfare for me looks expensive just about everywhere..

A couple of my close friends cashed last time around, both for $5k+ and I'd consider myself their poker equals. Buuut, a number of people I know that are more experienced, busted out of the money.. I think a cash is not out of the realm of possibility, but who the hell knows. A 5k cash could get me to 5 meetups... :).

Expand your options... you live two hours from Chicago ;)

I talked with Bill a bit about this in Florida... I am unlucky enough to live 90 minutes from an airport yet lucky enough that I have four of them nearly equidistant from me so I can more or less fly cheap anywhere with enough advance notice :)

Crush another sat? Have two tickets, sell one/play one??? ;)

I guess... time's a ticking tho (the ME is this Friday). I'd have to make a trip to play a satty, then a trip to play a qualifier, then (only then) do I get another ME seat. Maybe next time I'll just plan to hit a bunch of them.

Well, today is the big day. I'll try to provide some updates. Decided to play. In for $65. Let's roll the dice. Win big or bust out, it'll be a great experience regardless.

MSPT Link
Hell yeah! Now no woulda, coulda thoughts. Good Luck!

I played my local Wed night tourney, and it happens that many of the major poker players in the area decided to use this as a primer for the MSPT. I was seated at a table where the avg lifetime tourney win amounts were around 300k... LOL, the two guys on either side of me, Mark Kroon and Tony Nardi were two notable locals. I eventually busted 4 of the players from this table (including Kroon and Nardi). Despite being down to 1700 in chips at one point (starting stacks are 20k), I made the final table as the chip leader with 340k, and only busted shortly after my :ad::qd: hit a :7d::2d::9d: flop. I bet out hard, and the #2 chip stack shoves... Of course I call, and my opponent shows :7h::7c:. The turn pairs the board :2s:, and it's good night for Trihonda as I'm crippled. I made the money (paid 5x my buyin), so I'm happy. And despite losing to a cooler, I am happy with how I played. Great confidence booster moving into the ME.

I can do this!!!!

Busto in like 94th place (out of 200-ish entries). Long story, but in the end, a flopped set of jacks is no good against a gutshot straight draw that gets there on the turn... Had fun, great structure, fun people.

Not a bad time for a $65 investment. I think I ate that much in snacks/sandwiches alone... They had a table full of refreshments set out for the players.

Just got home, I'll post more (along with some pics) later.

Well that is the way it goes. Sounds like you ate like a King and have some good stories. Worth $65 all day and the experience is priceless. I am glad you made a run at it.......Next time!

Next time sell it for a grand :) and re-invest the profit into more poker chips :)

LOL, I knew there would be nay-sayers, ha!

Still no regrets. Had fun!

Not a "nay sayer". Just reinforcing my initial statement when you were making your decision on what to do with the seat.

glad you had a good time. Looking forward to a full report.
