Yes I saw this when they posted but you are right. I do spotted birds but will also buy spotted chips as well.

I just got back from Vegas and hit a few poker rooms. Ironically, the Flamingo had the worst and smelliest (stale smoke) room, but they had the cleanest $1 chips of all the rooms.

Here ya go: All the Flamingo 1s on the table looked to be straight out of the box. Nowhere else was anything this clean.

Also note the Ceasar $2. I gather it was there for the rake drop, but they were using them to make change with players. It was even dirtier, but I got one of those just because of the unusualness. I asked them why they are using the $2, and the dealer said the $1s are in short supply. I asked why they are in short supply. I was expecting the reply to be something to the effect of "everyone keeps taking them". But he said they are using them on the craps tables too. I went the week between Christmas and NY, and everywhere was busy. Sounds like they need to order more $1 chips to me.
