Some great points. I have a hard time taking the ideology seriously when some of the people preaching "chip karma" are the same ones flipping.

Everything becomes clear with time.

I disagree. If the seller is finding something at a neighborhood garage sale and bringing it to the forum then it's something of great value.

If the seller is just fast on the trigger on eBay then I fail to see the value - there is a forum page for posting eBay finds, post there if you have no intention of using the chips. This is the same behaviour as buying as much as you can from a Chiproom sale even though you don't want them just to resell at a higher price.
 
I agree with the general statements in the OP.

Many years ago, I happened upon a Craigslist ad for an amazing deal on Lakeshore Inn quarters and fiddies. I procured said lot. I proceeded to sell the chips to forum members through eBay and PCF at market price.

Was this a flip... sure it was... was it evil... not in the slightest. I turned a nice profit... which in turn ALL went towards future Chiproom purchases and other member sales etc.

From my perspective, I brought a lot of great chips in to the community.

Take my HS Cincy chips for example. I'm motivated to sell because I have to pay for a CPC order I'm going to put in very soon. I paid 2.50/chip from the Chip Exchange per chip once upon a time ago. I've had to lower my selling price (a few times) and take a loss on them because Chip Exchange is lowering the prices on his upcoming sale on the same chip a dollar per chip cheaper than what I paid. Shit happens, but I'm going to close the ad soon and try again later because I tried to sell the chips for two weeks and haven't gotten any interested parties yet.

It sucks that I'm taking a loss on them, but C'est la vie. I'm happy that the market is starting to correct itself with at least some chips.

I think we may be heading towards what happened over at Chiptalk, and we all know there is "NO MORE CHIPTALK" !!

I have been either on Chiptalk or here since nearly the beginning and have heard most everything come up.

My reasoning is: If ya buy something and want to sell it, do so .

No one is making anyone else buy anything.

Yes, sometimes we buy at a great price and sometime we overpay for chips, but it's our choice.

I for one, wouldn't be able to afford this hobby without the occasional flip. A case of crystal parks I found covered the purchase of my Bud Jones set, my 20 year old set of Paulson classics covered my JACK set etc . . .

The vendors don't pretend this is their community.

Some members that call this a community then in turn try to profit as much as they can from so called family. Let's take the most recent sunset beach buy. That venture was purely for profit. If that is what you want to do, fine. But don't pretend that you care about the community in the same breath.

That imo is the difference.

Everyone can do what they want, I’ll just buy or not buy.

But if you’re really asking, the answer is value add. The first approach has a real value. I don’t have the connections, nor the liquid cash on hand to just go buy 20k in poker chips. If I did, I’d be a vendor! I’m paying them a fee for making otherwise unaccessible chips available to us.

In the other context, someone is actively bidding/purchasing against me, in order to resell it to me at a higher price. This person does not add value, in fact they detract it. But again, everyone is totally free to do what they want, for some it’s a community that has a marketplace, for others a marketplace whose buyers are a community.

Edit: That seemed too coherent and pretty objective. Time for another drink.

Maybe the chips have a higher market value and that's why you get bid up? This thread is less about the act of reselling and more about how people don't get the chips they want because they're too expensive.

I think you struggle to understand that it can be both. You don't think Tony and Gear consider this a "community" they care about? Of course they do. The people here are all their customers and some of them are friends.

People take care of their friends. That is how life works. It was the same with the boat buys and the BTP project. People look out for their friends and everyone else can fend for themselves. Just because someone opens a PCF account doesn't make them a friend or "community".

I don't consider all of PCF a community and I sure as hell don't think its family. However, I am friends with some people here. Seems standard to me.

Not really. Your opinion is what it is. This thread is talking about screwing each other over for a few bucks. Yep, everyone has the right to do it. Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should.

Sounds good man. You never know when people are asking an honest question looking for an answer, or if they just want to argue the position they already had.

And I had no idea this was people comparing about how chips were too expensive for them to buy. If that’s someone’s complaint, I’ll laugh em to the moon. (I’m not trying to be a dick, and I’m not super knowledgeable here and you may lurk a ton, but it feels like you’re coming in from left field and may be quite a bit off at least in this one interpretation).
 
I'm a fan of the tv show "American Pickers" so I try to abide by what I'll refer to as the "pickers philosophy." As long as you're buying chips at a fair price, and you're not taking advantage of the seller's ignorance or the circumstances, and you resell those chips at a reasonable price, that's ok. I think most of the profits that the vast majority of members here make is used to cover paypal fees, shipping costs, and then is getting put right back into our PCF economy when they use it to fund their other projects. I'm not offended by that.

I do think that the group buys spurred the changes, real or perceived, that people are concerned about. From what I've ascertained, people "in the know" have said that everything about those buys is on the up and up and there is no deception going on. That leave's a lot of the remaining veteran members here (of which I'm not one) to come to one conclusion: they are being kept out of the secret group buys because they're needed to serve as the resale market. When people see those chips going on sale at crazy high prices right after they're revealed, its not hard to see why they think that they're being excluded from the group buy so that they will buy the chips at a mark-up and fund the project for the GB members. From what I've read on here, that's what I see experienced members most upset about. For a long time everyone thought they were hobbyist on the same team, helping each other realize they're dream sets....and now a small subset of the community is taking a very business like approach. The high price of those chips has also led to other members trying to squeak out every possible dollar when they unload sets to try and afford the newest GB chips.

I personally don't have issues with the flipping and I don't think arguing about it will solve anything. I'm also hesitant to engage in attempts to dictate how other people should enjoy this hobby because everyone has the right to enjoy this hobby however they want. What's next? Are we going to vilify the "chip hoarders" who have dozens of playable sets, some of which are extremely desirable, that are just sitting on a shelf never getting played with? Everyone has a right to spend their money how they want and to do what they want with their chips, just like everyone has a right to get upset when they see actions negatively effecting the community...I just don't think having thread after thread about it solves anything. Let's relax, post some mock-ups, and schedule meetup games.
