Bumping this thread. Wasn’t able to go when Initially planed because of Covid, closed boarders and blah blah blah. Anyways I will be going to Vegas in the new year now! I want to know what casinos to hit up for poker 1/3 NLH and what casinos for blackjack, roulette and other table games. Thanks

Go try Crack Shack at the Park MGM for some good food. They are small chain originally from SoCal that just started expanding. I live a few blocks from one and it is the best chicken sandwich I've ever had by a mile (Get the Firebird with White Cheddar).

I thought Resorts World had a very nice room.

They have a 160 tournament at noon and 7pm.

I didn't get to play at the Wynn, but saw their room and it looked very nice as well.

MGM was a dump. Shitty room and chips. Very seedy feeling to it.

What is the usual wait time for poker games running? During the week quieter than the weekends I assume? Also are there games running 24/7?

there's always a card room running of course. if you're main strip you'll have a lot of options and wait lists are not a big issue except at bellagio IME. it depends on the game you want to play obviously but for smaller games unless it's weekend evenings you shouldn't have to wait long.
where you want to stay depends on your goals and how much you're comfortable spending on a room / how big your group is.

great thing about venetian is that the rooms are massive so you can easily have 4 people in there without feeling cramped so it ends up being pretty inexpensive for groups. and the poker room is pretty good. and the 24 hour restaurant, the grand lux, has a lot of great options that aren't a fortune. it's in a safe part of the strip where you won't have to worry about walking to others that're more central.

on a slightly tighter budget and going solo? want to still be in a safe spot? flamingo is a good choice. bonus: you can harvest flamingo 1s. it generally runs all night long. their tournaments aren't worth playing though.

on a tighter budget and don't feel sketched out by grimy rooms and sketchy people? circus circus is dirt cheap and has some of the most highly coveted 1s for harvesting. and the wynn is not that far away although i wouldn't recommend walking it with cash in hand. the wynn poker room itself is great for low stakes players - really nice room, they have uncapped games (not sure if it always is), they attract a lot of ballers because it's the wynn, and they serve complimentary frozen drinks (this may have changed). for low stakes grinding this is a top choice.

bellagio is overrated for small games because of the wait list. ceasars palace also not a great choice imo even though the card room itself is not bad. it's just really deep in the casino, restaurant options aren't great and all that's near you is the sports book. mirage is ok - the deli next to it is pretty good. any smaller than that isn't worth wasting your time unless you're already at the hotel for something and are looking to kill some time.

Don't sleep on downtown fremont street for a break from poker. My favorite low limit tables are at the D and the Golden Gate (particularly craps). And with Circa open there's some newer rooms in that hotel group.

Headed there after NYE for Mrs. CatDog's Birthday. She picked the Strat because it was the cheapest. (660 all in w/ flights) It appears Resorts World being built shoved a good chunk of the homeless people into the area between downtown and Sands. Have to take the 7 year old as her staying with family is not an option. How sketch is the Strat? The reviews for outside the casino are bad but it appears inside is fine. We don't plan on walking the strip. Plan is to walk to the monorail in the morning and ride to the strip and catch an uber/taxi back to the Strat when we are done for the night.

I hate paying resort fees and $42 a night at the Strat seems steep. We can change our hotel but she made the decision and its her birthday so I don't want to second guess her judgement. I just don't want to be finding another hotel room for the rest of our stay because she won't spend more than the first night there. Is getting a car worth it and just paying the valets at different places worth it? It used to not be but last I was there was 10 years ago.

The Strat is on the “lower end” in terms of strip properties, however it has been improved in recent years. They did a renovation a few years back and the development of Resorts World and other properties on that end of the strip has helped clean up the area a bit simply because there is more foot traffic now. If you’re planning on bouncing around to different properties and not spending much time in the room, there’s probably not much need to change hotels. However it might be worth changing if you want to spend more time at the hotel, lounge a the pool, and be in the room. I wouldn’t mess with the car, you’re better off using taxis or Uber.

Blackjack on the strip has deteriorated markedly the last few years (well, decades, but that’s another story). Not only fewer games, but the scourge of 6-5 payouts has proliferated. A good double-deck game can be found, but the limits are usually high ($50 or $100 minimum bet). Off-strip, the games are better. Orleans and Redrock both had good double-deck games last time I was there. Orleans is still quite good for Poker as well, IMHO.
